23:55   Islamic State chief for Afghanistan & Pakistan killed by US drone: Report
The leader of Islamic State's branch in Afghanistan and Pakistan has been killed in a United States drone strike in an eastern Afghan province, Reuters has reported quoting the Afghan ambassador to Pakistan.

"I can confirm that ISIS Khurasan leader Hafiz Saeed Khan along with his senior commanders and fighters died in a US drone strike on July 26 in Kot district of Afghanistan's Nangharhar province," Afghan Ambassador Omar Zakhilwal told Reuters.

A spokesman for the US military coalition in Kabul said he could not confirm the reports but officials were investigating.

22:56   Scientists to unveil new Earth-like planet: report
Scientists are preparing to unveil a new planet in our galactic neighbourhood which is "believed to be Earth-like" and orbits its star at a distance that could favour life, German weekly Der Spiegel reported on Friday.
The exoplanet orbits a well-investigated star called Proxima Centauri, part of the Alpha Centauri star system, the magazine said, quoting anonymous sources.
"The still nameless planet is believed to be Earth-like and orbits at a distance to Proxima Centauri that could allow it to have liquid water on its surface, an important requirement for the emergence of life," said the magazine.
"Never before have scientists discovered a second Earth that is so close by," it said, adding that the European Southern Observatory will announce the finding at the end of August.
The report gave no further details.
NASA has announced the discovery of new planets in the past, but most of those worlds were either too hot or too cold to host water in liquid form, or were made of gas, like our Jupiter and Neptune, rather than of rock, like Earth or Mars.
Last year, the US space agency unveiled an exoplanet that it described as Earth's "closest-twin".
Named Kepler 452b, the planet is about 60 percent larger than Earth and could have active volcanoes, oceans, sunshine like ours, twice as much gravity and a year that lasts 385 days.
But at a distance of 1,400 light-years away, humankind has little hope of reaching this Earth-twin any time soon.
In comparison, the exoplanet orbiting Proxima Centauri, if confirmed, is just 4.24 light-years away.
This is a mere stepping stone in relation to the scale of the Universe but still too far away for humans to reach in present-generation chemical rockets.
According to NASA's Godard Space Center's website, it lies 39,900,000,000,000 kilometres away, or 271,000 times the distance of Earth to the Sun.
Proxima Centauri, discovered in 1915, is one of three stars in the Alpha Centauri system, a constellation mainly visible from the southern hemisphere.

20:36   Have got no complaint against Vijay Goel: Sports Ministry
In a damage control exercise, the Sports Ministry today claimed that the alleged case of aggressive behaviour by one of its unaccredited officials in the Rio Olympic Games was a case of misunderstanding but it has still instructed him to strictly follow the rules set by the Organising Committee.

The Indian contingent in Rio has been left embarrassed after the Organising Committees Continental Manager Sarah Paterson threatened to cancel the accreditation of Sports Minister Vijay Goel for the aggressive and rude behaviour of his entourage in a letter to Chef-de-Mission Rakesh Gupta.

14:59   SC allows diesel SUVs for Delhi, but with a new tax
Large diesel cars, mainly SUVs, can remain on Delhi's roads, the Supreme Court has said, but owners will have to pay a green fine to compensate for polluting the city's air.

Last year, the Supreme Court had temporarily banned the sale of large diesel cars in New Delhi, triggering strong appeals from manufacturers.

The Supreme Court today allowed registration of diesel vehicles of 2000 CC and above in Delhi-NCR on deposit of one per cent of ex-showroom price as green cess. One per cent green cess to be deposited before the Central Pollution Control Board which will open a separate account in a PSU bank, says SC.

The SC also keeps open for adjudication the Centre's opposition that such charge cannot be levied by the court. The court says it will decide later whether green cess can be levied on diesel vehicles of below 2000cc engine capacity.

14:49   India must hold its nerve in Kashmir
There is a rising tide led by the chatterati/twitterati, the so-called liberal opinion, as well as some political pressure, on the government to do 'something' in the wake of violence in the urban areas of Srinagar.

