23:38   When we were receiving lathis, Bedi was busy tweeting: Vishwas
AAP leader Kumar Vishwas today launched a scathing attack on Narendra Modi-led BJP and the party's newest entrant Kiran Bedi, and claimed that only an AAP government could make Delhi corruption-free.

"The Centre has arrogance. And, we see the same in BJP's politicians during tv debates...I do agree that the Centre should be given time but in Delhi we need the AAP," he claimed.

Vishwas was addressing a rally in east Delhi's Patparganj in support of fellow AAP leader Manish Sisodia, who today filed his nominations for the February 7 Delhi assembly polls.

Hitting out at his former anti-graft comrade Bedi, Vishwas, reminding of her words during the anti-corruption campaign days, alleged that "when we (Vishwas and Sisodia) were receiving lathis during the 'Damini' protests, Bedi was busy tweeting."

22:23   Only BJP in Delhi can coordinate with Centre for devp: Bedi
In a veiled attack on AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi today called upon people of Delhi to vote for the BJP saying it can coordinate with the Centre for the city's overall development instead of sitting on dharna.

In a roadshow at Rohini, she also projected herself as the party's face in the polls, promising to bring in lot of changes in people's lives if BJP came to power.

"Ensuring security of women will be top priority," she said, adding trained volunteers will be inducted to strengthen civil defence forces. In an apparent attack on Kejriwal, she said the habit of sitting on dharnas and confrontational attitude will never help the city and its people.

"If the government goes to Jantar Mantar, then nothing will happen. This time vote for stable government and government with full majority. The government will be of new politics. It will not be a confrontational government. It will be a government of good governance," she said.

21:46   Ceasefire reached in Yemen after day of heavy fighting
Government forces and rebels in Yemen agreed to a ceasefire Monday after heavy fighting in the capital, Sanaa, Yemen's interior minister and a rebel official said.

The fighting pits Yemen, a U.S. ally in the battle against al Qaeda, against rebels known as Houthis -- Shia Muslims who have long felt marginalised in the majority Sunni country.

Turmoil between the two sides is worrisome to the West because a power vacuum in Yemen could benefit al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, a terrorist organization that took credit for the recent attacks in Paris and tried to blow up a plane landing in Detroit in 2009.

20:00   Agra Expressway may be closed briefly on Jan 27 for Obama
On January 27, the Yamuna Expressway which connects Delhi with Agra, may be closed for normal traffic for a few hours as a back up route for US President Barack Obama who will be visiting Taj Mahal.

Government sources today said Obama is slated to travel to Agra by air on that day but the six-lane 165 km-long Expressway may be shut down for commoners as part of contingency plans in case the air route cannot be used.

"If the flight option fails, then a contingency plan of a road route will be there whereby whichever road is identified will be stopped for traffic for a few hours before the dignitary takes the route," the sources said indicating security establishment's preference for Yamuna Expressway in such an eventuality.

Such contingency plan is readied whenever a highly protected head of state visits India, the sources said.

Although the sources did not give specific details, authorities may be keeping in the mind the fact that dense fog has been preventing flight operations in the mornings.

The Yamuna Expressway is a controlled-access route.

15:13   Goodbye Mamata! TMC MP Dinesh Trivedi to join BJP?
Fasten your seat belts for this news rollercoaster. Our sources tell us that TMC MP Dinesh Trivedi has plans to join the BJP.

But the TMC is not overly worried about the move with some MPs saying the party has been well rid of him. Sources told us that MPs have said that they were willing for the TMC to be weak, but unwanted elements should be weeded out.

Trivedi does not share a great relationship with TMC chief Mamata Banerjee after she sacked him as the railway minister for a nominal hike in passenger fares in the 2012 rail budget.

Today, Congress leader Krishna Tirath also joined the BJP.

Sakshi Maharaj, the MP from Unnao, said that the murderer of Mahatma Gandhi, Nathuram Godse, was a true patriot. Sadhvi Jyoti Niranjana, MP from Fatehpur (and who had been recently inducted into the council of ministers), said that all those who did not worship Lord Rama or vote for her party were " haramzadon" (a term that we can politely translate as 'rascals', although the original Hindustani admits of more pejorative connotations). 11:55   Can Obama's visit lift India-US trade ties out of gloom?
The visit of United States President Barack Obama to India, as the first American leader to be chief guest at the Republic Day parade, has raised high expectations.

Perhaps too high, as the difficulties that bedevil the United States-India bilateral relationship are difficult indeed to overcome.

While the two countries retain a common view of the world in many ways, and the desire to balance a rising China remains the unspoken lynchpin of ever stronger co-operation between New Delhi and Washington, the many roadblocks in the path cannot be wished away -- especially since these obstacles are essentially a product of bureaucratic slowness and contradictions that are inherent to both capitals.

11:10   Sena bites into McDonald's, asks: When will acche din come for poor?
Amid controversy over a street child being thrown out of a McDonald's restaurant in Pune, the Shiv Sena, which is a part of BJP-led government in Maharashtra, today wondered as to when will 'Acche Din' (good days) arrive for the poor in the country.

"This (Mc Donalds) incident depicts the gap between the rich and the poor in this country. Discussions on such incidents will continue, but mere discussions will not solve the problem of the poor children," the Sena said in an editorial in its mouthpiece 'Saamana.'

"We will continue to find poor children standing on roads, below flyovers, near signals on railway stations and outside restaurants with hands on their stomach. What will happen to these children ? When will 'Acche Din' (good days) really come for them," it asked, referring to BJP's election slogan.

"There is no law that prohibits a street child from entering an expensive restaurant. But such restaurants are not made for the poor, which is why the underprivileged need to satisfy their hunger by eating cheap food items like 'vada paav'," the Sena said.

"In the case of the Pune restaurant, the child did not have money to buy food in McDonald's. But there was someone willing to pay money to buy happiness for that child. But the restaurant threw him out stating that their outlet is not meant for such (poor) people. This shows the prevailing divide between the two classes in the society," the Sena added.

According to media reports, a street child was thrown out of the restaurant in Pune by a staff member on January 10, after allegedly saying that "these kind of people are not allowed here".
