23:36   Yemen crisis: Red Cross calls for 24-hour ceasefire
The Red Cross has called for a 24-hour ceasefire in Yemen to bring in desperately needed medical supplies after fierce fighting. It says medical teams and rescuers must access Aden, a stronghold of those loyal to President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, or more civilians will die. Fighting in the southern port city has intensified with Saudi-led airstrikes aiming to push back Shia Houthi rebels. Russia, too, has called at the United Nations for a truce.

Somali militants vowed to wage a long war against Kenya and run its cities "red with blood" after the group's fighters killed nearly 150 people during an assault on a Kenyan university. Kenyan officials said they had arrested five men in connection with Thursday's attack by Al Shabab gunmen at Garissa university. In a message directed at the Kenyan public, the Al Qaeda-aligned group said the raid was revenge for Kenya's military presence in Somalia and mistreatment of Muslims within Kenya.

After being rescued from war-torn Yemen, another batch of Indians landed in Kochi airport. The situation has worsened with the rebels closing in on Aden port. Today, over 800 Indians have been rescued by the Indian Navy.

21:36   France halts search for bodies at Germanwings crash site
French investigators have ended their search for bodies in the Alps where a Germanwings passenger jet crashed last month, killing all 150 people on board, a local official said. "The search for bodies is over, but the search for the victims' personal belongings is continuing," said a spokesman for the local government authority in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region. The identification of victims will now continue through the analysis of 150 sets of DNA found at site, which could take several weeks.

37 Indian fishermen remanded in judicial custody till April 17 in Sri Lanka for allegedly poaching in the country's waters. In the recent times, the fishermen's issue has become quite acute with Lanka PM saying that the country would not allow Indians in their waters and would even shoot them down if necessary.

To involve workers in various social campaigns initiated by the PM, BJP President Amit Shah has formed nine separate committees of senior leaders. The panels will look after initiatives to help the party such as mass contact programme as well social campaigns like Clean India plan, Namami Ganga and 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao'.

19:54   Wanted to raise concern about secularism: Judge who skipped PM's dinner
Supreme Court Judge Justice Kurian Joseph, who has raised objections with Chief Justice of India H L Dattu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over holding of a three-day long judges conference during holy weekend for Christians, said he only wanted to raise the "serious concern" about secularism in India. 

"I only wanted to raise the serious concern -- the future of secularism in this great country -- which required consideration of appropriate authorities. Nothing personal between me or anybody (on this issue). But I am sad that it has been projected wrongly by a section of media, missing the core issue," he said.

Justice Joseph has declined to attend the PM's dinner for top judges on the ground that the event and the ongoing judges' conference clashed with Good Friday and Easter weekend.

19:32   5 suspects held in Kenya university attack
Five people are in custody following the Al Shabab attack in eastern Kenya on Thursday which left almost 150 people dead, officials say. Some suspects were arrested while trying to flee to neighbouring Somalia, the internal security ministry said. One is said to be a security guard. At least 148 people died when gunmen attacked Garissa university campus. Four of the gunmen were also killed.

As a woman, it is not uncommon to meet other women who when asked what they do will describe themselves as scientists, bankers, bureaucrats, doctors, teachers, activists, but will always slow down towards the end, hit a pause button on all those achievements, and softly moan: "but I am a mother first" with a strange mix of naivety and affectation. I call this a 'mother-first' syndrome. 

Sonia seems to have fallen prey to the mother-first syndrome. Sonia sans Rahul is an independent minded, seasoned politician but Sonia with Rahul is definitely a mother-first.

18:28   OP Chautala gets parole for a month in teachers' recruitment scam
Former Haryana Chief Minister OP Chautala, serving a decade-long jail term by the Delhi high court recently in a teachers' recruitment scam case, was granted a month's parole by the Delhi government.

Lt Governor Najeeb Jung granted the relief to Chautala to enable him prepare his appeal against the high court's March 5 judgment upholding the conviction and ten years sentence awarded to him by a trial court.

