23:41   Cab agreegator suspends peak pricing as rains lash Mumbai

"#Mumbai We have suspended peak pricing in the city. Get home safe," Ola's official handle tweeted with a hashtag #MumbaiRains.

Majority of driver partners of Ola and Uber went on a flash strike in Mumbai on Monday midnight demanding better earnings and security of drivers who were assaulted in the recent past.

23:29   Mumbai rain: Schools, colleges to remain closed tomorrow

All educational institutions in Mumbai will remain closed on Wednesday in the wake of warnings from the weather department that heavy rains will continue to lash the city.

"Schools are instructed to remain close tomorrow for safety due to mixed predictions; This holiday will be compensated in Diwali #MumbaiRains," Maharashtra Education Minister Vinod Tawde tweeted.

"The precautionary holiday will be applicable for schools and colleges in Mumbai Metropolitan Region," Tawde said in another tweet.

Heavy rains coupled with thunder and lightning lashed the metropolis on Tuesday, slowing down movement of vehicular traffic and suburban trains, and bringing back memories of torrential downpour late last month when the financial capital came to a standstill.

As the visibility dropped below 550 metres due to the downpour, runway operations at the Mumbai airport were suspended for a brief period during which some flights were diverted to nearby airports.

With the weather department forecasting more rain, the civic administration and other agencies have geared up to tackle any eventuality and keep the city afloat unlike on August 29, when the metropolis was flooded.

22:45   GST a tectonic shift, takes India closer to 8% plus growth: World Bank
World Bank India chief Junaid Ahmad today described the goods and services tax  as a "tectonic shift" in the country's taxation policy which has increased the possibility of 8 per cent plus growth.

India recorded a growth rate of 7.1 per cent in 2016-17 and 5.7 per cent in the first quarter of the current fiscal.

"Today India is at the brink of a possibility of moving into 8 per cent plus growth rate. Why? Because India has made a very bold step in integrating internally its nation into one market. So the shift into GST is a tectonic shift," Ahmad said at an industry event.

If the GST is implemented efficiently, the growth boost India will get is going to be huge, he said while addressing members of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in New Delhi.

The economic corridors of India will change and that will require change in transportation as well, he added.

"You (India) need systems of transport, particular multi- modal, in order to respond what GST is offering as one market. If GST is implemented efficiently, the growth boost that you will get from internal movements of goods is going to be huge," he said.

21:35   ED summons Rabri Devi in railway hotels corruption case
The Enforcement Directorate has summoned former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi in connection with its money laundering probe in the railway hotels allotment case, officials said today.
Rabri, wife of Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad, has been summoned to be present before the investigating officer of the case on September 26, they said.
The IO is expected to record her statement under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, under which it had registered an FIR against the Lalu Prasad family and others sometime back.

It is understood that this is the second summon by the agency to Rabri after she did not depose before it the first time.
The central probe agency had earlier questioned few people in this case including the wife of former UPA minister P C Gupta.
The Enforcement Directorate had taken cognisance of a Central Bureau of Investigation first information report in this regard to initiate its own criminal complaint.
In July, the CBI had registered a criminal FIR and conducted multiple searches against former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad and others.
The ED will investigate the alleged "proceeds of crime" generated by the accused, purportedly through shell companies, officials said.
Rabri, son Tejashwi Yadav, and others will be probed by the agency under charges filed in the Enforcement Case Information Report, the ED equivalent of a police FIR.
The case dates back to the time when Lalu was the railway minister in the UPA government.
Others named in the CBI FIR include Vijay Kochhar, Vinay Kochhar (both directors of Sujata Hotels), Delight Marketing company, now known as Lara Projects, and the then IRCTC managing director P K Goel.

