22:21   Pak government allows Musharraf to go abroad for treatment
The Pakistan government today allowed ailing Pervez Musharraf to go abroad for medical treatment, a day after the Supreme Court lifted a bar on foreign trips of the former military ruler facing trial in a number of cases including for high treason.

Musharraf, 72, is facing treason trial since 2013 and he was barred from leaving the country in 2014 by the government.

The order was declared as illegal by the Sindh high court in the same year.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court upheld the decision of the Sindh high court, rejecting the appeal of the government.

But it did not stop the federal government from putting new bars on Musharraf's foreign tours.

Interior minister Nisar Ali Khan told a press briefing that after consultation the government decided to let Musharraf leave the country for treatment. He said Musharraf's lawyers had formally asked the government to allow him to undertake foreign travels.

"The government has decided to allow Musharraf to travel abroad for treatment. He has also committed he will face all cases against him in court," Khan said.

19:17   Difficult to accept Congress demand on GST cap: Jaitley
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday said that it would be difficult to accept Congress' demand to cap the goods and services tax rate in a Constitution amendment bill pending in Rajya Sabha even as he remains hopeful of passage of the key bill.

He also said that there is scope to improve growth rate with reforms.

"Today, every state government, including all Congress ones, is in favour of goods and services tax. You have every political party in Parliament which has said they will vote in favour," he said at the India Today Conclave in New Delhi.

"In the Lok Sabha, the Congress walked out, every other party voted in favour. The Congress party has now made a statement that it has only one issue about the Constitutional cap which is a little difficult because our tariff is not decided through Constitution amendment," he said.

The Congress, the original author of the tax reform, has called the Bill pending in Rajya Sabha as "flawed" and wants the government to cap the GST rate at 18 per cent.

The legislation has already been approved by the Lok Sabha but is pending in Upper House, where the ruling the NDA does not have a majority. After it is approved by the Rajya Sabha, the legislation needs to be approved by half of the 29 states so as to roll out GST possibly by October 1.

18:47   Muzaffarnagar to Murthal
When public figures speak violence, the fallout goes beyond their immediate targets. In ways seen and unseen, those most affected are often women.

Recently, we saw an illustration of this during the Jat quota stir. In a sea of men blocking highways and railway tracks, women were invisible. In fact, they were not there at all. Yet, they figured, not as participants but as targets. Although everyone seems to deny that any molestation or rapes occurred at the end of February, there are several reports that suggest that women were attacked and that most of them will not speak out.

Loans defaulter and owner of long-grounded Kingfisher Airlines Vijay Mallya has finally responded to the Enforcement Directorate summons ordering him to appear before it on March 18. Mallya has asked for time till early April.

Mallya has been embroiled in a money laundering case involving Rs 900 crore and is currently in Britain. He left India on March 2, despite a look-out notice on him by the Central Bureau of Investigation for his alleged money laundering of the Rs 900 crore loan he took from IDBI bank.

15:31   Muslims to chant 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' at Mumbai dargah
For the first time in its history, Muslims in their thousands will hoist the Indian tricolour, sing the national anthem and will then chant 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' outside the sanctum sanctorum, but within the premises of the Mahim dargah in Mumbai to celebrate the 603 Urs of Peer Maqdoom Shah Baba.

Sohail Khandwani, president of the Dargah Trust said that the Muslims will do it out of their love for the nation. "Bharat Mata Ki Jai' is a praise in victory of the nation and we will chant it this evening," he added.

Reacting to the controversy that erupted after Asaduddin Owaisi of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and member of Parliament from Hyderabad gave a speech there refusing to chant the slogan under duress from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Khandwani said that it is wrong to force people to chant 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and it should not be used as a test of one's patriotism.

"It is wrong to force somebody to do that but it is not restricted in Islam to praise the victory of a nation," he said. "India is a progresive, secular country," he added.

Khandwani said that Maharashtra's chief minister Devendra Fadnavis will be hoisting the national flag at 5 pm this evening following which the gathered assembly will sing the national anthem, Maqdoom Shah Baba's flag will be hoisted and then Bharat Mata Ki Jai will be chanted.

"I am doing it out of the love for my country but I will not call anybody who refuses to do so as anti-national or unpatriotic. I can't say that this is reaction to what Owaisi has said but it is out of love for my motherland that I will be doing it," Khandwani said.

