As ash from Chile's Calbuco Volcano spread east into Argentina, geologists warned of the potential for more activity Friday.

"There is more seismic activity in his hour, and we think there will be more activity today," Helmuth Huerta, a spokesman for the National Geological and Mineral Service of Chile, told CNN.

The volcano has already erupted twice this week, spewing about 23 inches (60 centimeters) of ash in some places, according to the Ministry of Interior and Public Safety.

23:23   Al Qaeda, allies advance on Syrian regime bastion: monitor
Al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate and other Islamist fighters made gains today in a joint offensive on the last major regime bastion in the northwest province of Idlib, a monitor said.

The assault, which began yesterday, has seen Al-Nusra Front and allied groups seize three checkpoints around the large town of Jisr al-Shughur, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The town is strategically located near the border with Turkey and along a key route leading west to the regime's stronghold of Latakia province.

"There are very fierce clashes ongoing since the early morning, and intense aerial bombing. The regime has conducted 34 air strikes in the area since Friday morning," Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

He said Al-Nusra Front had launched a wave of suicide attacks on the town's outskirts and sent 15 fighters wearing suicide belts into Jisr al-Shughur itself.

23:00   Vatican 'possible target' in terror plot
Italian authorities said they had launched a "vast anti-terrorism operation" Friday, going after suspects associated with al Qaeda who had discussed a range of targets, including the Vatican.

Some members of the terrorist cell had direct contact with al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden before his death in Pakistan in 2011, wiretaps showed, Italy's state-run ANSA news agency reported.

And wiretaps and other intelligence revealed that the group planned to carry out terrorist attacks in Afghanistan and Pakistan as well as in Italy, according to Caligari Chief Prosecutor Mauro Mura.

Some evidence indicated the Vatican was among the targets considered, police said. Talk of this took place March 2010, around the time a possible suicide bomber from Afghanistan entered Italy, Mura said.

Britain's Conservative Party has launched a new campaign song in Hindi aimed at wooing Indian-origin voters in the run up to the May 7 general elections.

Prime Minister David Cameron led party, which heads the current coalition government in the country, launched 'Neela Hai Aasma (Blue Sky)' today in reference to the symbolic blue colour of the party.

The catchy tune set to Indian beats encourages the British Indian community to join hands with the British PM in taking the UK forward with a chorus repeating the name 'David Cameron'.  

The Conservative Party has the largest number of British Indian parliamentary candidates standing for election including four incumbent MPs '" Shailesh Vara (minister of justice), Priti Patel (Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury and Indian Diaspora Champion), Alok Sharma (vice-chairman of the Conservative Party and Member of the Treasury select committee) and Paul Uppal (Member of No 10 policy board) together with 14 new candidates of British Indian origin," the Conservative Friends of India group, which commissioned the ditty, said in a statement.

21:39   Pacheco case: Activist now files police case against Parrikar
Social activist and lawyer Aires Rodrigues, whose petition led to a court here to issue warrant for search of the official residence of Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, today filed a police case against the former Goa chief minister for "harbouring" the absconding state minister Fransisco Miccky Pacheco.

In a complaint filed with Colva police station under section 216 of IPC, Rodrigues said, "As per reliable information, the accused (Pacheco) is holed up at 10, Akbar Road (Delhi) and was being sheltered by Parrikar in his official bungalow." 

Superintendent of Police Shekhar Prabhudesai confirmed the development and said that police would examine the complaint before taking further action.

21:19   India or Bharat: SC seeks response from government
'India should be named Bharat', a demand on which the Supreme Court has sought comments from the Centre and the states.

The apex court today decided to examine questions raised on the naming of the country and sought response from the Centre on the plea demanding change in the name from 'India' to 'Bharat'. A bench comprising Chief Justice H L Dattu and Justice Arun Mishra also issued notice to all state governments and union territories on the PIL which called for restraining the Centre from using the name of India for any government purposes and in official papers.

The petition filed by Niranjan Bhatwal, claiming to be a social activist from Maharashtra, said that even the non- government organisations and corporates should be directed to use 'Bharat' for all official and unofficial purposes.

21:17   Telugu actress booked in redsanders smuggling case
A Telugu actress has been booked in a red sanders smuggling case by the Andhra Pradesh police on charges of conspiring with the smugglers of the precious wood.

 "A hunt has been launched to nab Neetu Agarwal (the actress)," Kurnool District Superintendent of Police A Ravi Krishna told PTI over phone. 

