23:26   Taliban leader Mullah Omar backs Afghan peace talks
Secretive Taliban leader Mullah Omar signaled support for Afghan peace talks in a message to supporters Wednesday.

"Concurrently with armed jihad, political endeavors and peaceful pathways for achieving these sacred goals is a legitimate Islamic principle and an integral part of Prophetic politics," he said in a message released on the eve of Eid celebrations to mark the end of Ramadan.

The Taliban leader said he had ordered the formation of a "Political Office" that was "entrusted with the responsibility of monitoring and conducting all political activities."

"The objective behind our political endeavors as well as contacts and interactions with countries of the world and our own Afghans is to bring an end to the occupation and to establish an independent Islamic system in our country," he said, after explaining at length why negotiating with "infidels" is permitted by the Quran and actions of the Prophet Mohammed.

His message comes a week after the Afghan government held face-to-face talks with Taliban representatives for the first time in an attempt to work toward a peace process.

Mujahedeen told to stay united
Mullah Omar also sent an apparent warning to ISIS, the Sunni extremist group that has seized a swath of territory across Syria and Iraq, not to create a new front in Afghanistan.

"Since maintaining the unity of jihadi front in our country is a religious obligation, we have therefore directed all our mujahedeen to preserve their unity and forcefully prevent all those elements who attempt to create differences, damage this jihadi front or try to disperse the mujahedeen," he said.

His words come after ISIS published a long interview in its English-language propaganda magazine, Dabiq, in which a Muslim scholar argued that jihadi forces should back the self-declared caliphate of leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi over the "regional" leader Mullah Omar.

There is a need to decriminalise penal provision for defamation and the "colonial law", which has been inevitably abused, needs to be re-examined rigorously, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal told the Supreme Court today.

16:32   I have been wronged, says Raj Kundra the day after
Suspended for life from taking part in any form of cricketing activity by the Supreme Court-appointed Justice Lodha Committee, Rajasthan Royals' former co-owner Raj Kundra today said, "I have been wronged".

The Lodha panel, in a landmark decision yesterday, suspended Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals from the Indian Premier League for two years in the 2013 spot-ixing and betting scandal.

"Today is a very depressing and sad day for me as my integrity has been questioned and my support in this investigation seems to have backfired," Kundra said in a statement.

Former CSK team principal Gurunath Meiyappan, who is the son-in-law of ICC Chairman N Srinivasan, and Kundra, both of whom were earlier found guilty of betting, were suspended for life from any cricketing activity undertaken by the BCCI.

"While I have great respect for the hon'ble Supreme Court and the judicial system, unfortunately in this case I cannot but feel that I have been wronged. I would request that they share the evidence that they have against me, so that I can at least have knowledge of the basis on which they have destroyed my hard-earned reputation. I have anyway washed my hands of cricket in India," Kundra said.

"I have always assisted and helped the Mudgal committee from day one till now. It's disheartening that despite there being no evidence whatsoever against me, I was still deemed to be guilty. I have not received till date a copy of their final report in which sweeping conclusions were recorded against me."

15:22   'Yakub Memon is being hanged because he's a Muslim'
Majeed Memon, leading criminal lawyer and a former defence lawyer in the 1993 bomb blasts case, questioned the need for the Maharashtra government's "hurry" in executing Yakub Memon even before the outcome of the second review petition. He said that executing Yakub Memon for the Maharashtra Government is easy because he is a Muslim.

"The government of Maharashtra is interested in executing this man for political reasons, communal reasons, for extra legal considerations which God only knows but definitely suspicious on the conduct of the part of government of Maharashtra.

"It would definitely be easy because he is a Muslim that he has to be hanged early which is very sad,' Majeed told ANI.

"Are they pre-empting the issue or are they already before-hand aware of the outcome of the review petition? They should have waited till the matter is finally decided," Majeed Memon, a top NCP leader and Member of Parliament, said.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party legislator Abu Azmi criticised the state government over "leaking of Memon's execution date".

14:49   Sensex gains nearly 1% on hopes Iran deal may lower oil cost
Indian shares rose nearly 1 percent on Wednesday, heading towards their highest close in 1-1/2 weeks on optimism that India, which imports almost a third of its crude requirements, would benefit from weak oil prices on the back of the Iran nuclear deal, reports Reuters.