20:55   Pak should take away Rohingyas: Union Minister Giriraj Singh
Union Minister Giriraj Singh, known for his controversial remarks, today said Pakistan should "take away" Rohingyas as Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar "is fond of them".
Referring to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in Kashmir and the continuing infiltration attempts from across the border, Singh said that India does not have the capacity to bear more "infiltrators", therefore the Rohingya Muslims will have to leave.
The minister reiterated the government's stand that Rohingyas are illegal migrants who pose a threat to India's internal security.
Humanity is not above the law, Singh said, in remarks that come in the backdrop of criticism of the government decision to deport the Rohingyas, who have fled the violence-hit Rakhine state of Myanmar.
"It will be better that Pakistan takes away Rohingya Muslims if Masood Azhar is so fond of them," he said referring to the chief of Pakistan-based militant outfit JeM.
"There are some politicians in India as well who are standing in support of Rohingyas.
"They should also be told to send them (Rohingyas) to Pakistan. If Pakistan's terrorist leader (Azhar) backed by its government is saying this, then the Pakistani government should take them (Rohingyas) away," Singh told reporters on the sidelines of a summit organised by the CII in New Delhi.
The government had told Parliament on August 9 that more than 14,000 Rohingyas are at present staying in India.
However, some inputs indicate that around 40,000 undocumented Rohingyas were staying in India, mostly in Jammu, Hyderabad, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan regions.

20:47   Trai slashes call connect charge to 6 paise/minute
In a move that may result in lower call charges, telecom regulator Trai today slashed the rate paid by an operator for termination of mobile call on a rival network to 6 paise a minute, from the current 14 paise.

Trai said the new call termination charge will be applicable from October 1, 2017, and will be completely eliminated from January 1, 2020.

The cut in the charge runs contrary to the demands made by established operators, including Bharti Airtel, which wanted the termination rate to be raised and benchmarked against the actual cost.

The latest entrant Reliance Jio, on the other hand, had been seeking waiving of the charge, saying it will benefit consumers.

"On the basis of comments received from stakeholders, in writing or during the open house discussion or during the workshop, the Authority has prescribed revised domestic mobile termination charges through these regulations," Trai said in a statement.

20:15   If threatened, US will totally destroy North Korea: Trump
In his first speech at the United Nation General Assembly, United States President Donald Trump warned North Korea that the US will destroy it.

"No one has shown more contempt for its people than the regime in North Korea. If it (the US) threatened, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea," Trump said.

However, later he said that it won't be necessary.

"US is ready, willing and able (to totally destroy North Korea) but hopefully that won't be necessary. That is what UN is all about," he said.

Declaring Iran as a 'rogue state' and 'corrupt dictatorship, Trump said, "The deal with Iran is one of the worst that US has entered into. That deal is an embarrassment to the US."

He acknowledges that all countries have different goals, but the beautiful vision that led to the creation of the UN allows people to work side-by-side. Trump has criticized the UN repeatedly in the past.

19:45   'Time is running out': Pollution control panel warns NCR states ahead of winter
The authorities in the National Capital Region continued to be lax even as the level of pollution was rising gradually with the onset of winter, the Environment Pollution - Prevention and Control Authority said today, adding that "time is running out".
The Supreme Court-appointed body pulled up the states in the region, especially Uttar Pradesh, and asked them to deploy teams on the ground to flag violations such as open burning of waste.
"Three months ago, there was a meeting in Uttar Pradesh on the issue, but nothing has moved on the ground. If this continues, we will not hesitate to recommend strict action against the authorities concerned to the Supreme Court," EPCA Chairman Bhure Lal said.
The panel is also mulling over a proposal to roll out measures under the "very poor" category of the Graded Response Action Plan from September 25, instead of the scheduled October 15, in view of Delhi hosting a few matches of the U-17 FIFA World Cup.
"We will have to ensure that the air quality does not deteriorate to an extent that we have to enforce the emergency measures under the GRAP. The states should deploy patrolling teams to check violations such as open burning of waste and dust at the construction sites," Lal said.
A host of measures under the very poor category of the GRAP, which was drawn up by the Central Pollution Control Board and is being implemented by the EPCA, including the closure of the Badarpur thermal power plant, are scheduled to be initiated on October 15.
In Delhi, 40 CPCB teams have been going around the city checking violations and submitting feedback to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee.
But the outcome is not clear due to lack of coordination between the DPCC and the civic bodies, the EPCA was informed.

"The teams share their feedback with the DPCC which, in turn, passes on the report to the authorities concerned such as the municipal bodies. But the MCD is a black hole. Once shared, there is no follow-up on their part in terms of action taken," an EPCA member observed.
Winter is a critical time in Delhi as meteorological conditions trap air pollutants near the earth's surface.

19:21   Heavy rains lash Mumbai, train services partially hit
Heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Tuesday, partially affecting both road and train traffic.

Although there were no reports of waterlogging, traffic in the Maximum City was affected and train services were partially hit.