There is a great danger of the Indian government getting stampeded into actions that could result in long lasting damage.

At a smaller level, what one is currently witnessing in the Kashmir valley is a re-run of Mohammed Ali Jinnah's 'direct action' ploy in August 1947.

14:01   Politicians must face up to the present realities in Kashmir
Those familiar with the Indian experiences with insurgencies may have noticed the recurrence of some catchphrases and keywords. The need to "win the hearts and minds" of the local population, the importance of assuaging the hurt "psyche" and, subsequently, to apply the "healing touch" are familiar features of political and well-meaning interventions. We saw this during the decade-long Punjab troubles in the aftermath of Operation Blue Star, the assassination of Indira Gandhi and the anti-Sikh riots. In the case of the Kashmir Valley that erupted after the kidnapping of Rubaiya Sayeed in 1989 and the ethnic cleansing of Kashmiri Pandits, the platitudes were combined with pleas for even greater regional autonomy and the reversion to the state's pre-1953 status.

13:45   2 AI, Jet pilots caught drunk after flight suspended for four years
Two pilots of Air India and Jet Airways have been suspended for four years by DGCA after they were found drunk on arrival of their overseas flights. The aviation ministry directs that an FIR be filed against the suspended pilots. Jet Airways says it has terminated services of the cockpit crew member who tested positive during a breath analyser test conducted on Aug 3.

Both the pilots had tested positive for alcohol earlier too, but always before a flight.

Jet Airways said in a statement that the airline has "zero tolerance" towards any action of its crew that violates safety rules and service conditions.

"In case of non-compliance, we take disciplinary action after due investigation as per company policy," said the airline. Jet Airways also said while other countries have random alcohol testing policy, the regulations of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation in India call for 100 per cent screening for the crew before every flight.

13:26   All-party meeting on Kashmir begins on last-day of Monsoon Session
All-party meeting on Kashmir chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun inside the Parliament House.

The opposition wants the government to detail a political road map to resolve the crisis in Kashmir. The meeting has been called to find a solution to the cycle of violence in Kashmir, where at least 60 people have died and thousands injured following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani on July 8.

Before both houses were adjourned ahead the all-party meeting, the Lok Sabha  passed a resolution to "restore the confidence of the people and youth of Kashmir".

Friday being the last day of the monsoon session of Parliament, most of the political parties are of the opinion that the government should start a dialogue process with the people of Kashmir Valley and send an all-party delegation to hold talks with people of the state.

"Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had shown us the way, and we will follow his footsteps. Insaniyat (Humanity), Kashmiriyat (Kashmiri values) and Jamooriyat (democracy) are the way forward. Freedom experienced by every Indian is also for every Kashmiri. Peace, unity and social harmony are the way forward; I urge the youth of Kashmir to take part in this process," Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said at a public meeting in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday.

NDA leaders have assured both the houses of Parliament that the government will speak to chief minister Mehbooba Mufti and prepare a ground for an all-party delegation to Jammu and Kashmir.

11:46   Tired of everyday train delays angry Mumbai commuters stage rail roko
A technical glitch in a signal at Bhivpuri led to delay in the running of local trains in Mumbai on Friday. Angry commuters protested at the Badlapur station after long delays were reported.

Tired of the local trains on Central Railway running behind its time every single day, angry commuters staged protest on Friday at the Badlapur station in Mumbai.

A huge mob of commuters gathered at the station and protested against the railway officials and stopped approaching trains by protesting on the train tracks.

Earlier, Indian Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu tweeted, "GM DRM, officers directed early morning to help passengers in #Badlapur, sort out their problems. Requesting all not to agitate, all steps taken."The delay had occurred after a signal failure at Bhivpuri station which meant there was no train running for more than half an hour during the peak hours. @Central_Railway then tweeted saying, "Services on the Karjat-Ambernath route restored from 10.55 hrs."