15:06   'Why don't you say Jai Hind? What's wrong with Jai Hind?
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi took on RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat when he said he would refuse to chant 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' even at 'knife-point.' Addressing RSS leaders at a conclave on March 3, Bhagwat said the new generation needed to be taught to chant slogans hailing mother India, comments which came against the backdrop of the row over alleged anti-India sloganeering on the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus. Owaisi's statements have drawn sharp criticism across political lines, including from poet and lyricist Javed Akhtar who remarked in his farewell address in the Rajya Sabha: Owaisi 'will not say 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' as the Constitution does not require him to say so. But the same Constitution does not ask him to wear the sherwani either.' Owaisi spoke to Syed Firdaus Ashraf/Rediff.com about the controversy. Read

All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi's programme in the Lucknow today was cancelled after he was denied permission by the district administration to hold a meeting on grounds of "law and order situation" in the state.

An angry AIMIM slammed the Samajwadi Party (SP) government's decision to deny permission, saying it was "afraid" of Owaisi as the Uttar Pradesh government had "done nothing" for the minorities.

Owaisi is currently facing fire for refusing to chant 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai', claiming that it is matter of personal choice and no one can be forced to do so.

Owaisi, who had to visit Lucknow today, was denied permission by the district administration to hold a meeting on grounds of "law and order situation" in the state, Additional District Magistrate JS Dubey said in his order. "He is, however, free to visit Lucknow," the order stated.

During his proposed two-day visit to the state, Owaisi was to visit Azamgarh in connection with a programme also but that too has been cancelled.

The Goa government's decision to propose Rs 50 crore for "marketing" tourism in 2016-17 has invited strong criticism from the Opposition benches which dubbed it as a "scam".

"Stakeholders like Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) in their pre-budget memorandum had specifically requested not to promote junkets, and were of the opinion that money should be spent on providing infrastructure," Independent legislator Vijai Sardesai said.

TTAG had objected to junkets as the government was marketing Goa at wrong places and despite that Rs 50 crore is earmarked for the purpose, he said. "Junkets have their own reasons. There are vested interests who want to enjoy at the cost of state exchequer," he said.

14:16   Trump's rise is death knell for Rep establishment: Bobby Jindal
The emergence of real estate tycoon Donald Trump as Republican presidential nominee sounded the death-knell for the party establishment, Indian-American former Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has said.

"The GOP (Republican) establishment is done for. This race shows that," Jindal told MSNBC's "Meet the Press" yesterday. The 44-year-old was one of the 17 Republicans in the race to the White House, but dropped out as he was unable to gain any support.

"Voters are angry and frustrated and, in some part, the Republican Party deserves some of that frustration. Donald Trump should serve as a wake-up call," Jindal said.

A brokered convention to prevent Trump from becoming the presidential nominee would only further discredit party leadership, said Jindal, who has been one of the billionaire's most vocal critics. "When huge chunks of your base are telling you something, you have to listen to them. Let's let the voters speak," he said and opposed the idea of a 'brokered convention."

14:12   Week to go, Holi fever starts building up in Vrindavan
It is still a week a to go for Holi but festivities have already begun in Brijbhumi Vrindavan.

Devotees enjoyed the festival of colours at the famous Dwarkadhish temple yesterday and many more such events will unfold in the run-up to Holi.

Imparting a touch of pathos to the celebrations would be an attempt to add a dash of colours to the otherwise insipid lives of the Vrindavan widows who live the life of a recluse, having been deserted by their families.

In an effort to help the social assimilation, the social service organisation- Sulabh International has been organising Holi celebrations for them for the last couple of years.

"One thousand widows in the sacred town of Vrindavan would play Holi on March 21. It would be a break from the tradition that normally forbids a widow from wearing coloured clothes or playing with colours during Holi", Sulabh's founder Bindeshwar Pathak said.

The agency had registered a case in this regard in December last year on charges that the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, also known as Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or just IS, has been "engaged in radicalisation of Indian youths and motivating them to join the terrorist organisation as a result of which some Indian nationals have already joined it or are in the process of joining it for committing terrorist acts in the conflict zone of Iraq, Syria and Libya."

The NIA has earlier arrested 14 youths in the case after a nationwide crackdown.

13:39   Condition of police horse Shaktiman deteriorates
The condition of the injured police horse 'Shaktimaan' deteriorates, says Sadanand Date, SSP Dehradun.

The police horse that was allegedly attacked by a BJP MLA, causing a nation-wide outrage, underwent a surgical procedure to fix one of its hind legs after which authorities said no amputation was required.

The alleged attack on the horse took place during a protest on Monday after which the Congress and BJP were locked in a verbal clash in the Uttarakhand assembly even as people poured their wrath on Mussoorie MLA Ganesh Joshi for showing cruelty to the animal.

Police have registered a case against Joshi and his supporters under Cruelty to Animals Act in connection with the incident, while several animal rights activists including Puja Bahukhandi have also lodged a police complaint against the MLA for his "inhuman" act.

Shaktiman,13, was operated upon by a team of doctors from PantnagarVeterinaryCollege after which Senior Superintendent of Police Sadanand Date said, "The injury has been fixed and no amputation was required."

