German bakery bomb blast case convict Himayat Baig awarded life sentence in one case, acquitted of nine charges.

The Bombay high court delivered its verdict this afternoon overturning the death penalty awarded to Himayat Baig, the lone convict of the 2010 Pune German Bakery blast case.

A division bench of Justices N H Patil and S B Shukre pronounced the verdict on the confirmation petition of the Maharashtra government and the appeal filed by Baig challenging his conviction and the death sentence.

Baig was produced before the high court when it pronounced the verdict.

Baig, who the police said was a member of the terrorist outfit Indian Mujahideen, was arrested in September 2010 for involvement in the blast at German Bakery, a popular eatery in Pune's Koregaon Park area, which killed 17 persons and injured 58 including some foreign nationals.

In 2013, the sessions court in Pune convicted him and awarded him the capital punishment.
