22:41   Being a politican was not Pranab's aim in life
Pranab Mukherjee, who became President after a political career spanning five decades, today said being an active politician had not been his aim in life and he wanted to be a teacher.

"My father Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee was an active political leader and a freedom fighter. From a young age I was interested in political developments. But I did not want to join active politics, rather I wanted to be a teacher," Mukherjee said. He was answering questions from students at Kirnahar Shib Chandra High School in Birbhum district, where he studied from Class V to XI and matriculated in 1952. While recalling the first day he stepped into the school, a nostalgic Mukherjee said it was also smaller then and had only two buildings. "Today I am remembering those days," he said.

Mukherjee who was given a felicitation there recalled that the teachers were strict and on his first day he was quite afraid. He was to give replies to 13 questions from students, but could accommodate only four because of lack of time.

Mukherjee told the students that those who could not question him, should not feel disheartened and asked them to send the queries to him, which he would answer. He was also to meet two or three school friends, who were present, but could not.

The President later went around a permanent gallery at the school on his life and times. It came up two years ago.

The BBC faced growing fallout today over sexual abuse allegations against a popular children's TV entertainer, as Prime Minister David Cameron accused the broadcaster of changing its story about why it killed a news segment on the accusations.

The scandal is one of the worst to rock the BBC, long a key player in British public life and often cited as one of the most trusted sources of accurate, unbiased information.

Veteran BBC foreign editor John Simpson explained in an interview to be aired on Monday that the scandal had left the broadcaster in a "very dangerous" position.

The BBC is fending off reports that it pulled an investigation into Savile's behaviour because it would have clashed with tribute programmes to the entertainer, who died last year aged 84.

The suspension of Kingfisher Airline's licence means fewer seats in the market and in the coming festival and holiday season, other airlines, especially the low-cost carriers, have taken advantage of the situation. Industry sources say fares may go up by as much as 10% from November onwards.

"The coming months would see fares rise slightly as it is the holiday season. But if one is to consider the impact of KFA's withdrawal from the market, airlines like Jet and Air India will not really benefit from the situation as their fares are already in the higher bracket. The low cost carriers will then have a window to increase fares," said an aviation expert. Sources also say that southern routes are more likely to see the fare hike where Kingfisher had been more active.

"Routes like Mumbai-Bangalore, Bangalore-Chennai, Bangalore-Goa etc should see a significant fare hike as other routes are already well covered by the major airlines," said a private airline official. Read

11:51   Dilip Kumar, Bachchan, SRK among biggies at hospital
Several Bollywood bigwigs, including superstars such as Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan turned up to pay their last respects to veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra, known as the country's king of celluloid romance.   Chopra died at Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital. He was 80 years old.

According to a Yash Raj Films spokesperson, the director died in the evening after a week long hospitalisation in which he received treatment for suspected dengue fever.

Later his body was taken from the hospital to the premises of the Yash Raj Studios, which was set up by Yash Chopra. This venue became one of the biggest film production houses in Bollywood.

"We have stayed together with each other. I was shocked by the news,' said veteran Hindi movies director Ramesh Sippy.   Movie director Madhur Bhandarkar said that his death has come as a shock.

He was also astonished at the outbreak of dengue that had caused the demise of Yash Chopra.

"A few days ago news had come in that he was recovering and he would be back to work. Everyone was waiting for his film to release. It has been quite shocking for all of us," said Madhur Bhandarkar.

Born in 1932 at Lahore, now in Pakistan, Yash Chopra was favoured by leading Indian actors with his movies seen as a sure-fire way to become a hit with audiences.

The filmmaker proved his mettle with intensely emotional and tragic movies, many of which went on to become box-office blockbusters.   His career spanned five decades, and at an event marking his 80th birthday last month, Chopra narrated how he came to Mumbai with 200 rupees in his pocket, hoping to make it as a film director.

11:03   Why Winter Session of Parl will be cold and stormy
The UPA2 is likely to suffer a setback if the DMK does not contain the infighting between T R Baalu and S S Palanimanickam over a new railway line in Thanjavur.

Insiders in the DMK openly speak of the strategy lined up for the Winter Session. They will revolt against Baalu which will have a reflection on the floor coordination by the UPA2. Interpreting this development, an insider commented that the spat between the DMK minister and the MP will ensure a turbulent Winter Session, if the government needs the 18 votes of DMK. If that happens, there will be absentions and boycotts.

A few DMK MPs have been in constant touch with Sonia Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi as these MPs do not belong to the DMK family. These MPs are worried over the future of DMK as an organisation in the event of a post-Karunanidhi era.

10:57   Do not give mobile phones to girls: BSP MLA
BSP leader Rajpal Saini has stirred a mobile controversy and went a step too far by saying that women and children don't need mobiles.

"There is no need to give phones to women and children. It distracts them and is useless. Why do women need phones? My mother, wife and sister never had mobile phones. They survived without one," said Saini.

However, Mr Saini, while speaking to the media later, said what he meant was that students of a certain age should not be given mobile phones.

"What I am saying is that students should not be given mobile phones. It is the age to study, and mobile phones are a distraction. Due to mobile phones, they lose their way and do not focus on their studies," he said.

In a Taliban-type diktat, a Khap panchayat in Baghpat in July, 2012 had also banned love marriages and barred women below 40 years from going out for shopping and using mobile phones.

09:59   Sensex down 81 pts in opening trade
The BSE benchmark Sensex fell by over 81.43 points in the opening trade on Monday on emergence of profit-booking at higher levels amid weakening Asian trend.

The 30-share index, which had lost 109.62 points in the previous session, fell by 81.43 points, or 0.43 per cent, to 18,600.88 in first five minutes of trading.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange Nifty Index shed 26.20 points, or 0.46 per cent, to 5,758.05.

The Asian markets were down as risk sentiment was dented by lacklustre earnings from leading US companies, and a bigger-than-expected fall in exports from Japan, a key driver of the world's third-biggest economy.

08:55   3 killed, 4 injured in US shooting; suspect dead
Three people were killed and four others injured when a suspected gunman, who was later found dead, opened fire at a spa in a Milwaukee suburb shopping centre in the US state of Wisconsin.

According to local police and federal investigating agencies, the suspect was identified as Radcliffe F Haughton, the 45-year-old husband of a spa worker.

08:53   Fidel Castro appears in public
Fidel Castro has appeared in public for the first time in months, a top hotel executive said, challenging persistent rumours that the ageing revolutionary is near death.

The 86-year-old retired leader dropped off a Venezuelan guest at the Hotel Nacional yesterday afternoon, then stayed to chat with hotel staff, commercial director Yamila Fuster said.

"Fidel Castro was here yesterday, he brought a guest and spoke to workers and hotel leaders for 30 minutes," Fuster told The Associated Press. She said she was not present but that the news was being released officially by the state-owned establishment.

"They told me he looked very good. He was wearing a checked shirt and a hat," she said.

Fuster would not release the name of the Venezuelan guest, but witnesses at the hotel say former Venezuelan Vice President Elias Jaua is staying there. A car with Venezuelan diplomatic plates was parked today outside the hotel, and Cuban officials were seen carrying a photo album similar to ones the government gives as gifts to distinguished guests, normally filled with official pictures.