The attack on the horse of Uttarakhand Mounted Police occurred near Rispana bridge during a protest march by BJP to the state assembly. When intercepted near the bridge, BJP workers tried to jump over the barricades prompting security personnel, including the mounted police, to swing into action to control the protesters.

Joshi (pictured in beige kurta) visited the injured animal in Dehradun today and said that the horse needs better treatment and must be send to the national capital in that regard.

12:55   Modi on TIME's 'most influential on Internet' list for second year
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is among the most influential people on the Internet, TIME magazine said, describing the Indian leader as an "Internet star" who often uses social media to "conduct diplomacy."

The magazine cited Modi's unconventional announcement on Twitter of his visit to Pakistan last year while naming him among 'The 30 Most Influential People on the Internet' for the second year in a row in this year's unranked list.

The list includes U.S. Presidential hopeful Donald Trump, reality TV star Kim Kardashian and her husband Kayne West, author J.K. Rowling, former Olympic athlete Caitlyn Jenner and soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo.

On Trump, the magazine noted that he is "redefining how political candidates use social media, for better and for worse."

Despite facing flak for his often insulting tweets and comments online, Trump has almost 7 million followers on Twitter, more than any other presidential candidate including Hillary Clinton, it said.

For its second annual roundup of the most influential people on the Internet, TIME said it looked at the contenders' global impact on social media and their overall ability to drive news.

On Modi, TIME said the leader of the world's largest democracy is also an "Internet star", boasting more than 18 million Twitter followers and over 32 million Facebook likes.

It also cited Modi's use of social media to break news and conduct diplomacy.

"And unlike some of his contemporaries, he often uses social media to break news and conduct diplomacy. On Christmas Day, for example, Modi tweeted that he would visit the Pakistani city of Lahore to wish Nawaz Sharif, the leader of India's chief regional rival, a happy 66th birthday," it said.

Well, also mentions his blooper

TIME, however, also cited the faux pas Modi made when he took to Twitter last month to convey his birthday wish to Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani, who politely corrected him that his birthday was in May.

"That tweet made headlines for the wrong reasons, though: the Afghan President replied with his thanks, and a polite note that he was actually born on May 19," the magazine said.

Last year, Modi was named by TIME among the 100 most influential people in the world in its annual list, with U.S. President Barack Obama penning a flattering profile of him.

This year's list also includes Indo-Canadian vlogger Lilly Singh, who TIME has said is rapidly becoming one of the biggest stars on YouTube, both on and off-screen.

12:33   The rise and rise of Donald Trump
One of the consequences of the rise of Donald Trump is the global equalization of awfulness. Time was when desis would lament the loneliness of the long-distance liberal in India and gesture, by way of contrast, at the West where liberal virtues were institutionalized and where political differences were civilly expressed. If this was ever true, it isn't true any more.

Lenders to long-grounded Kingfisher Airlines, owned by beleaguered businessman Vijay Mallya, today began auctioning the KFA headquarters - Kingfisher House - situated near the domestic airport here.

The property, with a built-up area of over 17,000 sq ft in Vile Parle area, is being auctioned by SBICAPS Trustee, a subsidiary of SBI Caps through an e-auction.

The auction is being conducted on e-auction property platform, AuctionTiger. The base price for the property has been set at Rs 150 crore.

The auction is being conducted under the Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest Act (Sarfaesi), 2002.

The property was taken over in February 2015 by a consortium of 17 banks lead by State Bank of India in a bid to recover Rs 9,000 crore loan given to the airlines.

Burdened under huge losses and liabilities, including to the lenders, the airline was grounded in late 2012. While lenders have stepped up their efforts to recover dues totalling over Rs 9,000 crore, the founder and main promoter Mallya left the country earlier this month.

Recently, the Enforcement Directorate registered a money laundering case against Mallya and others based on a CBI FIR registered last year.

The agency is also investigating the overall financial structure of Kingfisher Airlines and will look into any payment of kickbacks. Kingfisher Airlines faces a probe by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) into its allegedly 'inflated' brand valuation of over Rs 4,000 crore.

The government's white-collar fraud detection agency is probing whether such a high valuation was arrived at fraudulently to get more funds from banks and siphon off the additional money for purposes other than proposed investment in the airline.

09:10   Jat deadline on quota ends today, security tightened in Haryana
The Jat reservation protests, which plunged Haryana into a welter of violence leaving 30 dead, could erupt again today if the Haryana government fails to meet its demands in the draft Bill it is likely to table in the state assembly.

The influential Jat community leaders are demanding 10 per cent quotas, besides withdrawal of FIRs registered against the protesters, compensation to those killed during the stir and action against BJP MP from Kurukshetra Raj Kumar Saini for his anti-Jat reservation stand.