The actress has been named as accused number 9 in the red sanders smuggling case where 34 logs had been seized in Kurnool about two months ago. 

 YSR Congress leader and Chagalamarri mandal president Kondampalli Mastan Vali was arrested on April 13 in connection with the case. Agarwal, who has worked in the movie "Prema Prayanam" produced by Vali in 2013, transferred money from her bank account to the accounts of red sanders smugglers.

"We have identified that some money has been transferred from her bank account to the accounts of red sanders smugglers. We are on the lookout for her," the SP said. He added that police were in the process of freezing her bank account.

Actor Akshay Kumar feels the recent suicide by farmer Gajendra Singh at an Aam Aadmi Party rally in Delhi is ;disheartening' as we have forgotten the kisan (farmer) in "jai jawan jai kisan' catchphrase.

"The recent suicide by a farmer is very sad and disheartening... I have heard the saying 'jai jawan jai kisan', but now I feel that we have taken out the 'kisan' part from the famous slogan," Akshay told reporters.

The 47-year-old actor was here to promote his upcoming film "Gabbar is Back", which deals with the issue of corruption in the country. 

"The corruption issues which we are featuring in the film are all real issues and I am just fighting with them without disclosing the real names in the film. Corruption is a very relatable issue in our country as we all have dealt with it at some point of our life," he said.

20:31   Christie's to auction rare Amrita Sher-Gil self-portrait
An undiscovered self-portrait of eminent Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil will go under hammer here on June 10.

The portrait, which dates back to 1931 and depicts one of India's most celebrated modern artists at the age of 18, will be up for sale in the annual South Asian Modern and Contemporary Art Sale at Christie's with a pre-sale estimate of 1 to 1.8 million pounds.

"This is the first painting by the artist ever to be offered in London, and one of only eight canvases by Sher-Gil to be offered at auction globally," Christie's said in a statement.

"Works by the artist are defined as 'National Art Treasures' by the Indian Government and deemed of such national importance to Indian culture that they are non-exportable if sourced in India, and when sold in India, must remain in the country. Therefore, it is very rare that important paintings by Sher-Gil are offered outside of India,' it added.

20:28   SC to hear case on cattle smuggling to B'Desh
A division bench of the Supreme Court will hear a writ petition by the Shree Akhil Bharat Krishi Goseva Sangh to stop illegal transport of cows to Bangladesh.

The petition says thousands of cows are being smuggled every year along the Indo-Bangladesh border. Taking serious note on the issue, the Supreme court has sent notice to 14 states and 32 government agencies.On basis of a research report prepared by an NGO Shree Vardhman Pariwar, the petitioners have alleged that transporters put chilli powder in eyes of cows to prevent them from sitting and transporting 300 cows in one truck, which can hardly accommodate 100.

In exchange, Bangladesh sends explosive material, arms and ammunitions, fake currency notes and sometimes cash which ultimately help terrorists.

The Supreme Court has decided to attach this petition to Nepal's Gadhimahi case, in which cattle are smuggled to be sacrificed at the Hindu festival. Eminent advocates Soli Sorabjee and Dr Manish Singhvi are appearing for the petitioners.

20:27   India receives first upgraded Mirage 2000 fighter aircraft
The Indian Air Force today received the first two upgraded Mirage-2000 aircrafts from France under a Rs 10,000 crore deal. The two upgraded aircraft, flown in by IAF pilots from France covering Greece, Egypt and Qatar in over seven days, landed at the Gwalior air force station.

On arrival, the two aircraft were accorded the traditional 'Water Cannon Salute'. The contract for upgradation was signed with Thales Aeroportes Systems and Dassault Aviation of France.

The upgrade enhances the overall capability of aircrafts by equipping them with advanced avionics, weapons and self protection suites.

19:26   753 armymen martyred in Op Rakshak during 8 yrs in J&K
A total of 753 Army personnel have been martyred during the last eight years in Operation Rakshak, the counter-insurgency operation of the Army in Jammu and Kashmir, Lok Sabha was informed today.

The worst period for the Army in the state since 2007 has been the year itself when it lost 172 personnel, figures given by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar in a written reply to Lok Sabha showed.

The casualty figure dipped to 73 in 2009 but rose in 2010 with 107 personnel killed. 

