23:25   Trump told Abbas he intends to move US embassy to Jerusalem
US President Donald Trump outlined his intentions to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem in a call with President Mahmoud Abbas Tuesday according to Palestinian Authority spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh.

The Palestinians said that Abbas warned Trump in the call against the dangers of such a step and added that he would continue reaching out to world leaders to prevent it from happening. Neither the White House nor the Palestinians offered details on the timing of an embassy move, which previous administrations have delayed indefinitely.

Despite strong pushback from US allies and concerns about the safety of US military and diplomatic personnel in the region, Trump is insisting that he fulfill campaign promises about Jerusalem.

21:59   Trump's banking data handed over to US special counsel Mueller
Special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating the Russian meddling in the 2016 US Presidential election campaign, has been handed over the data on accounts held by United States President Donald Trump.

Mueller had forced the German banking giant Deutsche Bank to submit documents about its client relationship with the president by issuing the bank with a subpoena for information, reported the Guardian.

Deutsche Bank, which has loaned the Trump organisation millions of dollars for real estate ventures, said it would not comment on any of its clients.

Trump's daughter and adviser in the White House, Ivanka Trump, her husband, Jared Kushner, who is also a presidential adviser; and Kushner's mother, Seryl Stadtmauer, are all the clients of the Deutsche Bank.

The bank told Bloomberg, in a statement, that it had always cooperated with investigating authorities.

This comes after Trump's former national security advisor Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his conversations with the Russian ambassador in January.

Flynn is now cooperating with federal investigators.

Trump has ceaselessly thrown flak at the Mueller investigation and has denied the existence of any collusion between his campaign and Russia.

21:36   BBC in racism row after using Amitabh's image in Shashi Kapoor obit
The BBC has landed itself in a new racism row after it used footage of the wrong Bollywood star in its obituary.

Actor Shashi Kapoor died aged 79 on Monday, but the tribute to the star on the broadcaster's flagship news programme mistakenly  used footage of Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor.

Actor Adil Ray, who stars in BBC comedy Citizen Khan, said it was "poor when it would have taken them seconds to verify".

Other viewers also complained on social media.

BBC News at 10 editor Paul Royall apologised for the error in a statement on Twitter, saying the slip was not of the programme's "usual standards".

Kapoor, a prolific Bollywood actor and producer from the 1970s and 80s, died after a long illness in Mumbai early on December 4.

Among his memorable films were Deewar, Kabhie Kabhie, Namak Halal and Kaala Pathar.

21:05   Delhi pollution: Swachh Bharat of no good, says Mamata
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee once again raked up the issue of pollution-hit Delhi, stating that the Centre's ambitious 'Swachh Bharat Mission' was of no good.

The TMC supremo had yesterday said that she was "ashamed" at seeing Sri Lankan cricketers donning pollution masks while playing in Delhi, and asked the AAP government to make arrangements for checking pollution there.

"What good has the Swachh Mission done? In Delhi, Sri Lankan players are playing wearing masks. From political pollution to weather pollution, Delhi represents it all," Banerjee said.

She said pollution had gone up to such levels in Delhi that people have to wear masks even while eating and outdoors.

"Politicians, too, need a mask while talking... Charity begins at home. First manage your home, then think about other places," Banerjee said.

20:36   Next international game in Delhi not before 2020
BCCI's rotation policy might do what Sri Lankan team's complaints of poor air quality could not -- keep international cricket away from Delhi at least till 2020.

Delhi's viability as an international sports venue has been called into question after Sri Lankan players complained of breathing problems due to smog and continued to wear anti-pollution masks in the ongoing third Test against India.

"BCCI is pitching for their exclusive home season slot in February-March every year. They will only get that slot in February-March 2020 as per the new Future Tours Programme (FTP). Therefore, Kotla may or may not be in line for a Test match before 2020," a senior BCCI official said.

As per the rotation policy, Kotla has now got its Test match and in November it got an ODI. Their turn will not come next year as India will perhaps have at the most one full-fledged series," he said.

20:10   Close cracker shops: UP DGP's directive ahead of Babri anniversary
Uttar Pradesh DGP Sulkhan Singh today issued detailed directives to district police chiefs in the state for taking all necessary steps to ensure peace and amity on the anniversary of Babri mosque demolition tomorrow.