"All trains are running but slow. Please don't go by rumours," Mid-Day reported quoting the Central Railway PRO.

"Heavy rains in some sections but no disruption on WR lines. WR Mumbai suburban services are running normally," the Western Railway tweeted.

Several parts of the financial capital, including South Mumbai, Kandivili, Borivali, Andheri and Bhandup, received heavy rainfall, news agency Press Trust of India said.

The local civic body claimed that the situation was under control and citizen have been asked to take precaution.

As per information received from the Colaba observatory, the north Konkan region of Maharashtra, including Mumbai and its neighbouring areas, is expected to receive more rains.

"Some places are expected to receive heavy showers. Therefore, we have alerted citizens to take precaution," he said.

On August 29, the metropolis received more than 300 mm rainfall, crippling the transport services and throwing normal life out of gear.

18:18   Dawood's brother was eating biryani, watching KBC when cops detained him
When a Thane police team carried out a raid at the residence of Iqbal Kaskar, the younger brother of Dawood Ibrahim, at Nagpada in Mumbai on Monday, he was eating biryani and watching a reality TV show.
The unexpected presence of sleuths stunned Kaskar, as he asked them Maine kya kiya hai? (what have I done). However, the police team gave him time to let him finish the meal before taking him into their custody in connection with an extortion case against him.
"It was around 9.15 pm when Thane Police's Quick Response Team, equipped with highly sophisticated weapons, raided the residence of Haseena Parkar (Dawood's late sister) at Gordon Hall Apartments on Sophia Zuber Road in Nagpada in central Mumbai," an official said.
"Iqbal Kaskar was having biryani and watching Kaun Banega Crorepation television. He was stunned by the surprise raid and asked the police Maine kya kiya hain," he added.
According to the officials, the sleuths gave him time to finish his dinner and then took him into the custody along with three others who were present inside the room.
"Kaskar was taken into private vehicles, which swiftly left the area, before giving a chance to anyone to guess what has exactly happened. It was only during the journey of 30 to 34 odd kms (to Thane), that Iqbal got to know the reason of the action against him," the official said.
Kaskar and his aides were arrested for running an extortion racket against builders, land owners, businessmen as well as jewellers, he said.

17:43   Security beefed up to check entry of Rohingya
Security has been beefed up and patrolling by the Assam Rifles intensified along the Mizoram-Arakan (Myanmar) border in the state's Lawngtlai district, in view of the possibility of Rohingya Muslim militants and refugees attempting to enter the state.

A senior home department official said today that several meetings were held by the Mizoram police, paramilitary forces and intelligence agencies of both the central and state governments to review the security situation along the Myanmar border.

"Not a single Rohingya Muslim has so far entered Mizoram," he added. Mizoram shares a 404-km international border with Myanmar and a 318-km border with Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, around 170 refugees -- mainly Christians -- from Arakan in Myanmar, who entered Mizoram recently, had remained in the villages in the southern parts of the state, the official said. The refugees had fled Arakan in Myanmar's Rakhine state in the wake of clashes between the Myanmar Army and the Arakan Liberation Army.

17:09   Two trains derail at the same spot within 10 hours in UP
Two trains derailed at the same spot in a span of 10 hours in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh, but no casualties were reported. The engine of a goods train jumped the tracks near Sitapur Cantt station around 7.10 am today at exactly the same spot in Sitapur city in the district where the 54322 Burhwl- Balamau passenger train derailed around 9:40 pm yesterday, spokesperson of North Eastern Railway Alok Srivastava said.

"The track was repaired after the first derailment and services were restored around 1.20 am. Multiple trains ran on the same track without any hitch until the goods train derailed this morning," Srivastava added.

The spokesperson said the services on that route were held up for the second time when the engineers attended to the tracks this morning.

"The problem, however, was taken care of and train services were allowed once again after 10.20 am today," the spokesperson said, adding that an inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the twin derailments.

The divisional railway manager of North Eastern Railway, Alok Kumar, who rushed to the spot for inspection, said some trains were diverted following the second accident and the caution speed on the route was put at 10km/hr. There has been a spate of train accidents in Uttar Pradesh over the past two months. On September 7, seven carriages of the Shaktipunj Express derailed in Sonbhadra district.