18:18   The importance of net neutrality
Should the Internet be touched? That's one way to summarise the 20 questions the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has asked the public in a recent consultation paper. Most questions pertain to whether the hitherto unregulated over-the-top services, typically apps such as Skype and Facebook that ride on telecom networks, need regulation. 

Views have also been sought regarding net neutrality, the principle of data equality that has over the years ensured the Internet remained a level playing ground. TRAI will eventually take a call on whether India has to change its approach to Internet regulation. 

But isn't the Internet perfect the way it is? Apparently not. At least that is what telecom companies believe.

18:11   India evacuates stranded nationals from Yemen amidst heavy shelling
Even as the Indian government continues to evacuate stranded Indians from Yemen from the port of Aden, the processes were hampered today owing to heavy shelling. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted, "There is heavy shelling in Aden.The ship is anchored 5-6 km off the coast. Indian nationals are being taken by boat to board the ship there." Navy officials said that rescue operations had become difficult as Huthi tribals had closed in on Aden port.

West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi was sworn in as Mizoram governor at the Raj Bhavan. Tripathi was sworn in by Gauhati High Court JudgeJustice Miachael Zothankhuma. The swearing in ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, his cabinet colleagues, legislators and senior government officials. Tripathi was appointed to take additional charge of Mizoram after state governor Aziz Qureshi was sacked by the Centre on March 28.

17:21   3 army troopers dead after avalanche hits convoy in Ladakh
Three army troopers have died and one is wounded after an avalanche hit a convoy in the cold desert region of Ladakh. A senior police officer said two troopers are still missing and a rescue operation is on in the area. The official added that the avalanche hit three army vehicles near the Changla pass in Leh district of Ladakh late Friday evening.

16:14   LK Advani refuses to speak at BJP's national executive meet
For only the second time since the BJP was born 35 years ago, LK Advani will not deliver his traditional valedictory address at the party's national executive meeting. 

He has turned down party president Amit Shah's request to speak today, the second day of the BJP's Bengaluru conclave.

While Advani's refusal to make a speech is seen as a signal of his deep disillusionment, sources said top leaders were also wary of what the sidelined 87-year-old would say.

15:53   21 lifters test positive, provisionally suspended by IWF
In what could be termed as one of the biggest doping scandals in recent years, as many as 21 weightlifters have been provisionally suspended by the Indian Weightlifting Federation after testing positive for banned substances. 

The lifters tested positive across different championships -- both out-of-competition and in-competition. But the maximum numbers of offenders were caught at the National Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships, which was held in Yamunanagar in January.

15:28   PM Modi for larger health warnings on cigarette packets?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly asked Health Minister JP Nadda to go ahead with enforcing larger pictorial warnings on cigarette packets after a parliamentary committee said the move should be delayed because there is no local evidence that smoking causes cancer.

The PM, sources said, wants to send a clear message that his government is not caving under pressure from the tobacco lobby. The government is likely to ask for health warnings that cover 60-65 percent of a cigarette packet. 

Last year, the Health Minister had said starting April 1, 85 percent of packaging would carry a depiction of the damage done by smoking.

13:04   SC judge to skip PM's dinner, says 'show equal respect to all sacred days'
A Supreme Court judge, who had earlier objected to a judges' conference being held on Good Friday, has declined a dinner invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that he will be in Kerala for religious ceremonies.

In his letter written on April 1, Justice Joseph Kurian sought to draw Modi's attention by saying, "that no important programmes are held during sacred and auspicious days... though we have holidays during that period as well."

As many as 33 Indian fishermen were arrested by Sri Lankan navy for allegedly poaching in the country's waters near Neduntheevu, officials said today. 

The SL navy personnel arrested 33 fishermen belonging to Nagapattinam district when they were fishing near Neduntheevu in Sri Lankan waters last night, Fisheries Department sources said.