In 2013 and 2014, the figure stood at 51 and 54 respectively. In 2015, 7 Army personnel have lost their lives till April 20, according to the written reply.

19:25   It's time for Darbar Move in Jammu and Kashmir
The civil secretariat and other offices of the Jammu and Kashmir government closed in the winter capital city of Jammu today and would now re-open in the summer capital city of Srinagar on May 5 as part of over a century old practice of "Darbar Move".

After remaining operational in Jammu for nearly six months, the offices of the civil secretariat and other state government offices closed today to reopen in Srinagar in May. 

The government has hired more than 100 vehicles including busses and trucks to move official records and staff to Kashmir from Jammu.

In view of the 'Darbar Move' the traffic department has decided to allow only one way traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway for April 25 and 26 so as to provide smooth passage to the Kashmir bound vehicles of the 'Darbar'.

"No Jammu bound vehicle will be allowed to ply on the Jammu Srinagar highway on April 25 and 26 not even the military convoys in view of the Darbar move" an official said.

Aam Aadmi Party's Sanjay Singh, who visited Dausa in Rajasthan, handed over a Rs 10 lakh cheque to the family of Gajendra Singh, the farmer who died at the AAP rally on Wednesday. Speaking to the family member, Sanjay Singh extended his condolences and said that the party shared in the family's grief. 

Additionally, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal also spoke to the family members by phone and personally apologised to them for the incident. Earlier in the day, admitting his fault, Kejriwal apologised and said that the incident had rattled him and he couldn't sleep at night.

17:42   Mumbai model rape: Cops in police custody till April 29
After three cops were arrested for allegedly raping a model inside a police in Mumbai, they have been sent to police custody till April 29 for further questioning and investigations. 

The woman allegedly fled the city after being allegedly raped on April 4. She finally sent a text message to Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria on Tuesday, alleging that she had been raped by some men inside a police station.

16:51   Al Qaeda planned to target Vatican?
People being investigated in a counter-terrorism investigation in Italy may have been planning an attack against the Vatican, one of the prosecutors leading the probe said.

Cagliari Chief Prosecutor Mauro Mura told reporters that as well as planning to launch attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan, as earlier reported, the suspects may also have been aiming to target the Vatican. 

Police conducted raids across Italy, targeting 18 people suspected of links with Al Qaeda. Some were arrested, including the group's suspected spiritual leader, but others were believed to have left the country.

In a significant step towards the welfare of the transgender community, the Rajya Sabha unanimously passed a private member's bill to protect the rights of the community. The private member bill provides for the formulation and implementation of a comprehensive national policy to ensure overall development and welfare of transgenders by the State. The bill, moved by DMK member Tiruchi Siva, is the first private members bill to be passed in 46 years. The bill will now go to Lok Sabha where it will be debated and put to vote.

The post mortem report of farmer Gajendra Singhsays that he died from hanging, the Delhi Police confirmed on Friday.

"As per preliminary finding from post mortem report, death is due to hanging," Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi told the media.

He also said that Delhi Police is a part of the government and there was no infighting with anyone.

15:15   Everybody Love Raymond actor Sawyer Sweeten dies aged 19
The actor Sawyer Sweeten, who made his name as a child star in the comedy 'Everybody Loves Raymond', has died aged 19.

Sweeten, who starred on the programme with his twin brother Sullivan and their elder sister Madylin, now aged 23, died by suicide on Thursday while visiting family in Texas.Born in Brownwood, Texas.

Sweeten began his career in 1996 at the tender age of 18 months when he and Sullivan were cast on Everybody Loves Raymond as the titular character's children, Geoffrey and Michael Barone.

15:03   Farmer's family rejects Kejriwal's apology, demands CBI probe
The family of Rajasthan farmer Gajendra Singh today rejected the apology by Arvind Kejriwal for continuing with the AAP rally in Delhi, while the farmer hanged himself to death and demanded a CBI probe into the incident.        

"What will happen now after this apology? My brother has died. Kejriwal did not stop the rally for even two minutes after the incident," the farmer's sister Rekha told reporters in Nangal Jhamarwada village in Dausa.

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has vowed to protect Saudi Arabia's "territorial integrity" and said his country would not remain a bystander against efforts to destabilise the oil-rich Gulf Kingdom. 

Sharif, who travelled to Saudi Arabia with a powerful delegation including army chief General Raheel Sharif and Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, met King Salman and other top government officials yesterday during his day-long trip.

