The Narendra Modi government's justification to the Supreme Court today for the possible deportation of Rohingya refugees threatens to push India into a direct confrontation with the UN and slam shut a window of compromise New Delhi has used with illegal migrants till now.

In an affidavit largely identical to the one that was leaked by "mistake" last week, the Centre bluntly declared that since India was not a signatory to the UN's 1951 Refugee Convention or Protocol of 1967, it was not obliged to desist from deporting refugees to a country where they may be persecuted.
