23:17   Rebel Tripura Congress workers ransack party office
Rebel party workers on Saturday ransacked Congress Bhavan in Agartala in protest against All India Congress Committee's decision to suspend party MLA Sudip Roy Barman who was allegedly involved in anti-party activities.

As the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Birjit Sinha was announcing the suspension letter issued by V Narayanswami, Congress in-charge of north-eastern state during a press conference, Barman's supporters started gathering outside the office and raised slogans against Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.

Gradually, the protest became stronger and the protesters entered the Congress office and ransacked it.

The unruly protesters broke chairs, window shields, television sets, computer, fax machine and other materials besides attacking the posters of Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi with shoes terming them traitors.

They view that the decision of the AICC of suspending of Barman, who had protested against decision of the Congress-Communist Party of India-Marxist alliance in West Bengal, was anti-democratic.

Meanwhile, Tripura PCC president Sinha said that Barman, along with 14 other rebel leaders, were suspended as the Congress leadership is not satisfied with the reply to their show cause notice served against them for violating party discipline by openly criticising the Congress leadership in media.

Sinha viewed those who were protesting had resigned from their party post few days back and assured legal action against those who have destroyed Congress property.

21:35   Gujarat accords minority status to Jain community
The Gujarat government today issued a government resolution giving minority status to the Jain community. Transport Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party state unit chief Vijay Rupani made the announcement.

The previous United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre had conferred the minority status on the community at the national level in January 2014.

"Chief Minister Anandiben Patel today decided to accord the minority status to the Jain community. The matter had been put on hold for some time due to the Patidar reservation agitation," said Rupani who himself is a Jain.

"A GR has been issued today," he added.

The decision was also pending so far because a large section of the Jain community felt that several rituals of the community are similar to those practised by the Hindus, so the Jains are a part of the Hindu community and should not be treated as separate entity, he said.

"The decision has nothing to do with reservations. The status will benefit the poor among the Jain community as they can avail of various scholarships, government welfare schemes. Jain institutions will get special status like the one given to Christian and Muslim institutions," he said.

The decision comes within a week of the state government awarding 10 per cent reservation to the economically backward class among the upper castes in the face of Patel (Patidar) community's agitation for OBC quota.

14:46   Deal or no deal? Pakistan rejects US conditions for sale of F-16s‏
Pakistan needs modern F-16 fighter jets for its ongoing war against terrorism but rejects the conditions the United States has attached with their sale, said Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry. the foreign secretary said no conditions should be attached to the sale of F-16s because Pakistan plans to use the jets only for the purpose of fighting terrorists.

The US State Department earlier this week said Pakistan will have to pay from its own funds if it wants to buy F-16 fighter jets, after the US Congress last month withdrew funds for the deal to force Pakistan to act against the Haqqani network.

Chaudhry said Saturday that diplomatic efforts were underway to convince the Congress to subsidise the sale of the fighter jets.

Pakistan had earlier reached an understanding with the US for buying eight F-16 planes. Under the deal, Pakistan was required to pay about $270m from its national funds. The US was supposed to provide the rest from its Foreign Military Financing fund.

Pakistan has conveyed to the US that it does not have the money to buy F-16 jets from its resources and has cautioned that if the stalemate over funding is not resolved it may consider buying some other fighter aircraft to meet its needs.

Sounding a word of caution to students on education loans, RBI governor Raghuram Rajan has said they should not fall prey to 'unscrupulous schools' which leave them with high debt and "useless degrees".

Observing that education at high quality research universities will remain expensive in near future, he said efforts should be made to make degrees affordable to all deserving students.

One part of the solution is student loans, he said, adding "we have to be careful that student loans are repaid in full by those who have the means, while they are forgiven in part for those who fall on bad times, or those who take low paying public service jobs."

The Governor said private education across the world is expensive and is getting more expensive all the time.

03:58   UK mosques ask women to shun Facebook, trousers: report
Many mosques in the United Kingdom propagate extremely strict rules of conduct for women, asking them to delete their Facebook accounts, not to leave their houses without their husbands' permission, and to avoid wearing trousers, a research report released on Friday said.
The research conducted by The Times showed rulings published by mosques and Islamic associations around Britain.
Under a section titled 'Islamic articles', the Croydon Mosque and Islamic Centre in London published a document - 'Advice for the husband and wife'.
Written by a mufti at the mosque, it says, "A woman should seek her husband's permission when leaving the house and should not do so without his knowledge".
The Central Masjid of Blackburn in northwest England has published a web post called 'Dangers of Facebook'.

It cites a quotation from the Quran about the sin of alcohol, and applies it to the social network.

"Facebook has opened the doors for sin. Muslim girls and women alike have become prey to this evil," it says.
It describes the social media website as a "vicious network".
The Green Lane Masjid in Birmingham tells one woman worshipper that wearing trousers is not permitted even in front of her husband.
Trousers show off "the details of her body. The ones who wear trousers are men, and the Prophet cursed women who imitate men," a post by the mosque quoting an Islamic scholar reads.
Khola Hasan, a female scholar at the Islamic Sharia Council in London, told the newspaper, "These views are clearly outdated and reflect a patriarchal, narrow worldview that is out of step with the rest of the Muslim world".

03:14   Stop piracy: Hollywood studio to Meerut university
Renowned Hollywood film studio Paramount Pictures has served a notice to Meerut's Chaudhary Charan Singh University after a large number of students illegally downloaded movies through the varsity's IP address, The Times of India reported.