16:40   Haryana govt to Centre: Transfer Pradhyumn murder case to CBI
The Haryana Government on Tuesday recommended that the Centre transfer the case of the murder of seven-year-old Pradhyumn Thakur to the CBI for further investigation, hours after it was revealed that probe agency was not contacted in this regard.

Haryana Home Secretary SS Prasad confirmed to ANI that the recommendation was indeed made to the government of India.

"The Haryana Government has recommended Government of India to transfer the case of Pradyuman Thakur to the CBI for further investigation," Prasad said.In this regard, he also wrote a letter to the CBI to initiate the investigation.

Chief Minister of Haryana Manohar Lal Khattar had promised a CBI investigation into the murder a week ago.

However, the CBI, earlier in the day, stated that it did not receive any notification from the Haryana Government to take up the investigation.

Meanwhile, the school, which opened on Monday -- 10 days after the murder of Pradhyumn -- has been shut down again for a week.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has declined the hearing of anticipatory bail application of Ryan Pinto, Grace Pinto and Francis Pinto - owners of the Ryan International Group.

On September 8, Pradhyumn was found dead inside the toilet of the Ryan International School, Gurugram, with his throat slit.

16:08   Ashamed of Rahul defending dynasty in US: Jaitley
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said he was ashamed of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi defending the culture of dynasty in a lecture in the United States last week.

"I was ashamed to see Rahul Gandhi, sitting in America, calling the dynasty culture an Indian phenomenon," Jaitley said at an event in New Delhi.

"Some parties may think that being centered around dynasty is an asset, but in the long run it, it becomes a burden," he said.

Speaking at an event at the University of California, Berkeley, on September 11, Rahul Gandhi had said that most Indian political parties were dynastic and that Indian politics functioned like that.

In remarks that did not exactly sound like defending the dynasty culture, Rahul had said, "It is a problem in all political parties in India. That's how the entire country is running. So don't just go after me....That's what happens in India."

15:35   Dawood's brother, 2 others sent to police custody
Just in: Underworld don Dawood's brother Iqbal Kaskar and 2 others sent to police custody for eight days by Thane court in an extortion case.

Two aides of Iqbal Kaskar, the brother of fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim, were today arrested in connection with an extortion case, a senior police official said.

Kaskar and his associates had allegedly been threatening a prominent builder in Thane, in Dawood's name since 2013 and extorted Rs 30 lakh and four flats from him, police said. Mumtaz Sheikh and Israr Ali Jamil Sayyad, who were earlier detained, were formally placed under arrest, Thane's Commissioner of Police Param Bir Singh said.

15:12   Modi government mulling to clear women's reservation bill next?
In what is being seen as an attempt to send a strong message on women empowerment just ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the central government is actively mulling the possibility of passing the Women's Reservation Bill at the Parliament.

The bill was cleared by the Rajya Sabha in 2010 during the UPA regime. As part of a larger outreach to women, the Congress had projected it as a victory for its President and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

The Manmohan Singh government, however, could not get the Bill passed in the Lok Sabha in the face of stiff opposition from allies like Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal and even Trinamool Congress.

The Bill, however, did not lapse after the UPA government demitted office in 2014 as the legislation was introduced and cleared by the Rajya Sabha, which is a permanent house.

The Bill has been pending before Parliament since then and now sources have said that the Modi government wishes to bring it back.

It would be the second piece of high impact legislation after GST, another unfinished agenda of the UPA government.

The PM has made it clear on many platforms that womens empowerment politically and economically, is his priority. The push to ban triple talaq was seen as part of this political message.

14:46   Suu Kyi 'burying head in sand' over Rakhine crisis: Amnesty
Aung San Suu Kyi and her government are "burying their heads in the sand" over the violence in Rakhine state, Amnesty International said today, criticising Myanmar's leader for failing to condemn the army's alleged
abuses in a televised speech.

The United Nations, rights groups, and a tide of Rohingya refugees pouring into Bangladesh have accused Myanmar's military of using bullets and arson to wage an "ethnic cleansing campaign" against the Muslim minority.

In her speech today, Suu Kyi expressed sympathy for the "suffering of all people" swept up in the violence but did not address accusations of ethnic cleansing.

She instead said only that anyone guilty of rights abuses would be brought to justice.

"Aung San Suu Kyi today demonstrated that she and her government are still burying their heads in the sand over the horrors unfolding in Rakhine State. At times, her speech amounted to little more than a mix of untruths and victim blaming," Amnesty said.