11:17   Sports minister Vijay Goel rubbishes reports to misbheaviour against him
India's sports minister Vijay Goel today defended the allegations of misbehaviour levelled against his entourage by the Organising Committee stating that nothing of that sort has happened.

Yesterday, Sarah Peterson, who is Continental Manager for Rio 2016 Organising Committee, in a letter to Indian Chef-de-Mission Rakesh Gupta threatened to cancel Goel's accreditation on grounds of misbehaviour and trying to enter venues with his entourage who don't have valid passes.

"I don't know who wrote the letter and what are his capacities and post. The letter written to Chef-de-Mission (Rakesh Gupta) states that they have some issue from our staff members, regarding misbehavior or access. I don't know any such things and they have not written against me, the letter also does not have anything against the sports minister," Goel said in his defence.

When asked about trying to forcibly enter the hockey arena, Goel said:"The volunteers had taken him to the field of play because otherwise how is he allowed to go? I couldn't have gone on my own. Next time, I had an upgraded pass with me provided by Organising Committee (OC).

"I went to the hockey pitch to cheer up our team only, and it is not a crime. We are here to cheer up our teams only. first they asked to have a pass, so the next time i went there with my pass." Goel said that he expected certain things to be communicated verbally before taking the matter straightaway to the Chef-de-Mission.

"They should have told things orally, we are not informed anything and they wrote straight away to Chef-de-Mission. Language is also a main problem here, may be there is a misunderstanding because of that.

"There is nothing against the Sports Minister and if it is because of staff, then I don't have any knowledge about it. If they bring things to me than only i can do anything," he said.

11:09   Kashmir unrest: Police ask imams to avoid provocative speeches after Friday prayers
With separatists calling for protests across Kashmir on Friday, Jammu and Kashmir Police have asked the imams of mosques not to deliver "provocative" speeches."

He said it has been observed for past one month that people were being forced to assemble after Friday prayers on the roads.

"Many a times these gatherings are manipulated to throw stones upon the police and security force deployments. In order to avoid such situations the parents are requested not to allow their children to take part in such activities. Youth are advised not to fall prey to such machinations," the spokesman said.

10:46   India look forward to athletes, boxer Vikas on Day 7
After drawing a blank over the first six days vis--vis opening the coveted medal chest, India would be keenly watching action on day seven at the Rio Olympics today with Blue Riband athletics events making its bow.

It was a largely disappointing sixth day yesterday in which shuttlers Saina Nehwal, P V Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth shone even as the men's hockey team lost in the league and yet made it to the quarter finals after 36 years.

There were setbacks in women's archery where Deepika Kumari and L Bombayla Devi bowed out at the pre quarter final stage leaving male archer Atanu Das as the lone person standing to make amends today when he takes on formidable South Korean rival S Lee for a place in the last eight in the individual elimination phase.

10:40   I don't feel extra pressure to win an Olympic medal: Sania
Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza feels that there is "enough pressure" on them as elite athletes to even think of aspects like why India is yet to win an Olympic medal till the sixth day of the competitions.

"I don't feel any extra pressure. I just feel as responsible every time I step on the court, whether at the Olympics or Grand Slam. It's very tough. If you have to win the tournament you have to win everybody. You have to hope for the best," Sania said after she and Bopanna won their pre quarter-final match against Australians Sam Stosur and John Peers.

Asked whether the pressure of winning a medal with Indian contingent's dismal show till now will have an effect, the multiple Grand Slam champion replied:"People follow (Olympics) it every single day and morning. As athletes, we have dealt enough pressure, point after point. We can't think about other aspects what happened outside. Hopefully it's going to happen and we are going to win the medal or somebody else," the world No 1 in WTA doubles ranking said.

It's her third Olympics and a medal which has eluded her in the two earlier editions means a world to her. "Personally for me, it would be amazing to win a medal at the Olympics which I don't have. It would mean the world us. We would do whatever we can and put our best forward," Sania said. The Indians are set to meet British pair of Andy Murray and Heather Watson.