Blue-chip stocks rose on hopes lower crude oil prices would help India control its twin deficits and inflation, thereby creating headroom for the central bank to ease borrowing costs further.

Oil prices dipped on Wednesday as the market prepared for a gradual increase of Iranian exports into an already oversupplied market from 2016 after six world powers and Tehran reached a nuclear deal on Tuesday.

14:21   German court finds "Bookkeeper of Auschwitz" guilty
A 94-year-old German man who worked as a bookkeeper at the Auschwitz death camp was convicted on Wednesday of being an accessory to the murder of 300,000 people and sentenced to four years in prison, in what could be one of the last big Holocaust trials.

Oskar Groening did not kill anyone himself while working at the camp in Nazi-occupied Poland, but prosecutors argued that by sorting the bank notes from trainloads of arriving Jews he helped support the regime responsible for mass murder.

White-haired Groening, who has been on trial since April, has admitted moral guilt but said it was up to the court to decide whether he was legally guilty. He said earlier this month he could only ask God to forgive him as he was not entitled to ask this of victims of the Holocaust.

The trial went to the heart of the question of whether people who were small cogs in the Nazi machinery, but did not actively participate in the killing of 6 million Jews during the Holocaust, were guilty of crimes. Until recently, the answer from the German justice system was no.

During his time at Auschwitz, Groening's job was to collect the belongings of the deportees after they arrived at the camp by train and had been put through a selection process that resulted in many being sent directly to the gas chambers. Read more

13:41   AAP can air ads 'glorifying' Kejriwal, rules Delhi HC
In a major relief to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) the Delhi High Court has said it will not restrain the party from airing ads allegedly glorifying Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.

The court took up the hearing of the plea filed by Congress leader Ajay Maken against misuse of public funds by the Delhi government to promote the AAP.

Maken had earlier approached the Supreme Court accusing the AAP government of flouting the apex court regulations on public advertisements but the apex court refused to entertain plea saying "other efficacious remedies are available with him." He then approached the High Court over the issue.

In his plea, Maken alleged that Kejriwal government is wasting public funds by spending heavily on its publicity campaign.

Maken says that the AAP ad campaign violates the Governmental Advertising (Content Regulation) Guidelines, 2014, set by the Supreme Court.

The Congress leader's counsel said that the AAP government increased the budgetary allocation for the same from Rs 23.7 crore in the year to 2014-15 to Rs 526 crore.

The apex court had on May 13 barred publication of photos of leaders in government advertisements except those of the President, Prime Minister and Chief Justice of India while decrying "personality cult" as an anti-thesis of democracy.

13:29   Now you see him, now you don't! Mexico drug lord's daring prison break
Mexico's government has released a video showing fugitive drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman going into his prison cell's shower and bending down behind a short dividing wall before disappearing. While Guzman paced back and forth several times between the bathroom area and his bed before vanishing, National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido said it was common behavior for prison inmates. The small hole on the shower floor that Guzman, 58, slipped into for his daring escape late Saturday is not seen in the footage.

While a surveillance camera was on a corner outside the cell and another inside pointing toward the shower, authorities said they had two blind spots to protect the inmate's privacy.

Rubido said Guzman was last seen at 8:52 pm, without indicating how long it took for prison guards to sound the alarm. Guzman's second escape from a maximum-security prison in 14 years is a huge embarrassment to President Enrique Pena Nieto's administration, which had celebrated the capture of the world's most wanted drug baron just 17 months ago.

11:26   Indian tourist arrested in China for suspected terror link
An Indian is reported among a group of 20 foreign tourists who have been arrested in northern China for suspected links to "a terror group"  according to reports by Britain's Foreign Office and a South African charity.

An Indian embassy spokesman told Reuters he had no information on the matter. China has agreed to release 11 of the tourists, but the rest will continue to be held without charge at a detention center in Inner Mongolia, the South African charity, Gift of the Givers Foundation, said.

Chinese authorities said some of those arrested had been watching propaganda videos from a banned group in their hotel room, the charity added in its statement.

The group was on a 47-day tour of the country when they were detained at an airport in the Inner Mongolian city of Erdos. Their tour operator realized something had gone "horribly wrong" on Sunday, two days later, the foundation said, when he hadn't heard from them.

"Consular staff have visited the group to provide assistance and we are liaising with Chinese authorities," a British Foreign Office spokesman told Reuters.