14:50   2.1 million cases of tuberculosis in India annually
The incidence of tuberculosis disease in India is around 2.1 million cases annually as per the latest World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates, the Lok Sabha was informed today. 

"It is estimated that around 40 per cent of Indian population is infected with Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes TB in human beings, but the vast majority of them have latent TB infection rather than TB Disease," Health Minister J P Nadda said in a written reply.

A strong 5.9-magnitude earthquake rattled New Zealand today, seismologists said, panicking shoppers but prompting no reports of any major damage. 

The quake hit at 3:36 pm (local time) with its epicentre about 66 kilometres (41 miles) from the South Island town of Kaikoura at a depth of 55 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

12:25   Aviation expert claims he has located the wreckage of flight MH370
An aviation technology expert has reportedly claimed that he has spotted the remains of missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 in the ocean between Malaysia and India.

Andre Milne, who has been investigating the case independently since the flight disappeared in March last year, has said that he located the wreckage in the ocean between Malaysia and India, reported The Mirror.

He insisted that the debris in the Bay of Bengal must be probed and said he needs 1.3 million to find it.

Minutes before he hanged himself from a tree at an Aam Aadmi Party rally in NewDelhi Wednesday to set off a political furore, Gajendra Singh got a call from his younger sister Rekha Kanwar. 

He sounded cheerful and told Rekha he would be with her in Jaipur by evening.

"One couldn't hear him properly because there was cheering, shouting in the background. He said he was at a public rally and promised to return by evening. He said he was carrying Rs 1.5 lakh he had earned from a contract for safa-tying at a Delhi wedding.  We were planning to buy furniture, clothes and gifts for our niece whose wedding had been fixed for April 27,' Rekha told The Indian Express.

The Congress party on Friday accused the Aam Aadmi Party of 'insensitiveness' with respect to the farmer Gajendra Singh's death, alleging that the Arvind Kejriwal -led party was shifting blame of his suicide on to others.

"It is so unfortunate that such an incident happened in the very rally where the Chief Minister, his entire cabinet and a number of policemen and a number of supporters were present and the AAP rally continued. And now he blames the media for it. The other day, he blamed the policemen for it. 

The most unfortunate part was the insensitive remarks from the AAP leaders, blaming others but not willing to take the onus," Congress leader Shobha Oza told ANI.

Two days after a farmer hanged himself at his rally in Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal today apologised for not stopping his speech and said, "I apologise if I hurt anyone."

Kejriwal, who has been widely criticized over the past two days, said: "I think I should not have made a speech at that time."

Gajendra Singh, a 42-year-old farmer from Rajasthan, climbed a tree and hanged himself after a 25-minute drama during which no AAP volunteer or policeman was seen stopping him.

Three policemen are among six arrested for allegedly raping a 29-year-old model inside a police chowki (post) in Sakinaka in the western part of Mumbai. 

The cops - two assistant police inspectors and a constable - also allegedly extorted Rs. 4.5 lakh from the woman.

The incident came to light after the woman, who had allegedly fled the city fearing harassment, finally complained to Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria on Tuesday.

A year after ISIS became a household name in America, using brutality and savvy propaganda to challenge al Qaeda and its affiliates for jihadist adherents, U.S. prosecutions of would-be recruits have exploded.

The flurry of arrests -- at least 25 people have been detained since January -- is a sign that complicated, manpower-intensive investigations begun when ISIS started seizing swaths of territory a year ago are finally being completed.

But they also highlight the unique challenges that ISIS poses in comparison with al Qaeda, which has attracted fewer U.S.-based recruits.

Like a new rock band storming the music charts, ISIS has benefited from a media environment that amplifies its propaganda, law enforcement officials said. The group quickly reached early recruits through videos that showcased the fear its adherents instilled in nonbelievers.

Nigerian troops were forced to retreat from Boko Haram's Sambisa Forest stronghold in the restive northeast after a landmine blast killed one soldier and three vigilantes, security sources said today.

Military top brass said yesterday that soldiers were conducting offensives "in some forest locations" in the area after it was announced last week that operations were imminent.

The Sambisa Forest is located in the state of Borno, some 80 kilometres (50 miles) from the town of Chibok, from where more than 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped in April last year.

It has been claimed the 219 schoolgirls still being held were initially kept in the former game reserve, although others have said they may have been split up and moved to Chad or Cameroon.