The respective police chiefs have been asked to promulgate prohibitory orders in consultation with the district magistrates, wherever required, and take all pre-emptive steps to ensure that no one collects bricks, stones,
acid bottles and other such things that could be used to harm peace, an official statement said.

Directives were issued to keep cracker shops closed on December 6 besides maintaining alert on shops selling wine and arms, the statement said, adding that special vigil be undertaken against rumour mongers.

Asking for proper deployment of the personnel so that they are visible to the public, the DGP said that additional force be used in the areas having a mixed population and are sensitive.

The police personnel deployed should be properly equipped with body protectors, helmets, tear gas shells and rubber bullets among others, the order said.

The DGP also suggested surprise checks on railway and bus stations, shopping malls, multiplexes and other such places.

19:47   Uniform Civil Code not possible, its not even an option: Law commission chairman
Terming the prospect of Uniform Civil Code difficult to implement, Law Commission Chairman Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan said UCC is not possible and not even an option.

Personal Laws can never be done away with as they have constitutional protection, Justice Chauhan said.

The 21st Law Commission is now planning to suggest specific amendments to several personal law legislations, dropping the idea of UCC, which gained momentum during public debate on instant triple talaq.

UCC is not possible. We will try to recommend religion-wise amendments in family laws. It would be the piecemeal way to suggest what are the changes required in Hindu law, Muslim law, Christian law, Parsi law, etc. We will target the problems of each religion and deal with them accordingly. We cannot take the whole UCC, as we cannot go outside the constitution, said Justice Chauhan.

The Law Panel chief said the exemptions under the Constitution must be honoured and UCC could disturb the essence of the Constitution.

Constitution itself has given so many exemptions to so many people like the tribals, etc. There are exemptions even in Civil Procedure Code and Criminal Procedure Code UCC is not a solution and there cannot be a composite Act. You cannot say forget the Constitution and do away with the sixth schedule. This would make people question their accession to the Indian Union on the understanding that they will be respected, said Justice Chauhan.

19:12   China stops funding CPEC road projects over graft issue
China has decided to temporarily stop funding at least three major road projects in Pakistan, being built as part of the $50 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, following reports of corruption, a decision that has left officials in Islamabad "stunned", a media report said today.

The decision by the Chinese government is likely hit over Rs 1 trillion-worth road projects of the Pakistan's National Highway Authority, and initially, may delay at least three such ventures, Dawn newspaper reported.

According to a senior government official, the funds would be released after Beijing issues 'new guidelines'.

The nearly $60 billion CPEC, a flagship project of China's prestigious One Belt One Road, passes through Pakistan -occupied Kashmir. It links China's restive Xinjiang region with Pakistan's Balochistan province.

18:14   BJP targets Cong after Sibal seeks deferment of Ayodhya case
The BJP today asked the Congress to clarify if it agreed with its leader Kapil Sibal, who as the counsel for the Sunni Waqf Board in the Supreme Court sought deferment of the Ayodhya case until after 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The apex court today rejected Sibal's submission that the hearing in Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute be put off till the next general election as the atmosphere was not conducive.

BJP spokesperson G V L Narasimha Rao tried to corner the Congress over Sibal's submission in the apex court.

"By seeking deferment of the Ayodhya case until after the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Kapil Sibal has politicised the legal dispute. The Congress must clarify if Sibal is representing it or the Sunni Waqf Board? Or, is it the case that the board and the Congress are working in tandem?" he asked.

Rather than seeking an early resolution to this vexed legal issue, why is the Congress party trying to perpetuate uncertainty, he asked.
The Supreme Court today decided to hear the civil appeals filed by various parties challenging the 2010 Allahabad high court verdict on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute on February 8 next year.

15:24   SC begins final hearings on Ayodhya case
The Supreme Court began the final hearing in the Ayodhya land dispute case today, a day before the 25th anniversary of the demolition of the medieval-era mosque -- the Babri Masjid.

A specially constituted bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Ashok Bhushan and Abdul Nazeer are hearing a total of 13 appeals filed against the 2010 judgement of the Allahabad High Court in four civil suits.

Senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Rajeev Dhavan, representing the Sunni Waqf Board argued that a larger bench with either 5 or 7 judges should hear this case.

Kapil Sibal reading out in SC the details of exhibits filed by the contesting defendants before the Allahabad High Court told the three-judge bench of the Supreme Court that all these exhibits are not filled before this court. He submitted that all the pleadings are not complete.

Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the State of Uttar Pradesh rebutted all the arguments of Sibal. Mehta told the SC that all the related documents and requisite translation copies are on record.