The rights group blasted Suu Kyi for remaining "silent about the role of the security forces", whom they have accused of being "engaged in a campaign of ethnic cleansing".

14:29   Chakma, Hajong citizenship: Arunachal students' union hold protests
The All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union protests in Itanagar against the move to grant citizenship to Chakma and Hajong refugees. The union also called for a 12-hour-strike against the move.

This comes in the aftermath of Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the Centre would urge the Supreme Court to modify its order of granting citizenship to Chakma-Hajong refugees so that the rights of the indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh are not diluted.

"There is no decision of the Government of India to grant citizenship. It is the order of the Supreme Court. We are trying to tell the honourable Supreme Court that giving Chakmas and Hajongs the same rights as Arunachali is not acceptable to us," he said.

"People of Arunachal must appreciate that for the first time that the Government of India has not agreed.... So we are appealing to the apex court to modify this order... to ensure that rights of the indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh are protected," the Minister of State for Home Affairs has said.

13:50   The one man in Myanmar who can end Rohingya misery
If there's one person who can immediately end the brutal scorched-earth campaign against the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar's Rakhine region, it is Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. But as the number of refugees fleeing the violence for neighbouring Bangladesh rapidly rises towards 400,000, there is little sign the 61-year-old military chief is considering a cessation of hostilities. An estimated 412,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh in less than a month as their villages burned and hundreds were killed.

However, these satellite images of Rohingya villages, before and after the clashes, speak of a different story.

13:11   HC judge recuses himself from hearing bail plea of Ryan trustees
Punjab and Haryana High Court judge, Justice A B Chaudhari, today recused himself from hearing the anticipatory bail plea of three trustees of Ryan International School in connection with the murder of a boy in its Gurugram school.

The matter will now come up before a separate bench of the high court. The group's CEO Ryan Pinto and his parents Augustine Pinto, the founding chairman, and Grace Pinto, the group's managing director had approached the high court last week, seeking anticipatory bail.

The bail plea today came up before the bench of Justice Chaudhari who recused from hearing the anticipatory bail petition.

"The matter will now be listed before some other bench," said Ryan trustees' counsel Arshdeep Singh Cheema.

The anticipatory bail plea was filed in the High Court Registry on September 16. But it was filed again after removal of certain objections raised by the court Registry in the matter.

On September 14, the Bombay High Court had rejected the anticipatory bail pleas of the three trustees of Ryan Group in connection with the murder of the boy.

The Pintos, who are based in Mumbai, had approached the Bombay High Court as they had apprehended arrest in the case after the school was accused of negligence in the death of seven-year-old Pradyuman.

Class 2 student Pradyuman Thakur was found with his throat slit in the school washroom in Gurugram on September 8. Bus conductor Ashok was arrested in connection with the crime.

12:39   The most important takeaway from Suu Kyi's speech
The other big takeaway from Myanmar State Councillor Aung San Suu Kyi's address to her countrymen.

From today, the country is set to begin a verification process for the return of Rohingya refugees, who had fled the western Rakhine state, in a bid to aid those who wish to return.

"We are concerned about the number of Muslims fleeing to Bangladesh. We are prepared to start the verification process soon," she said, referring to the unprecedented exodus of the Rohingya Muslims to Bangladesh, in a nationally televised address, the first since an army crackdown on the minority community was branded as "ethnic cleansing" by the United Nations.

"It is not the intention of the Myanmar Government to apportion blame or to abdicate responsibility. We condemn all human rights violation and unlawful violence. We are committed to the restoration of peace, stability and rule of law throughout the state," she added.

12:26   Aung San Suu Kyi's full speech on the Rohingya crisis
Myanmar State Councillor Aung San Suu Kyi has broken her silence on the Rohingya crisis in the country and has said that the government does not fear scrutiny by the international community, even as more than 4,00,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled from the northern Rakhine State.

"There have been allegations and counter-allegations that need to be investigated. The government still needs to find out what the real problems are," Suu Kyi said, in a nationally televised address, the first since an army crackdown on the Rohingya Muslim minority community was branded as "ethnic cleansing" by the United Nations.

