21:50   US: Russians hacked White House
Russian hackers behind the damaging cyber intrusion of the State Department in recent months used that perch to penetrate sensitive parts of the White House computer system, according to U.S. officials briefed on the investigation.

While the White House has said the breach only affected an unclassified system, that description belies the seriousness of the intrusion. The hackers had access to sensitive information such as real-time non-public details of the president's schedule. While such information is not classified, it is still highly sensitive and prized by foreign intelligence agencies, U.S. officials say.

The White House in October said it noticed suspicious activity in the unclassified network that serves the executive office of the president. The system has been shut down periodically to allow for security upgrades.

19:12   Cong seeks V K Singh's dismissal
Congress today demanded immediate sacking of Union Minister V K Singh for his controversial "presstitutes" remarks against newsmen and targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not taking any action against him.

"We are not going to rest till the demand is met. He should be sacked immediately. This is a highly condemnable remark against the media, which is the fourth pillar of democracy," Congress spokesperson Khushboo said at the AICC briefing.

Asked what the party would do if Singh was not removed, she said, "We will first wait to see what action is being taken." Khushboo said what is lamentable is that the Modi government and the BJP is full of ministers and leaders and MPs ranging from Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti to Giriraj Singh and Sakshi Maharaj, known for making controversial remarks.

Singh came under attack from several Congress leaders who slammed the Minister of State for External Affairs over his remarks.

Singh's "statement shows utter intolerance and incapacity to hear any kind of criticism or dissent", the Indian National Congress said on its Twitter handle, quoting its spokesman Abhishek Singhvi.

19:06   AP govt justifies action against sandalwood 'smugglers'
The Andhra Pradesh government today justified police firing at red sanders "smugglers" in Chittoor district, in which 20 people, mostly from Tamil Nadu, were killed, saying it was done in self-defence.

"It was an incident where the police had to open fire in self-defence because they were terribly outnumbered," Government's Communication Advisor, Parakala Prabhakar, said.

Twenty people were gunned down yesterday in a police operation said to be against Red Sanders smugglers that came under severe attack from the government and political parties in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, which claimed that many victims were labourers from their state.

He said a small combing party of 10-15 personnel were encircled by more than 200 smugglers who were "moving menacingly" towards them.

"In the past, police officials were axed to death, hacked to death. So, in self-defence, police had to open fire," Prabhakar said.

The state had lost six police officers (attacked by red sanders smugglers) while on duty during combing operations in the last few years, he said.

"More than 1000 (red sanders smugglers) are in jail which means wherever possible we have apprehended them and put them in jail. 4500 cases have been registered (against red sanders smugglers) and 6000 vehicles (belonging to smugglers) have been seized," Prabhakar said.

"So, we are not a trigger-happy police force. It was only in self-defence, they had to do."

Asked about reports that the "smugglers" did not have fire-arms, Prabhakar said last time also they had killed police and forest officers with axes and sickles. "So, weapon does not mean fire-arm. They could kill without fire-arm. They did it earlier".

18:24   Criticise, but don't say we are dictatorial: Maha minister on Shobhaa De
Cultural affairs minister Vinod Tawde on the Marathi film mandate for multiplexes: "I have taken a decision in favor of Marathi cinema and viewers. Everyone has a right to criticize, so I don't feel bad if anybody tweets against me or my decision. If someone doesn't agree then there are ways to challenge the decision, they can discuss and convince me. But saying that this decision is dictatorial... I think people have elected us and we are taking this decision for good."

Tawde alludes to columnist Shobhaa De's tweet regarding the Maharashtra government's decision to make it mandatory for multiplexes to screen Marathi films during the prime time slot.

Sena legislator Pratap Sarnaik, through point of propriety, in the legislative assembly said that the novelist had hurt the sentiments of the house which had whole-heartedly welcomed culture minister Vinod Tawde's announcement. A breach of privilege motion was filed against De today.

17:26   No right-minded Kashmiri will support ghettoisation of Pandits: Omar
Former J-K CM Omar Abdullah on the Modi government's proposal for 'composite townships' for Kashmiri Pandits.

Abdullah says, "No right-minded Kashmiri will oppose the return of Kashmiri Pandits to their homes in the valley.

"No right-minded Kashmiri will support the ghettoisation of Kashmiri Pandits, housed in segregated inherently unsafe camps in the valley.

"I very much doubt very many Kashmiri Pandits would like to return to the valley just to be housed in ghettos, segregated and isolated. I will do everything possible to support the return of Pandits to the valley in keeping with our composite culture and Kashmiriyat."

A row has erupted over the J-K government's plan to create "composite townships" for displaced Kashmiri pandits in the valley. The government's move has been met with strong opposition from several parties and separatists in the state.

While the National Conference said the move will be dangerous for integrity of state and country, separatist leader Yasin Malik said a separate colony on the basis of religion will only build walls of hate, like in Israel.

J&K chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed during his meeting with Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Monday had assured that the state government will acquire and provide land at the earliest for composite townships for displaced Kashmiri pandit migrants in the valley.
