16:28   Anti-Sikh riots: SC upholds life sentence of four
The Supreme Court also upheld the life sentence awarded to four persons for burning two men to death during 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

A bench of justices P Sathasivam and M Y Eqbal turned down the plea of the convicts that they could not be held guilty of murder as the body was not recovered by the Delhi police and there was delay in lodging FIR in the case.

"It is well-settled that discovery of dead body of the victim has never been considered as the only mode of proving the corpus delicti (evidence) in murder.

"In fact, there are many cases of such nature like the present one where the discovery of dead body is impossible, specially when members of a particular community were murdered in such a violent mob attack on Sikh community in different places and offenders tried to remove the dead bodies and also looted articles," it said.

16:25   Court REOPENS '84 riots case against Jagdish Tytler
A Delhi court has ordered the re-opening of  a 1984 riots case against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had earlier given a clean chit to Tytler in 2007 and in 2009 claiming there was no evidence against him.

However, challenging the closure report filed by the CBI in 2009, Lakhwinder Kaur, whose husband was killed in the riots, argued that the investigating agency had not recorded the testimonies of two key eyewitnesses who have since the riots moved to the United States.

During the arguments on April 4, the CBI prosecutor had sought the dismissal of the plea filed by the victim saying the probe has made it clear that Tytler was not present on November 1, 1984 at Gurudwara Pulbangash in North Delhi where three people were killed during the riots.

The prosecutor said at the time of the incident, Tytler was at Teen Murti Bhawan, the residence of the then late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Tytler was among the three prominent leaders named in the reports on anti-Sikh riots. Two other leaders named were Sajjan Kumar and the late HKL Bhagat.

12:04   SC asks UP govt: Why was 10-yr-old girl detained?
The Supreme Court takes suo motu cognisance of a media report about detention of a 10-year-old girl by police in Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh. The SC issues notice to UP government seeking its response by Monday.

"It was a misunderstanding", is the rather incredulous explanation offered by cops for why a 10-year-old alleged rape survivor was held inside police lockup for over 10 hours in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr.

The incident, that has sparked shock and outrage, happened inside a women's police station on Sunday night when the girl's distraught mother told the cops that a 24-year-old local villager had sexually assaulted her child. Instead of taking action, the women cops allegedly abused the mother and forced her to leave, putting the little girl behind bars for the entire night. Video footage of the incident filmed and circulated by a local journalist later resulted in the release of the girl on Monday. Read the full story here

10:00   Court to give verdict on re-opening 1984 riots case
It is a crucial day for former Congress MP Jagdish Tytler as a Delhi court will decide whether to re-open a 1984 riots case against him.

Tytler is accused of instigating a mob that led to the murder of three men who had taken shelter at a gurudwara in the capital on November 1, 1984.

During the arguments, CBI prosecutor Sanjay Kumar sought dismissal of the plea filed by the victim, Lakhwinder Kaur saying the probe has made it clear that Tytler was not present on November 1, 1984 at Gurudwara Pulbangash in North Delhi where three people were killed during the riots.

The prosecutor said at the time of the incident, Tytler was at Teen Murti Bhawan, the residence of the then late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

"The CBI has already re-investigated the case on the order of trial court but there was no sufficient evidence against Tytler," the prosecutor said.

08:44   Imran has had a dream, he believes it will come true
After languishing on the margins for almost 16 years, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf has now taken centre stage in Pakistani power politics, challenging the two established parties. But will Imran's dream of sweeping the elections come true? Maybe not yet.

Certainly, the PTI has gained momentum, especially with the growing sense of despair among the new generation of Pakistanis.

A British Council survey shows that an overwhelming percentage of the countrys young population has little faith in the future of the country and democracy.

Though Imran Khan's slogans of 'a new Pakistan' and 'change we can bring' may have inspired the dissatisfied urban educated youth, they have not generated the kind of powerful mass effect needed to break the domination of the traditional power elite.

Moreover, his message is confused and often contradictory offering little to the common people.
