21:54   Modi @ UN: Pakistan must create atmosphere for talks
Modi @ UN

Raising issues in UN is not the way to make progress towards resolving issues between our two countries.

I am prepared to engage in a serious bilateral dialogue with Pakistan in a peaceful atmosphere, without the shadow of terrorism.

In a world we are not united as nations.

Terrorism is taking new shape and new name.

We should think why despite the UN, we are making so many 'G' forums

PM says it is important to expand the UN Security Council

We should put aside our differences and mount a concerted effort to combat terrorism. I urge you to adopt the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism

When we craft agreements on international trade we should accommodate each other's concerns and interests

18:46   TN: Bus service hit but trains continue to ply
A correspondent in Tirunelveli:

For local travel, Tamil Nadu has a very good bus service but a very poor railway service. But today when the bus service in the state has been paralysed trains continue to ply both in Chennai and in rural Tamil Nadu.

Even little known stations like Kurumbur on the Tirunelveli - Thiruchendur line was crowded with more than a hundred passengers. Normally you will see less than ten people on this station.

Although shops have shut down across the state, restaurants, tea shops, vegetable shops and flower shops continue to do business with half their shutters down. Shops selling perishables are hoping to sell their stocks before closing down. Bewildered people can be seen at various bus stops not knowing what to do.  Private buses have gone off the road along with the state transport.

A sombre looking Modi placed yellow rose buds on the memorial at 'ground zero' and folded his hands. The prime minister was accompanied by India's Ambassador to the US S Jaishankar and other officials.

A correspondent reports: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's signature lifestyle is creating waves in the traveling Indian delegation.

Ever since the 70-plus strong delegation left India with Modi, nobody is being served chicken and mutton or even fish, which some foodies consider almost vegetarian.

Punjabi hacks in PM's entourage are aghast to be served in 15-degree cold dhoklas, sabudana and poha for breakfast.    Some officers have even found the regular chole-kulchas sugary.

The lunches and dinners are regular Indian and strict vegetarians, but nobody dares to 'bell the cat'.

Many Indian houses since centuries  have been traditionally non-vegetarian. But the PM's visit is serving them cold dhkolas. Too bad.

Criticising Nawaz Sharif for raising the Kashmir issue in UN, Congress today said his speech had "imprints" of Pakistani military hawks as the Prime Minister and his government were "under siege" in Islamabad.

Underlining that Sharif's speech had imprints of Pakistani military hawks, Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma said his raising the Kashmir at the UN deserves to be condemned.

"It is unbecoming of a prime minister to use an international forum to rake up issues which in fact concern only Pakistan and India," he said. Sharma, a former Union Minister, said it is clear that there is "signature, the imprint of hawks of Pakistan establishment, the military establishment on Nawaz Sharif's statement because he himself, his government is under siege". Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of country and it is not an issue which is negotiable, he said.