Chinese law enforcement authorities could not be immediately reached for comment. "These individuals have no terror links, no criminal record in their country," said Gift of the Givers, which has negotiated hostage releases.

Several of those detained are relatives of Shameel Joosub, chief executive of telecoms company Vodacom Group Ltd., the charity added

11:12   Will Rajiv Gandhi killers be released? SC to decide today
The Supreme Court may today decide on the release of seven death-row convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

The issue will be taken up by a five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice HL Dattu and Justices Ibrahim Kalifulla, Pinaki Ghose, AM Sapre and UU Lalit.

In February last year, the Supreme Court had commuted the death sentences of three of the seven convicts -- Murugan, Santhan and Periarivalan -- to life terms.

Subsequently, the Tamil Nadu government, exercising its remission powers, had ordered their release along with four other convicts who are serving life terms - Nalini, Robert Pius, Jayakumar and Ravichandran.

The Centre had, however, obtained stay on the convicts' release from the apex court.

The central government had argued before a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court that since the case was being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation, only it had the power of remission and not the state government.

The three-judge bench had then referred the matter to a five-judge Constitution Bench.

A division bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justice Shree Narain Shukla passed the order on a public interest litigation petition. According to petitioner's counsel H S Jain, the arguments in this matter concluded today.

03:11   Climate, ISIS group top list of global worries: poll
Climate change is a big worry in Latin America, Asia and Africa, but the Islamic State group spells more anxiety among Europeans and North Americans, a global opinion poll released today suggests.

The Pew Research Center in Washington said it interviewed 45,435 respondents in 40 countries to see what issues were most likely to keep them awake at night.

Sixty-one per cent in Latin America identified climate change as their biggest worry, the highest proportion of any region, said Pew in a summary of its findings.

Concern was greatest in Peru and Brazil, running at 75 per cent in both nations, it said.

Climate change was similarly the top concern for 59 per cent of Africans surveyed in nine countries, with fear expressed most frequently in Burkina Faso (79 per cent), Uganda (74 per cent) and Ghana (71 per cent).

In the Asia-Pacific region, a majority in half of the 10 countries surveyed identified climate change as the top issue, with the proportion running as high as 73 per cent in India and 72 per cent in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, the IS group was the leading worry in Europe, where 70 per cent expressed serious concern about the threat that it represents, Pew said.

Sixty-eight per cent of Americans and 58 per cent of Canadians felt likewise, and IS was also the top concern for a majority of respondents in South Korea, Japan, Australia and Indonesia.

Fear of IS was shared by respondents in the Middle East, where 84 per cent of Lebanese -- including 90 per cent of its Sunnis and 87 per cent of its Shias -- said they were very concerned by the group's proliferation.

Sixty-two per cent of respondents in Jordan and 54 per cent in the Palestinian territories agreed with that concern, Pew said.

The full survey, which was conducted from March 25 to March 27, appears at www.pewglobal.org.

01:29   Snowden filmmaker sues US govt over border stops
Filmmaker Laura Poitras, whose documentary about fugitive intelligence leaker Edward Snowden won an Oscar, is suing the US government to find out why she was repeatedly detained at immigration checkpoints.

Poitras is seeking the release of six years of records that document how she was searched, questioned and sometimes held for hours at US and foreign airports on more than 50 occasions between 2006 and 2012.

"I'm filing this lawsuit because the government uses the US border to bypass the rule of law," she said in a statement issued by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a non-profit watchdog group that is representing her.

"This simply should not be tolerated in a democracy," added Poitras, winner of this year's best documentary feature Oscar for "Citizenfour," which describes Snowden's revelations about mass surveillance by the National Security Agency.

Poitras said her Freedom of Information Act lawsuit is also meant to benefit herself and others "who have been subjected to years of Kafkaesque harassment at the borders."

"We have a right to know how this system works and how we are targeted," she said.

On Saturday, the Sinaloa cartel leader escaped from the maximum security prison in Almoloya de Jurez. It is believed he stepped into a shower, crawled through a hole and vanished through a mile-long tunnel apparently built just for him.

The information the U.S. officials heard isn't uncommon, the law enforcement official stressed, adding that they had no specific details about an escape but, as is routine, passed along what they knew to Mexican authorities.