Suu Kyi further stressed on the short time her government has been in power for, adding, "I am aware of the fact the world attention is focussed on the situation in the Rakhine State as a responsible member of the community of nations. Myanmar does not fear international scrutiny and is committed to bring peace and sustainable solution that will bring peace, stability and development for all communities within that state."

"We don't want Myanmar to be a nation divided by religious beliefs or ethnicities. Hate and fear are the main scourge and a transition for us is a transition to democracy after half a century or more of authoritarian rule. We now are in the process of nurturing our nation and yet imperfect democracy. Peace and stability have to be achieved after nearly 70 years of internal conflict that started on the day of our independence back in 1948," she stated.

Myanmar's de-facto leader added, "I want to share what challenges our country is facing and the steps that we are taking to overcome them. This year I shall not be travelling to New York to attend the U.N. session. People have voted for democracy. They, in fact, have entrusted to us the task of carrying out three responsibilities: democratic transition, peace and stability and development. None of these challenges are either easy or simple."

She further said that development has to be achieved after nurturing democratic values, establishing peace and stability and achieving sustainable development.

"Burma is a complex nation and its complexities are compounded by the fact that people expect us to overcome all these challenges in the shortest time as possible. I must remind you that our government has not been in power for even 18 months," she added.

"We too are concerned. We want to find out what the real problems are. We have to listen to every allegation. We have to make sure those allegations are based on solid evidence before we take any action," she further said.

Suu Kyi added that the majority of the Rohingya villages have not been affected by violence, adding that the military, which was accused of arson and indiscriminate killing, has been instructed to exercise restraint and avoid "collateral damage."

She also said that she was "deeply concerned" about the suffering of people caught up in the conflict."We are concerned to hear that numbers of Muslims are fleeing across the border to Bangladesh," she said, adding, "We want to find out why this exodus is happening."

Suu Kyi further said that an action would be taken against anyone, who goes against the law of the land or violates human rights, 'regardless of race or political position.'During the speech, she mentioned the Rohingyas by name only once, in reference to the armed militant group Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army.

12:17   AAP strikes back, revived after Bawana win
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) seems to have got its mojo back, geared up by a recent electoral victory that has given it new momentum.

From MLAs staging a sit-in outside the Delhi Lt Governor's office to the party recently announcing it would contest the Gujarat polls, the Bawana by-poll victory appears to have revived the party.

AAP, which was maintaining a low profile after a series of defeats, has recovered its voice and sharpened its attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government after winning the by-poll on August 28 by over 24,000 votes.

In the recent past, it has taken on the RSS-BJP over demonetisation, the killing of journalist Gauri Lankesh and a range of other issues. The party recently also said it would contest the Gujarat assembly polls, a decision it had put in cold storage after AAP's poor show in the Punjab and Goa polls, and subsequently in the MCD local elections.

On August 30, 45 AAP MLAs parked themselves at the Raj Niwas for over six hours, demanding that Lt Governor Anil Baijal clear the mohalla clinic file -- for neighbourhood health centres -- at the earliest. The mohalla clinic project is a flagship project of the Delhi government. The file was cleared by Baijal in less than a week.

12:12   Rahul Gandhis NYC outreach has impressive credit list
It may not have the magic of a Madison Square Garden community outreach, but Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi's ongoing American visit culminates in a reception hosted by the Indian National Overseas Congress USA at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, Times Square, New York City on Wednesday evening.

A two-page flier for the event caught our eye for a couple of things.

One, it implores you to 'join Rahul Gandhi's crusade to empower the youth, women and farmers of India'.

After Rahul, pride of place in the flier is accorded to Sam Pitroda, chairman, Overseas Congress of the AICC, and Shudh Parkash Singh, national president of the INOC, USA.

There will be cultural performances during the evening, and takeout food will be served, it says.

Admission is free, of course, but only for those who register online and produce a photo ID.

11:11   Cong skips question on Omar's tweet on Rohingya crisis
Former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid refused to give any comment on ex- Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah's tweet on Rohingyas issue.

Asserting that one who deals with the situation would know better Khurshid said, "When someone speaks of territory or land and people that they are associated with very closely as he is with the people of Jammu and Kashmir and the ground situation of the state. I want to leave the field to them because they know better."

"This threat, at least in J&K, is a post 2014 development. No such intelligence reports ever came up for discussion in Unified HQ meetings" Abdullah tweeted soon after the Centre filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court on deportation of Rohingya Muslims from India and said that the illegal influx of the refugees will adversely affect the fundamental rights of Indian citizens and cause a threat to the national security.