"We have had multiple reports of your Minister for Sports trying to enter accredited areas at venues with unaccredited individuals. When the staff try to explain that this is not allowed, they report that the people with the Minister have become aggressive and rude and sometimes push past our staff," Sarah Peterson, the Continental Manager for the Rio 2016 Organising Committee, said in a letter to India's Chef-de-Mission, Rakesh Gupta. 08:06   Muslim woman sues Chicago, 6 officers for false terrorist ID
A Muslim woman is suing the city of Chicago and six officers who falsely singled her out as a potential terrorist on July 4, 2015, as she left a subway station wearing a headscarf, face veil and carrying a backpack.

Itemid Al-Matar's federal lawsuit filed today says officers pulled off her religious garb, arrested her and later strip-searched her. The 32-year-old was acquitted of obstructing justice.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations says "blatant xenophobia, Islamophobia and racial profiling" motivated the arrest.

A public police report says officers "were on high alert of terrorist activity" on the national holiday and that Al-Matar was exhibiting "suspicious behavior."

08:02   Shah Rukh Khan detained at Los Angeles airport
Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan was detained at Los Angeles airport by the immigration department on Friday.

Venting his frustration at being repeatedly stopped at US airports, the actor wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter: "I fully understand & respect security with the way the world is, but to be detained at US immigration every damn time really really sucks."

The actor, however, seemed to keep his calm tweeting: "The brighter side is while waiting caught some really nice Pokemons."

This is not the first time that the actor has been detained at a US airport.

In 2012, he was detained at the New York airport for over two hours by immigration officials. The US customs and border protection authorities had expressed "profound" apologies for his detention then.

In 2009, Khan was also detained by immigration officials at the Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey because his name came up on an alert list.

03:54   US government won't reclassify marijuana, allows research
The Obama administration has decided marijuana will remain on the list of most-dangerous drugs, fully rebuffing growing support across the country for broad legalisation, but said it will allow more research into its medical uses.
The decision to expand research into marijuana's medical potential could pave the way for the drug to be moved to a lesser category.
Heroin, peyote and marijuana, among others, are considered Schedule I drugs because they have no medical application; cocaine and opiates, for example, have medical uses and, while still illegal for recreational use, are designated Schedule II drugs.
The Drug Enforcement Administration said the agency's decision came after a lengthy review and consultation with the Health and Human Services Department, which said marijuana "has a high potential for abuse" and "no accepted medical use."
The decision means that pot will remain illegal for any purpose under federal law, despite laws in 25 states and District of Columbia that have legalized pot for either medicinal or recreational use.
Advocates have long pushed for the federal government to follow suit.
"If the scientific understanding about marijuana changes and it could change then the decision could change," DEA acting administrator Chuck Rosenberg wrote in a letter to the governors of Rhode Island and Washington, who sought the review of marijuana's classification in 2011.
"But we will remain tethered to science, as we must, and as the statute demands. It certainly would be odd to rely on science when it suits us and ignore it otherwise."

03:33   Kennedys join Reagan, King relatives in scolding Trump
Members of the Kennedy family sternly rebuked Donald Trump on Thursday for joking about "the possibility of political assassination," joining the relatives of other slain or wounded US leaders in condemning recent
rhetoric by the Republican presidential nominee.
Trump alarmed many in the political world and beyond on Tuesday when he suggested that "Second Amendment people" -- those who support gun rights -- could act against his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton or the justices she would appoint to the US Supreme Court if she were president.
It was beyond the pale for the Kennedys, who wrote in a Washington Post op-ed that Trump's "dark and offensive rhetoric" should disqualify him from the presidency.
"Political violence is the greatest of all civic sins," wrote William Kennedy Smith and Jean Kennedy Smith, nephew and sister of Democratic president John F Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963, and senator Robert Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968 as he campaigned for president.