11:59   Body of missing Indian mountaineer found in Andes
The body of Malli Masthan Babu, the Indian mountaineer who went missing in the Andes mountain ranges in Chile, South America, was found by helicopter search teams, his family sources said in Nellore on Saturday.

He has been missing in the mountains since March 24, when three other members of his expedition returned due to hostile weather conditions following heavy rains and gales.

11:44   Judge orders Facebook and Zuckerberg to turn over documents
Facebook and its founder must release documents and electronic correspondence to a defence lawyer whose client has fled from criminal charges that he falsely claimed a majority ownership in the social media giant, a federal judge said. 

US District Judge Vernon Broderick yesterday ordered Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg to relinquish documents by Monday that were requested by Paul Ceglia's lawyer, Robert Ross Fogg.

India-born ex-Goldman Sachs director Rajat Gupta's conviction on insider trading charges should not be thrown out as the government provided "overwhelming" proof against him for passing on illegal information in return for "expected potential pecuniary gains," US prosecutors said. 

The prosecutors said the IIT and Harvard-educated former McKinsey head, who is serving a two-year sentence, had a "powerful" financial incentive to tip his billionaire hedge-fund operator friend Raj Rajaratnam.

Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Saturday said the administration will find out if the camera spotted by Union Minister Smriti Irani in the "Fabindia" trail room, was an intentional act or not.

"It's a very unfortunate incident. We have to find out if the act that happened is intentional, purposeful or unknowingly because such cameras are often displayed in shops," said Parsekar.

10:52   J&K highway closed for 4th day; over 600 passengers stranded
The 300-km long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for traffic for the fourth consecutive day today due to landslides triggered by heavy rains, leaving over 600 Kashmir-bound passengers are stranded. 

Authorities have not allowed any fresh movement of traffic from Jammu to Srinagar or from the other side, SSP Traffic, National Highway, Sanjay Kotwal said.

10:39   Gun-control activist and widow of James Brady dies at 73
Sarah Kemp Brady, who became an activist for gun control after her husband was shot in the head in the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, has died. 

Brady, 73, died yesterday in a retirement community in Alexandria, Virginia, after battling pneumonia, family members said in an email. Brady's husband, former White House Press Secretary James Brady, died Aug 4, also at the age of 73.

South Korean military officials have said that North Korea test-fired four short-range missiles off its west coast into the sea.

According to BBC, the missiles had a range of about 140km, said the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).The statement said that the missiles were fired from Dongchang-ri in the north of the country on Friday afternoon.

US President Barack Obama called Kenya's leader and vowed to stand "hand-in-hand" with its government and people, as they reel from an Islamist attack that killed 148 university students and security officers. 

"Words cannot adequately condemn the terrorist atrocities that took place at Garissa University College, where innocent men and women were brazenly and brutally massacred," Obama said yesterday.

A woman has been arrested on charges she tried to join and martyr herself for the Islamic State group, a day after two women in New York were charged with plotting to wage jihad by building a bomb and using it for a Boston Marathon-type attack. 

Keonna Thomas, 30, was preparing to fly to Spain with hopes of reaching Syria to fight with the terror group, authorities said.

09:17   UN Security Council to discuss pause in air strikes on Yemen
The UN Security Council will meet today to discuss a Russian proposal for humanitarian pauses in the Saudi-led air campaign in Yemen, diplomats said. 

Russia called for the meeting of the 15-member council amid growing alarm over the rising civilian death toll from the fighting in Yemen. 

UN aid chief Valerie Amos said Thursday she was "extremely concerned" about the fate of civilians trapped in fierce fighting after aid agencies reported that 519 people had been killed and nearly 1,700 injured in two weeks.

09:17   US condemns civilian attacks in latest Syria violence
The United States has condemned the latest wave of violence in Syria which has left dozens of civilians dead and displaced thousands more. 

Fierce fighting between forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and Islamist rebels, including the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra front in Idlib city, had reportedly left more than 100 civilians dead and forced 30,000 people to flee.
