Intel joins effort to introduce multimedia to villagers

Under this programme, a van equipped with multimedia computers, software and a trainer will cover 60 villages in the next 12 months, reaching out to over 4,000 children per village.

Bhimtal, Uttar Pradesh, will be the first halt for the van. Intel's education initiative in India is aimed at creating awareness about the benefits of multimedia computers and the Internet as a learning tool, Intel South Asia Director Atul Vijaykar said while flagging off the mobile computer van.

'Computers for you' has been a regular activity at the National Science Centre. Under this programme, NSC has been sending different science and technology exhibits to villages to promote awareness and interest in science.

Over 10,000 children from the villages of Oon and Karnal have visited the site to see the computers.

''Given the tremendous interest in computers among these children, we intend to use 'Computers for you' programme to not only take the computers to these children, but more importantly, use the computers to increase their interest in education.'' National Science Centre Director P Bhaumik said.

Intel has already set up 'Cyberskools' at the National Science Centres in Bombay and New Delhi.

Over 50,000 children and 5,000 teachers are given exposure to computers annually through the Cyberskools. The Cyberskool also organises a weekend parent training programme where children teach their parents how to use computers and share knowledge of multimedia and Internet.

The Cyberskool also organises regular creativity workshops for children and special workshops for under privileged children.
