United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that Chinese President Xi Jinping notified him that his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was a success.

The two leaders held talks in Beijing on Wednesday during Kim's surprise visit to China that reportedly took place from March 25 and 28.

"Received message last night from XI JINPING of China that his meeting with KIM JONG UN went very well and that KIM looks forward to his meeting with me," Trump said in an early morning tweet.

"In the meantime, and unfortunately, maximum sanctions and pressure must be maintained at all cost!" he added.

The United States and the United Nations have imposed tough sanctions on North Korea, owing to its persistent ballistic missile tests last year.

Most recently, Trump slapped new sanctions on North Korea, targeting 56 vessels, shipping companies and trade businesses, of which Chinese firms and personnel are involved.

It is being said that the talks would have largely centred on the situation of the Korean Peninsula and denuclearisation of North Korea.

Trump also mentioned of denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula while highlighting the willingness of Kim to meet him.

"For years and through many administrations, everyone said that peace and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula was not even a small possibility. Now there is a good chance that Kim Jong Un will do what is right for his people and for humanity. Look forward to our meeting!", Trump further said.

An inter-Korean summit is also expected to take place in Late April to discuss the issue of denuclearisation.