Sibal who is representing Sunni Waqf Board raised doubts over assertions of ASG Mehta asking how was it possible for more than 19000 pages of documents to be filed in such short time.

Sibal told SC that he and the other petitioners have not been served relevant documents of pleadings. Sibal told the court that whenever this matter is heard, there are serious repercussions outside court and to preserve the decorum of law and order, and that he personally requests the court to take this matter up on July 15, 2019, once all the pleadings are complete.

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan has penned a heartfelt post for late actor Shashi Kapoor, with whom he formed an enormously successful on-screen partnership.

Kapoor, one of the stalwarts of the Indian cinema industry, passed away on Monday at the age of 79.

The veteran actor shared the link of his blog on Twitter as he wrote, "T 2731 - To Shashji from your 'babbua' .. !!

Big B, in his post, recalled the day when he first saw Shashi Kapoor's picture on a magazine.

"Standing elegantly without a care in the world, I saw him standing by a Mercedes Sports car, a convertible, a smart trimmed beard and moustache, adorning involuntarily, the face of this incredibly handsome man. It was a picture that filled almost an entire page of a magazine. Shashi Kapoor . son of Prithviraj Kapoor, younger brother to Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor, making a debut in a forthcoming film, is what the caption read. And I said to myself, as very uncertain thoughts raced through my mind of wanting to become a film actor, that, with men like him around, I stood no chance at all," wrote the 75-year-old.

Senior Bachchan revealed that Shashi Kapoor had somewhere 'let himself go' after the demise of his wife Jennifer Kendal.

"He had been ailing .. somewhere he had let himself go after the passing away of his dear wife Jennifer .. I had visited him on occasion in Hospital during some of the times he had been hospitalised earlier .. but I never went to see him again .. I would never have .. I never ever wanted to see this beautiful friend and 'samdhi' in the state I saw him in hospital .... and I did not today, when they informed me that he had gone ."

The 'PINK' star ended the blog on a sad note, saying, "He fondly addressed me as 'babbua' .. and with him have gone many incredible unread chapters of his and my life."

Big B and Shashi Kapoor acted in blockbusters including 'Deewar' (1975), 'Kabhi Kabhie' (1976), 'Trishul' (1978) and 'Namak Halaal' (1982).

09:46   LeT terrorists who killed Amarnath pilgrims eliminated
Three Lashker-e-Tayiba terrorists, including two Pakistanis, allegedly responsible for carrying out an attack on Amarnath pilgrims in July this year, were killed in an encounter in South Kashmir, police said on Tuesday.
One terrorist, who had managed to flee from the encounter site, was also arrested by the police from a maternity hospital of Anantnag district of South Kashmir, they said.
The encounter broke on Monday when the terrorists opened fire on an army convoy, on its way to Srinagar, at Qazigund on Jammu-Srinagar national highway. One soldier was killed in the attack while another sustained
injuries.
The security forces cordoned off the area and launched a hunt for the terrorists. The search operation turned into an encounter with militants which ended at 2 am this morning, the police said.
The police identified the dead militants as Yawar Basir, who is a local militant, Abu Furqan and Abu Maviya (both foreign terrorists). Basir, hailing from Habiash of Kulgam, joined ranks with Lashker-e-Tayiba this year in February after snatching weapon from a policeman.
Furqan had taken over as the head of Lashker-e-Tayiba in South Kashmir after the death of Abu Ismail, who had led the attack on Amarnath pilgrims in July this year.
Police said that all the three, killed on Tuesday, were part of the squad that carried out the attack on yatris on July 10. Eight pilgrims were killed and 19 others injured.
Police said the group headed by Furqan, was involved in a series of terror crimes in Anantnag and Kulgam area, which included the Yatra Bus Attack case at Bantingo, few attacks on security forces at Lower Munda on the national highway, attack on police party at bus stand in Anantnag.
Furqan had replaced Ismail in South Kashmir and was responsible for the recent attacks carried by LeT, police said.
Pursuing the leads available at Qazigund encounter, one individual Rashid Ahmed Allai of Hamzapora sangam Bijibehera was arrested from Janglatmandi maternity hospital with a Chinese pistol and live cartridges last night. He was missing since last two days from his house and had joined the Yawar group of LeT. -- PTI

