An Australian special forces soldier has been killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.

Australian Defense Force Chief David Hurley said the 24-year-old soldier was clearing a compound in the southern province of Uruzgan on yesterday when the improvised explosive device detonated.

He was the 39th Australian soldier killed in the Afghanistan war.

Hurley said on Monday that no other soldiers were hurt or killed in the explosion. He declined to release more details because the special operations mission is still under way.

Australia has 1,550 troops in Afghanistan and is the largest military contributor to the US-led alliance outside NATO.