The state government has sought paramilitary forces from the Centre to be deployed in sensitive areas. Security has been stepped up in Rohtak and Jhajjar towns, the epicentre of the protests.

Haryana police was criticised for its "failure" to prevent and control violence during the Jat agitation last month, in which 30 people lost their life.

The then IGP Rohtak Shrikant Jadhav was suspended by Haryana government.

Last month, as the Jat quota agitation spread fast, engulfing town after town in Haryana, with protesters burning railway stations, schools, hospitals and shops, Khattar government buckled under pressure and announced that a bill for giving OBC status to Jats will be brought in the coming assembly session and a high-powered committee will be set up to examine the quota demand for the community in central jobs.

The BJP has accused Congress leader and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda of fanning the agitation. Hooda's former political adviser Virender has been booked under several charges, including sedition, in connection with the violence.

08:59   Vadra land case: Probe panel summons ex-CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda
The Justice SN Dhingra Commission of Inquiry, set up in 2015 to probe grant of commercial licence of land to hundreds of private companies, including Skylight Hospitality and DLF, has issued summons to former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda for joining the investigation.

The commission has asked Hooda to appear before it within March 23 and record his statements regarding allotment of land to Skylight Hospitality, promoted by Congress president Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra and other private companies.

Last month, the Commission had summoned Haryana chief secretary Deepinder Singh Dhesi and officials of the private firms for recording of statement.

The commission has earlier examined retired IAS officer and member of Union Public Service Commission Chattar Singh, who was the principal secretary in Hooda's CMO.

Singh handled files of the town and country planning department in the chief minister's office.

After being set up by the BJP government in May 2015, the scope of the commission's inquiry was widened on Justice Dhingra's advice.

08:52   Banks to auction Mallya's Kingfisher House today; valued at Rs 150 crore
A consortium led by the State Bank of India is likely to auction the Kingfisher House at Jogeshwari in Mumbai on Thursday, in a bid to recover part of the Rs 6,963 crore debt due from the now grounded Kingfisher Airlines.

The bank consortium had taken over the Kingfisher House near Mumbai airport, belonging to liquor baron Vijay Mallya, in February 2015 after winning a case in a sessions court. The house, which served as Kingfisher headquarters, would be sold through e-auction. It has been valued at Rs 150 crore.

The consortium has also taken over the Kingfisher Villa in Goa, worth around Rs 90 crore.

On Wednesday, the Central Bureau of Investigation was reportedly preparing official letters to some foreign jurisdictions to find out details of overseas properties owned by Mallya, who left the country on March 2.

As part of its ongoing probe into the Rs 900 crore IDBI Bank loan default case, the CBI is planning to approach Britain, Mauritius, Cayman Islands and France, among others, to get details and "documented evidence" about the properties owned by Mallya.

08:49   Excise duty: Jewellers sharpen pitch, to hold rally in Delhi today
Jewellers will today hold a rally at Ram Lila Maidan in national capital New Delhi to protest against the Budget proposal to impose 1 per cent excise duty on non-silver jewellery.

Jewellers are on strike since March 2 demanding withdrawal of the proposed excise duty. The strike entered the 16th day today, with gold and jewellery establishments remaining closed across the country.

The All-India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation had Tuesday said their pan-India strike will continue till the proposed 1 per cent excise duty on non-silver jewellery is withdrawn.

"As the Union Finance Minister fails to address the grievances of the gems and jewellery sector, the jewellers are gearing up for a mega rally on Thursday, March 17, at Ramlila Maidan, New Delhi," GJF said in a statement on Wednesday.

The details of actual difficulties faced by the sector have not been acknowledged by the government, it said.

The gems and jewellery sector has been bleeding following the bandh which has caused a loss of almost Rs 20,000 crore to the industry, the association said.

Replying to a debate in the Lok Sabha on the general Budget, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had rejected demand for rolling back the levy, saying the move is in preparation for unveiling of the goods and services tax.

A sessions court in Delhi is likely to hear the bail plea of former Delhi University lecturer SAR Gilani who was arrested under sedition charges in connection with a Press Club event.

The accused, arrested on February 16, had filed his bail applications before the Patiala House Courts registry on Wednesday.

Police had earlier told the court that an event was held on February 10 in which banners were placed showing Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat as martyrs.

It had also said the hall in the club was booked by Gilani through one Ali Javed by using his credit card and another person Mudassar was also involved.

At the Press Club event, a group had allegedly shouted slogans hailing Guru, following which the police had lodged a case under sections 124A (sedition), 120B(criminal conspiracy) and 149 (unlawful assembly) of the IPC against Gilani and other unnamed persons.
