Modi makes debut on US TV

Not NaMo ya! But a character named Garrett Modi on the NBC sitcom Sunnyside.

Garrett Modi is played by Kal Penn, the Indian American actor best known for Harold and Kumar and currently appearing on Designated Survivor where he plays a White House official, which he was in real life for a couple of years in the Obama administration.

Kal Penn was born Kalpen Modi, but chose to act under a clever twist of his first name.

When the New York Times asked Kal what his parents thought of using their surname on Sunnyside, Kal said,'My dad was not a fan at first. He said: Thats a terrible idea. People are going to be confused. You used to work in politics. People might think its supposed to be you. But hes come around.'

In the same NYT interview, Kal also revealed that when he was growing up he heard stories about his grandparents marching with Gandhi. That's right: Mahatma Gandhi.