"Today, almost 50 years later, words still matter," the Kennedys wrote.
"So it was with a real sense of sadness and revulsion that we listened to (Trump) as he referred to the options available to 'Second Amendment people,' a remark widely, and we believe correctly, interpreted as a thinly veiled  reference or 'joke' about the possibility of political assassination."

02:54   Mississippi woman gets 12-year sentence on terrorism charge
A Mississippi woman, who once sought to disguise a planned journey to join the Islamic State group as her honeymoon, was sentenced on Thursday by a federal judge to 12 years in prison on a terrorism charge.
Vicksburg native Jaelyn Young broke down in heavy sobs during her sentencing by US District Judge Sharion Aycock.

Young pleaded guilty in March to one count of conspiring to provide material support to a terrorist organisation.
Young had faced up to 20 years in prison. Her parents pleaded for leniency at the hearing. Young, amid sobs, said she was ashamed of her actions.
Her fiance, Muhammad Dakhlalla, pleaded guilty March 11 to a similar charge and is set to be sentenced August 24.
Prosecutors have said Young, who converted to Islam while studying at Mississippi State University, had prodded Dakhlalla into the plan.
The two were arrested in 2015 before boarding a flight from Columbus, Mississippi, with tickets for Istanbul, Turkey.
"I found the contacts, made arrangements, planned the departure," Young had written in a farewell letter to her family. "I am guilty of what you soon will find out."
Young and Dakhlalla were among a number of people arrested around the country for Islamic State sympathies. Like many, authorities said, they had developed views supporting the Islamic State in part by watching online videos and were arrested after social media posts attracted the attention of the FBI.
The daughter of a school administrator and a police officer who served in the Navy reserve, Young is a former honor student, cheerleader and homecoming maid at Vicksburg's Warren Central High School.

02:52   I care more about Palestinians than their leaders: Israeli PM
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday said he cares more about the Palestinian people than their leaders do, in his first response to allegations of aid theft by Hamas.
"I, the prime minister of Israel, care more about Palestinians than their own leaders do," Netanyahu said in a video posted online, which provoked outrage from the Palestinians.
"Israel cares more about Palestinians than their own leaders do," he added.
The Israeli leader said his comments were in response to allegations that the militant Islamic Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, stole aid from a major charity and the United Nations.
An Israeli court on August 4 charged World Vision's Gaza head Mohammed al-Halabi with funding "terror," while a UN engineer was indicted Tuesday on allegations of working with Hamas's military wing.
"Hamas, the terrorist organisation that runs Gaza, stole millions of dollars from humanitarian organisations like World Vision and the United Nations," said Netanyahu.
"Innocent and impoverished Palestinians were denied vital aid supplied from nations around the world," he added.
Saeb Erekat, secretary general of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, said "the hate that Netanyahu has against the Palestinian people makes him invent a parallel history."

02:37   Canada IS sympathizer shot dead after setting off explosive
A Canadian man who had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group in a video was shot dead in a taxi after setting off an explosive device, police said on Thursday.
Aaron Driver, 24, was killed on Wednesday after a tip to Canadian authorities from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, who had intercepted the video, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police told a press conference.
RCMP Deputy Commissioner Mike Cabana said that on Wednesday they had received information from the FBI, including "a martyr video that had been prepared by an individual who at that time was unknown to us but who was clearly in the final stages of preparing an attack using homemade bombs."

Based on the information received, police believed an attack was possible "within the following 72 hours" in an "urban center," Cabana said.
Police and counterterrorism experts quickly identified the man in the video as Driver.
Meanwhile, Toronto's transit system was alerted about a "credible terrorist threat," and security was beefed up along its network of subways, bus lines and street cars used by 1.8 million people a day.
The RCMP said they intercepted Driver in Strathroy, Ontario, about 220 kilometers southwest of Toronto, outside the home where he lived with his sister, at about 4:30 pm local time on Wednesday.
He had just gotten into the back seat of a taxi that had just arrived.
When police approached, Driver detonated an explosive device in the back seat of the cab, causing minor injuries to the driver, before he was shot dead by officers, authorities said.