09:23   Time and nation will decide on Rahul's leadership: Sena MP
Time and nation will decide on the leadership skills of Rahul Gandhi, who is set to be elevated as Congress president, a Shiv Sena MP said.
The 47-year-old Congress vice president filed his nomination papers for the post of party chief yesterday.
"When a party elects its president, it knows what challenges it would face in future. They (Congress) faced debacle in the last elections.
"If they feel, he (Gandhi) is competent enough (to face these challenges), it is OK," Sena MP Arvind Sawant told PTI when asked about the Congress leader's imminent elevation.
"Let time decide. Off late, when he was abroad, the media said there was a change in Rahul. So let his coronation take place, let him occupy the chair, the country will also decide (on his leadership skills)," he added.
NCP leader Dhananjay Munde said Gandhi's elevation is taking place at an appropriate time, wherein the country is moving towards "dictatorship".
"I congratulate Rahul Gandhi for his (proposed) elevation. This is happening at a time when the country is moving away from democracy and heading towards dictatorship and there is an urgent need of a powerful Opposition.
"A young leader of the country's oldest party will be able to understand and solve the issues of the youth, who account for more than half of the country's population," the Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Council said.

Munde said he hoped Gandhi would succeed in uniting the Opposition and help check the rise of "communal forces" in the nation.

Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan said Gandhi had spent enough time traversing the length and breadth of the nation in the last five to seven years to gain the experience required to head the party.
The former chief minister claimed the BJP fears Gandhi's rise and is hence, criticising his elevation.
"He has travelled across the country and also abroad. The BJP is bound to criticise him as they fear his leadership. Due to his presence in poll-bound Gujarat, Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) had to address around 15 public meetings there.
"The BJP also lined up a battery of chief ministers and Central party leaders to counter him," Chavan said. -- PTI

08:45   Big win for Trump as US SC allows his travel ban to go into full effect
In a major victory for President Donald Trump, the United States Supreme Court has allowed his travel ban to take full effect pending appeal, for people coming from six Muslim-majority countries.
As a result of the Supreme Court's ruling, Trump's travel ban, which restricts travel to the US by people from Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia and Chad without bona fide connections to the US, can take full effect while legal challenges proceed.
The travel ban is the third version of a contentious policy that Trump first sought to implement a week after taking office in January.
Seven of the nine judges lifted restrictions on the travel ban imposed by other courts earlier. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Justice Sonia Sotomayor said they would have denied the government's request.
The court gave no reason for its decision, but said it expected lower court review of the executive orders to proceed quickly.
"Multiple government agencies have conducted a comprehensive, worldwide review of the information shared by foreign governments that is used to screen aliens seeking entry to the US," US Solicitor General Noel Francisco argued in court papers.
"We are not surprised by today's Supreme Court decision permitting immediate enforcement of the President's proclamation limiting travel from countries presenting heightened risks of terrorism," White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said after the order.
Trump's travel ban was challenged by Hawaii and American Civil Liberties Union in separate lawsuits. They argued that such a travel ban discriminates against Muslims.
"It is difficult to conceive of a more flagrant example of discrimination because of nationality," said Indian American attorney Neal Katyal, who appeared for Hawaii.
The New York Immigration Coalition Executive Director, Steven Choi, said that it is entirely unacceptable and un- American to discriminate against people based on race or religion.
"Allowing the full enforcement of the Muslim ban will not make this country safer or greater. Nearly a year after we rallied at JFK in response to the first Muslim ban, we will continue to fight Trump's plan to turn bigotry into policy and resist this latest assault on our liberties just as we have every day since Trump took office," Choi said. -- PTI

00:07   Nelson Mandela funeral: 'Millions misspent'
South Africa's corruption watchdog has found officials misused millions of dollars during Nelson Mandela's funeral four years ago.

According to the report, 300m rand (Rs 142 crore)  was redirected from a development fund to help with costs.

It had been earmarked for things like "sanitation, the replacement of mud schools and the refurbishment of hospitals", the report stated.

Instead, the authorities allegedly spent it on items like $24 T-shirts.

Allegations of misuse first emerged in 2014, months after Mandela's funeral, which was held in Qunu, in Eastern Cape, in December 2013 and was attended by heads of state from around the world.

Now, almost exactly four years after Mandela's death at the age of 95, the country's public protector Busi Mkhwebane has asked current President Jacob Zuma to pursue the allegations further.

The 300-page report describes how officials in the Eastern Cape pocketed funds, ignored basic rules, and inflated costs.