India Today reports that Honeypreet Insaan has been sighted near Pokhra in Nepal.

There are lookout notices against Honeypreet -- Gurmeet Ram Rahim's adopted 'daughter' -- and another key aide following apprehensions that they would escape from India.

India Today reports that Honeypreet could have fled to Nepal right under the nose of the Haryana police. Top Dera aide Pradeep Goyal alias Vicky, who was arrested from Udaipur on Saturday, has told the police that Honeypreet is not in India and had fled to Nepal.

A team of SIT probing the Panchkula violence tracked down Pradeep Goyal to Udaipur after tracing him and Honeypreet's location to a shopping mall called Celebration Mall. However, the police team could only find Pradeep who is in-charge of  Rajasthan Dera unit.

A police official confirmed that the SIT arrested Pradeep who is yet to be produced before the court. The police will try to get his remand to extract leads.

10:09   Slow industrial growth
The slow growth of the manufacturing sector has been a matter of concern for quite some time. The Congress government ceremoniously inaugurated a national manufacturing policy in 2011.

When he fought the 2014 general elections, the current prime minister coined the slogan, "Make in India". Although he did not specify what he wanted people to make, it was implicit that he wanted to attract more industry to India. It has not happened in these three years; industrial growth continues to languish below 5 per cent a year. What can be done about it?

10:05   Gloves off on refugees
The Narendra Modi government's justification to the Supreme Court today for the possible deportation of Rohingya refugees threatens to push India into a direct confrontation with the UN and slam shut a window of compromise New Delhi has used with illegal migrants till now.

In an affidavit largely identical to the one that was leaked by "mistake" last week, the Centre bluntly declared that since India was not a signatory to the UN's 1951 Refugee Convention or Protocol of 1967, it was not obliged to desist from deporting refugees to a country where they may be persecuted.

In this televised speech on the Rohingya refugee crisis she says Myanmar is ready to accept Rohingya refugees back into the country.

Around 40,000 Rohingyas have settled in India.

About 16,000 are registered with the United Nation's refugee agency.

-- Action will be taken against those who broke the law and violated human rights.

08:49   Chidambaram slams TN Speaker, Palaniswami over disqualification of MLAs
Former Union minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram came down heavily on the Tamil Nadu government and Speaker for disqualifying 18 MLAs of the TTV Dinakaran camp on Monday.

In an early morning tweet on Tuesday, Chidambaram wrote: Speaker's decision to disqualify MLAs blatantly partisan and to help minority TN Govt. Nothing can save sinking ship.

In direct reference to the Tamil Nadu government that has been juggling with numbers in the assembly, Chidambaram said no such action can help a sinking ship.

Four days after Speaker P Dhanapal told the Madras High Court that action has begun to disqualify MLAs supporting Dinakaran, on Monday, he disqualified all the 18 MLAs under Schedule 10 of the Indian Constitution which deals with the anti-defection law.

With Mondays move, the total strength of the AIADMK has now come down to 116.

Of the total 234 legislators, the number is now 231 excluding Jayalalithaa, Karunanidhi and the Speaker.

With 18 MLAs disqualified, the total number comes down to 213 and the halfway mark is 106. EPS-OPS merged faction has the support of 114 MLAs which is more than the required numbers to form the majority.

Chidambaram has been critical of the AIADMK turmoil that has been going on for many months now. Earlier in August, the senior Congress leader had termed the developments as low comedy turning into farce.

08:33   UPDATE: All eyes on Suu Kyi ahead of her speech on Rohingya crisis today
Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi is poised Tuesday to break her near-silence on communal violence scorching through Rakhine state, in a televised speech on a Rohingya refugee crisis that has shocked the world and prompted the UN to accuse the country's army of ethnic cleansing.

Suu Kyi's refusal so far to defend the Rohingya over nearly a month of violence has baffled and enraged an international community that once feted her as the champion of Myanmar's democracy struggle.

With global pressure cranked high, Suu Kyi has skipped the UN General Assembly in New York to manage the crisis at home and deliver her televised address -- the biggest yet of her time in office.

"She is going to tell the world the real truth," her spokesman Zaw Htay told reporters ahead of the speech scheduled for 0330 GMT (9 am IST).
