HP plans Web expressway

Email this story to a friend. Hewlett-Packard Company plans to build a Web 'expressway' that will allow businesses and consumers to bypass congested Internet traffic.

The company said it would work closely with its partners, including leading application and database vendors and, for networking products, Cisco Systems, to develop the expressway.

HP, in a statement, said its long-term plan is to leverage its Web 'quality of service' capabilities for servers, measurement and management to improve service-level guarantees on the Internet.

Its blueprint for the Web expressway is to build Web QoS technologies into the server, bridge these mission-critical capabilities across the Internet and deliver them to the virtual doorstep of end users by integrating this into the consumers' applications.

In addition, HP and Cisco are collaborating to deliver QoS solutions for the enterprise to ensure that mission-critical applications, such as enterprise resource planning, electronic trading applications and telemedicine, receive the level of service they require.

The first product solution to be released under the HP and Cisco joint effort is the 'dynamic local director' solution, an HP statement read.

It dynamically distributes Internet traffic across a cluster of HP 9000 enterprise servers based on feedback from each server about its relative ability to handle the load.
