A Karnataka BJP leader stirred a row when he publicly threatened to behead Chief Minister Siddaramaiah if he dared to consume cow meat after which he was today arrested for his "provocative" and "intimidatory" remarks.

S N Channabasappa, a former president of the erstwhile Shivamogga City Municipal Council, had held out the threat last evening during a protest organised by the local party unit against Siddaramaiah's reported comment on eating beef made last week.

"How dare you lay your hands on the neck of Gomata? You are openly saying with a dictatorial attitude that you will eat cow meat... If you have the guts, you come here and eat at Gopi Circle (in Shivamogga), then, let there be no doubt that on that day, you will be beheaded," Channabasappa said.

"... Are you playing with the emotions of Hindus? Don't do it...," warned Channabasappa, who was arrested today for his remarks which were described by the Chief Minister as "a provocative statement."

Channabasappa has been booked under IPC Sections 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation), Superintendent of Police Ravi Channannavar said.

20:05   Refugees return to fight ISIS
On an abandoned chicken farm, a few dozen Yazidi volunteers in mismatched uniforms go through their drills. They are training for an offensive they have long dreamed of: to reclaim the town of Sinjar, their home until ISIS stormed in.

The world watched in horror last year as some 50,000 Yazidis scrambled up Mount Sinjar in northern Iraq to escape the ISIS onslaught. Many more hundreds were massacred, while teenage girls and women were sold into slavery.

The volunteers at the camp have horrific stories to tell -- of their escape, the monthslong battles with ISIS that followed, the relatives they lost or who are still missing. So do the many Yazidi families still camping on the mountain.

19:11   Don't know when Rajan will be flown in: Mumbai Police chief
With decks being cleared for deportation of underworld don Chhota Rajan to India, Mumbai police today said they were yet to receive any official communication on when the arrested gangster will be brought back.

"We have no official information from the CBI on bringing back Rajan," Mumbai Police Commissioner Ahmed Javed told reporters.

He, however, said Mumbai Police has put in place all the arrangements for the safe custody of the 55-year-old don, when he shall be deported from Bali to the metropolis.

"We have examined two to three places in the city to keep the don safely while in custody," he said.

On allegations levelled by the gangster that a section of Mumbai police has been supporting his once-time boss and terrorist Dawood Ibrahim, Javed said,"I wouldn't like to say anything on such allegations by a gangster except that the security arrangements to keep him are appropriately made and police will follow all the rules and regulations."

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had confirmed that Rajan would be brought to Mumbai without divulging any further details.

Rajan, who was arrested at Bali airport on his arrival from Australia on October 25, is expected to be produced soon before an Indonesian court where the police there will submit details of the cases for which he is wanted in India.

55-year-old Rajan will be taken in a special aircraft, which has been brought from India.

"It is expected that Rajan will be flown to India tonight," an official said.

However, the travel may get delayed as a volcanic eruption affected flight operations in Bali. The volcanic eruption at Mount Rinjani near this popular tourist island has led to several flights being cancelled.

Rajan, who was arrested in this popular tourist town on his arrival from Australia on October 25, is wanted in over 75 heinous crimes ranging from murder, extortion to smuggling and drug trafficking.

19:02   No government has the right to censor an artist: Saleh Bakri
Palestinian actor Saleh Bakri says no government in the world has the right to stifle creativity and artistes have the power to oppose the move.

The 38-year-year-old "The Band's Visit" actor, took a decision to stop working in Israeli plays and films in 2009 after he saw his father, filmmaker Mohammad Bakri, suffer "10 years of persecution" for showing tragedies of the refugees in his movie.

"My father went through 10 years of persecution for making a film which showed the tragedies of the refugees. His life story affected me... No government in the world has a right to censor any artiste or film, but an artiste has the right to stand  nd say no to the government, in order to preserve freedom of speech and creative liberty," Saleh said.

The actor is a jury member of the India Gold Section at the 17th MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.

"I don't believe in boycott as an idea because I believe in unity, freedom and love. But in order to preserve it, you need to sometimes boycott a government or stand against an oppressive move," Saleh added.

17:55   Cong displaying its 'genetic' political intolerance: Naidu
As the Congress marched to Rashtrapati Bhawan against "growing intolerance", the Government and BJP today hit out saying "politically-displaced" people were challenging the democratic mandate and were resorting to such "dramatic actions" out of their desperation to stay relevant.

Alleging that "political intolerance" was in Congress' genes, Union Minister and senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu said they are going to the "wrong address" as they should have gone to Raj Bhawans instead, as such "stray unfortunate" incidents happened in states ruled by Congress or its friendly parties.

"Congress talking about intolerance is like devil quoting scriptures," he said, adding that the mass exodus and genocide of Kashmiri Pandits happened during their regime.

"It is a well-organised effort to defame our cultural ethos which are based on time-tested traditions of accommodation and acceptance. "This ongoing campaign is a clear effort to derail developmental momentum. They don't want Modi government to succeed. Now to say that intolerance is raising suddenly is far from truth," he said.

The International Space Station (ISS) has completed 15 years of continuous human presence and to mark the event NASA has released an official 'country song' that describes the epic journey.

Expedition 1, the first station crew, docked November 2, 2000 after launching two days earlier inside the Soyuz TM-31 spacecraft. The space station at the time consisted of just three modules.

Commander William Shepherd and Flight Engineers Sergei Krikalev and Yuri Gidzenko spent 141 days in space, saw two space shuttle missions and the addition of a solar array truss structure and the US Destiny laboratory module.

The US space agency released a delightful video about the space orbiting lab, set to a very country and banjo-filled tune.

The video details interesting facts about the station in twanging verse, according to 'The Verge'.