The CCSU had started a free WiFi service for students last year. Since the university had not set up any firewall, students had been downloading movies and TV series without restriction.

The National Informatics Centre  New Delhi, on Friday sent a copy of the notice to the CCSU. The NIC had received the legal notice from one Adrian Leatherland from the Australia-based anti-piracy firm IP-Echelon.

The Los Angeles-based Paramount Pictures is a client of IP-Echelon, which monitors online piracy across 25 countries. One of the firm's biggest clients is HBO, which had hired it last year to track down "pirates" who were leaking episodes of its hit show 'Game of Thrones' online.

In the notice sent to NIC, IP-Echelon stated that they had found that CCSU's IP address has been used to illegally download and distribute video files which are exclusively owned by its client Paramount.

"IP-Echelon has a good faith belief that the Paramount video content has not been authorized for sharing or distribution by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law. I also assert that the information contained in this notice is accurate to the best of our knowledge. We are requesting your immediate assistance in removing and disabling access to the infringing material from your network. We also ask that you ensure the user and IP address owner refrains from future use and sharing of Paramount materials and property," the notice read.

Leatherland further writes that in complying with the notice, NIC should not destroy any evidence, which may be relevant in a lawsuit, relating to the alleged infringement, including all associated electronic documents and data relating to the presence of infringing items on their network, which shall be preserved while disabling public access, irrespective of any document retention or corporate policy to the contrary.

02:31   Egypt official blames 'Tom and Jerry' for spreading violence
An Egyptian government official has blamed the animated "Tom and Jerry" series for allegedly spreading a culture of violence, AP has reported.

The accusations by Salah Abdel-Sadek, head of State Information Service, which is affiliated with the presidency, came at a forum held in Cairo this week.

Abdel-Sadek told academics, media specialists, and public figures who had gathered to discuss violence that video games and cartoons are to blame.

He said children see Tom Cat and Jerry Mouse "beat and blow up with explosives" one another and "in their minds, they see this as normal."

The remarks are starkly at odds with the political reality of Egypt.

The Mideast country is struggling with a home-grown Islamic insurgency and regularly sees heavy-handed security measures used against protesters. Thousands of political dissidents are imprisoned.

01:52   Two dead in suburban Washington shootings
Two people were killed and two others wounded in a pair of shootings on Friday in the suburbs of Washington, and authorities sought a federal law enforcement officer.
The police put out a bulletin seeking help in locating Eulalio Tordil, a 62-year-old officer in the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Protective Service.
Tordil is sought in the Thursday's shooting death of his wife at a school in Prince George's County, Maryland, which occurred on the eve of the two incidents in adjacent Montgomery County.
On Fridya, gunfire broke out at the Westfield Mall in Bethesda, with one man killed and two people wounded.
A second shooting later at a supermarket in nearby Aspen Hill, Maryland left one woman dead.
"This continues to be a very active investigation," Montgomery County police Captain Paul Starks told reporters.

00:41   Brazil Senate committee recommends Rousseff impeachment
A Brazilian Senate committee voted on Friday to recommend starting an impeachment trial against President Dilma Rousseff, who now faces being suspended from office in less than a week.
The special committee's decision was non-binding but marked the last formal stage before the full Senate votes Wednesday on whether to put the leftist leader on trial.
"The case now goes to the full federal Senate," announced opposition Senator Raimundo Lira.
With the Senate considered almost certain to open the trial next week, Rousseff is preparing to step aside for up to six months while the 81 senators decide her fate, plunging Brazil into ever deeper political infighting.
As soon as Rousseff is suspended Vice President Michel Temer, a center-right politician whose party recently broke off its shaky alliance with Rousseff's Workers' Party, would become interim president.
At the end of the trial, which could take months, a two thirds majority would be needed to remove Rousseff from office.
The impeachment battle, a crumbling economy, and corruption probes against dozens of leading politicians and business executives have left Latin America's biggest country in turmoil ahead of the Rio Olympics this August.
The impeachment is based on accusations that Rousseff made illegal accounting maneuvers to mask the depth of Brazil's economic troubles during her tight 2014 reelection victory.
The country's first female president says the charges are trumped up to turn the impeachment process into a coup d'etat and that she will not give in.

00:22   White House race not 'reality show': Obama takes aim at Trump
In his first comment on Donald Trump after he was declared presumptive Republican nominee, United States President Barack Obama on Friday warned that the race to the White House was not a "reality show" and called for a close scrutiny of the controversial billionaire's past record and statements.
"This is not entertainment, this is not a reality show. This is a contest for the presidency of the US," Obama said.
"With respect to the Republican process and Mr Trump, there's going to be plenty of time to talk about his positions on various issues. He has a long record that needs to be examined. And I think it's important for us to take seriously the statements he's made in the past," Obama told reporters.
This was Obama's first comment on Trump, who has courted controversies on several matters including on migrant issue and inconsistent foreign policy stance, after the outspoken real-estate mogul became the presumptive nominee last week.
Trump has provoked number of protests with his controversial speeches and proposals ranging from banning Muslims from entering the US to building a wall to keep out Mexican migrants to slashing US funding for NATO.
"I think I just want to emphasize the degree to which we are in serious times and this is a really serious job," Obama said and added that every candidate, every nominee needs to be subject to exacting standards and genuine scrutiny.