Defence spokesman Chris Olukolade said in a statement that a senior Boko Haram commander was killed, as well as a number of militants who attacked a patrol. 

"The operations especially in forest locations are progressing in defiance of obstacles and landmines emplaced by the terrorists," he added.

The White House announced Thursday that Adam Gadahn, 36, was killed in January in a US government counter-terrorism operation. 

Neither he nor Ahmed Farouq -- another US citizen and Al Qaeda operative who died in what the White House said was "likely a separate" operation -- was specifically targeted, according to the statement.

Warren Weinstein, a US citizen who was abducted by Al Qaeda in Pakistan in 2011, died along with another hostage, Italian Giovanni Lo Porto, in the attack that killed Farouq, according to the White House.

CNN reports, former CIA Director David Petraeus was sentenced to two years probation and ordered to pay a $100,000 fine after admitting to showing classified information to his biographer, acting US Attorney Jill Westmoreland said in a statement. 

"Former CIA Director David Petraeus was sentenced to two years probation and ordered to pay a $100,000 fine after admitting to showing classified information to his biographer, acting U.S. Attorney Jill Westmore land said in a statement. 

"I want to take this opportunity to apologise for the pain my actions have caused," Gen. Petraeus said before being sentenced. 

Petraeus resigned in November 2012 as director of the Central Intelligence Agency after a romantic relationship with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, became public. Petraeus previously oversaw operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and at one time was touted as a potential presidential candidate.

One of the youngest suspects yet has been arrested on terror-related charges in England.

A 14-year-old boy was taken into custody after encouraging an attack on an Australian parade honoring the war dead and urging the beheading of "someone in Australia," Deborah Walsh, deputy head of counter terrorism at the Crown Prosecution Service, said in a statement Thursday.

The teenager was taken into custody April 2 after UK's Greater Manchester police examined electronic devices and discovered communications between the teen and a man in Australia, police said in a statement.

The teenager, arrested in Blackburn, Lancashire, was not named "because of legal reasons," the statement said. He was charged with two counts of inciting another person to commit an act of terrorism overseas and will appear in Westminster Magistrate's Court on Friday.

During an interview promoting the upcoming "Avengers: Age of Ultron," Downey walked out on Britain's Channel 4 reporter Krishnan Guru-Murthy after the anchor pressed the actor on quotes from Downey's past.

"Are we promoting a movie?" Downey visibly uncomfortable asked Guru-Murthy.

This led to Downey cutting the interview short saying to Guru-Murthy on his way out, "You seem okay. It's just getting a little Diane Sawyer in here."

The line of questioning that led to Downey's walk-out regarded a 2008 interview with the New York Times in which Downey was quoted as saying, "You can't go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal."

The convoy of armored personnel carriers rolled through the empty city streets. The soldiers were heading back to their barracks after a late-night deployment in one of the city's most dangerous neighborhoods.

The target: Jeppestown hostel, where just days before armed residents, mostly Zulus, torched cars and looted foreign-owned shops, promising to drive out their immigrant neighbors.

"We've identified a number of hot spots where we'll be running numerous policing operations supported by the South African defense forces," National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega told CNN as operations at the hostel began Tuesday night.

00:26   Teenage UK boy charged for alleged Australia terror plot
British authorities today charged a 14-year-old boy with terrorism offenses in connection with an alleged plot to attack a war memorial ceremony in Australia.

The Crown Prosecution Service said the boy, who has not been named for legal reasons, allegedly incited another person to carry out an attack at a Veterans' Day parade in Australia with the aim of killing or causing serious injury to people.

The boy is also alleged to have incited someone to carry out a beheading in Australia.

The boy was charged with two offenses of inciting terrorism overseas and is due to appear in a London court tomorrow.

Police said the boy was arrested on April 2 after officers discovered communications between him and a man in Australia.

Five Australian teenagers were arrested on Saturday on suspicion of plotting an Islamic State group-inspired attack at an ANZAC Day ceremony in Melbourne.

Police said evidence suggested that the plot involved attacking police officers.

Saudi airstrikes over Yemen have resumed once again, two days after Saudi Arabia announced the end of its air campaign.

The airstrikes Thursday targeted rebel Houthi militant positions in three parts of Sanaa, two Yemeni Defense Ministry officials said. The attacks lasted four hours.

The strikes caused no casualties, but did destroy all three military compounds that were targeted, the officials said.