It also explains the station's logistics: it's about the size of a football field and weighs up to 1 million pounds.

The current six-member crew, Expedition 45, consists of NASA astronauts Scott Kelly and Kjell Lindgren, Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui and veteran cosmonauts Sergey Volkov, Mikhail Kornienko and Oleg Kononenko. Kelly and Kornienko are spending nearly a year in space.

Uber rape: Handing out the sentence, the prosecution said a strong message should go out.

The incident took place on December 5, 2014 when the victim, a finance executive working in Gurgaon, was headed home. Yadav was arrested on December 7, 2014 from Mathura.

As per the amended rape law a life term means Yadav will remain in jail till death.

15:58   Uber cabbie Shiv Kumar Yadav gets life term for raping passenger
Just in: Life sentence for Uber cabbie Shiv Kumar Yadav convicted of raping a 25-year-old passenger. The crime led to widespread protests and ban on taxi aggregators in the national capital.

Additional sessions judge Kaveri Baweja, who had convicted 32-year-old Yadav last month, gave Yadav a life term.

The court had on October 20 held Yadav guilty of kidnapping, threatening, raping and trying to strangulate his passenger. The offence of endangering womans life while raping her entails a minimum of 10 years rigorous imprisonment and a maximum of life term.

In its 99-page judgment, the special fast track court set up to deal with cases of sexual offences against women has said that the victim was reminded of the horrific December 16, 2012 gang rape incident after the driver of the US-based service provider had threatened to insert an iron rod in her body.

The court has held that threat perception was very much real in the mind of the 25-year-old victim when the driver had intimated and threatened her that too at an isolated spot in the late hours on December 5, 2014.

14:28   India is not intolerant, never will be, says Jaitley
Arun Jaitley takes a swipe at the increasing chorus on intolerance in the country. Asserting that India will never be intolerant, the finance minister today rejected the Congress' pitch on the issue, saying opponents must fight political battles politically, and wondered "where is the intolerance".

Calling as "aberrations" some of the recent incidents including the beef row, Jaitley insisted that there is "no justification" in returning of awards and the national situation "is absolutely peaceful. India is fully committed as a liberal democracy to peaceful co-existence". "There is an atmosphere of harmony. This country has never been intolerant and will never be intolerant," the BJP leader said.

He was replying to questions including about the protest march of Congress to President Pranab Mukherjee on the issue today and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Contemporary Sciences holding a seminar with 'Leftist' intellectuals on the issue.

Stressing that "political opponents must fight political battle politically", the Finance Minister said that it is "not fair" to create an issue due to political reasons and then link it to government even when incidents of crime are happening in states ruled by other parties.

"Where is the intolerance? We are the most vibrant democracy. The atmosphere will not change only by talking. If some incident happens like the one in Karnataka, which is Congress-ruled, you cannot link it to the central government to attack. That is not fair. "This is a crime and action should be taken against whoever commits crime. That is why people in the mainstream in the country have opposed it," he said.

At a press conference in Mumbai, when asked whether he would return an award -- on the lines of what writers and filmmakers have been doing as a form of protest -- he said on a light note, "No one can force me to do anything I don't want to, but let me get a National Award, and then I will return it." Channabasappa made these comments at a protest organized by the party against Siddaramaiah's statement that he would eat beef if he wished, and that the BJP did not have the right to question him on it.

11:04   Let bygones be bygones, Sena hints at truce with BJP after bitterly fought KDMC polls
A day after it emerged as the single largest party but fell short of a majority in Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC), the Shiv Sena today hinted at a truce with BJP, saying whatever happens during polls is temporary.

Notably, the BJP sharply increased its tally in the KDMC polls, the results of which were declared yesterday.

"There was a lot of mudslinging (between the BJP and Sena) while campaigning for the KDMC election...but, we need to respectfully accept the verdict given by people. Whatever happens during election is temporary and we should let bygones be bygones," an editorial in Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' said today.

Further indicating a mellowed stance as against its aggressive posturing before the polls which saw ties with ally BJP plunge to a new low, the Sena said everyone needs to be taken along to ensure development.

"We are worried about the development of Kalyan and Dombivali and thus, people have got us to the brink of majority. We need to take everyone along to ensure development," it said.

10:03   Substantive reforms will promote 'Make in India': AFTI
An American trade body focused on India has said that only "substantive reforms" will advance the NDA government's efforts to promote 'Make in India' and attract high value-added foreign direct investment.

"Only substantive reforms will advance the Modi government's efforts to promote 'Make in India', attract high value-added foreign direct investment, and move up the economic value chain," Alliance for Fair Trade with India said in a statement.

"In a highly competitive global economy, the lack of substantive reforms and movement toward world-class regulatory and IP standards only serves to hinder India's aspirations to rise as a globally-competitive country," said AFTI, which for the past few years has been pushing for reforms in India. In its statement, AFTI also expressed disappointment over last week's India-US Trade Policy Forum meeting.

00:35   Russia says air force hit Palmyra region in Syria
Russia's air force has struck the area around the Islamic State-held ancient city of Palmyra, the defence ministry said today, as Moscow pressed on with its bombing campaign in Syria.

"Su-25 jets hit a fortified IS position in the Tadmur area of Homs province," Moscow's defence ministry said in astatement, using the Arabic  name for Palmyra.

"As a result of a direct strike, a fortification, an underground bunker and anti-aircraft artillery were destroyed."

It appeared to be the first time that Russia has confirmed a strike close to the UNESCO World Heritage site, after Moscow denied Syrian state television claims that it hit the ancient city in early October.

Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Brtiain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, also said that Russian planes had targeted Palmyra with strikes today.

Khaled al-Homsi, an activist from Palmyra, said that Russian air strikes today struck the ancient citadel on the western edges of the historical site.