01:00   US military 'manipulated' intel in IS fight
United States military leaders painted an overly optimistic picture of American efforts to fight the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, a damning government report released found.
The interim report stems from a congressional task force investigating whistleblower allegations that intel bosses cherry-picked information that soft-pedaled the risk of IS while overstating US efforts to train local forces to fight the jihadists.
"From the middle of 2014 to the middle of 2015, the United States Central Command's (CENTCOM's) most senior intelligence leaders manipulated the command's intelligence products to downplay the threat from ISIS in Iraq," Republican Congressman Mike Pompeo said in a statement, using an IS acronym.
"The result: consumers of those intelligence products were provided a consistently 'rosy' view of US operational success against ISIS," he added, noting this "may well" have put US troops at risk.
Task force investigators surveyed dozens of CENTCOM analysts, with many viewing the leadership environment at the time as toxic.
"Forty percent of analysts respond(ed) that they had experienced an attempt to distort or suppress intelligence in the past year," the report states.
Additionally, CENTCOM disseminated press releases and gave public statements that were "significantly more positive" than reality, investigators found.
Further, senior CENTCOM leaders "violated regulations, tradecraft standards, and professional ethics" by modifying intelligence to present overly positive assessments of initial US efforts to train Iraqi security forces to fight IS.

The Pentagon's inspector general is currently running an internal investigation into the matter so officials could not comment directly on today's report.
"The intelligence community routinely provides a wide range of assessments based on multifaceted data related to the current security environment," Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Commander Patrick Evans said.
"These assessments and the expert analysts who develop them are absolutely vital to our efforts, particularly given  the incredibly complex nature of the multi-front fights that are ongoing now in Iraq and Syria.

00:37   We are far, far away from smart cities: Narayana Murthy
Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy on Thursday said the country was "far, far away" from realising the ambition of developing smart cities, a flagship programme of the Narendra Modi government.
"Since we are far, far away from smart cities, I did not talk about it," Murthy said, when asked why he did not mention the smart city project during his one-hour lecture on 'City Systems' in Mumbai.

"I am a doer, I am not just a talker," he said and asked the audience to visit Infosys's campus in Mysore to have a taste of what a smart city can be.

Earlier in the lecture, organised by JSW Literature Live, Murthy also came down heavily on the lack of infrastructure in cities.
"Poor infrastructure can drive away investments and talent," he said, and pointed out how Mumbai has suffered due to this continued neglect.

"Ten or 12 years ago, the desire was to position Mumbai as the Asian financial centre. We are nowhere near that dream for the very simple reason that investments are not coming in, talents are not simply available, productivity has gone down and growth has slowed down.

"We are still placing bandaids when there is a deeper cancer to be cured," he said.

The government should not compare our cities with those in the developed world, but should look at the emerging market peers like Brazil, Indonesia and Malaysia which are taking great efforts to make cities better, Murthy said.

00:22   Clashes in Syria's Aleppo as Russia opens aid 'windows'
Fresh fighting hit Syria's Aleppo on Thursday, the first day of a promised Russian aid window the UN said was insufficient to bring relief for the city's desperate residents.
Even as Moscow pledged to pause strikes around the divided second city, it carried out raids further east on the Islamic State group bastion of Raqa that a monitor said killed 24 civilians.
Russia was meanwhile offered the possibility of joint operations against IS by Turkey, which has backed rebel groups against President Bashar al-Assad.

The offer came one day after crucial talks between President Vladimir Putin and Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan aimed at ending a crisis in ties.
A longtime ally of Damascus, Russia has provided air cover for pro-government forces for nearly a year, including in the escalating battle for Aleppo.
The city has been rocked by a recent surge in violence, with residents on both sides of the front line living in fear of being trapped by renewed hostilities.
The United Nations said Russia was considering expanding three-hour pauses in fighting every morning to bring in desperately-needed aid.
