23:38   Did it crash or land? Search on for Europe's Mars craft
Europe's second attempt to reach Mars' surface appeared in peril today as initial analysis suggested the latest lander may have plummeted to its demise.
While holding out faint hope, ground controllers said it seemed the paddling pool-sized lander's parachute may have been discarded too early, and its fall-breaking thrusters switched off too soon.
The lander, dubbed Schiaparelli, was on a test-run for a future rover that will seek out evidence of life, past or present, on the Red Planet.
But it fell silent seconds before its scheduled touchdown, while its mothership Trace Gas Orbiter entered Mars' orbit as planned -- part of a joint European-Russian project.
"We are not in a position yet to determine the dynamic condition at which the lander touched the ground," European Space Agency head of solar and planetary missions Andrea Accomazzo told a webcast news briefing at mission control in Darmstadt, Germany.
Further analysis must be done of some 600 megabytes of data the 230 million-euro (USD 251-million) craft sent home before its signal died, to "know whether it survived structurally or not."
This could take "some time", Accomazzo added.

21:19   Filmmakers just followed law; Johar is being bullied: Zoya
Director Zoya Akhtar feels filmmaker Karan Johar is being "bullied" over release of his movie Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and said Pakistani artists were taken in films in since they had valid visas.
The film is slated for release on Diwali-eve, is facing threat of disruption from the Raj Thackeray-led MNS as it features Pakistani actor Fawad Khan.
Asked about this, Zoya told PTI, "You (referring to Karan) are in a situation where you are being bullied and nobody is helping you...You are not being protected.

"This is chaotic. The Government is saying one thing, people (referring to MNS) are saying something else. In all this what a lone person is suppose to do."
The "Dil Dhadakne Do" helmer feels filmmakers followed the law by taking artists from the neighbouring country, who were in India on visas given by the Government.
"It's not about encouraging talent (from Pakistan). It's about following the law. They (Government) are giving visas to Pakistani actors. I am following the law. And any political party has to follow the law...
"If they are not doing so, those elected to power (the Government) should make sure they don't break the law. Filmmakers are not breaking the law (by giving work to Pakistani artists)," the 44-year-old said.

21:04   Banks recall 3.2 mn debit cards as data security 'compromised'
In biggest-ever security breach affecting the Indian banking sector, 32 lakh debit cards of various public and private sector banks are feared to have been 'compromised' by cyber malware attack in some ATM systems, even as the government asked people not to panic.

Several banks, including state-run SBI, have recalled a large number of cards, while many others blocked the ones suspected to have been compromised and asked their customers to change PINs (personal identification number) before use.

Fraudulent withdrawals have been reported from 19 banks so far, while complaints have been received from few banks that their customers' cards were used fraudulently abroad, mainly in China and USA while customers were in India.

"All affected banks have been alerted by card networks that a total card base of about 3.2 million could have been possibly compromised. Out of this 0.6 million are RuPay cards," said National Payments Corporation of India, the umbrella body for all retail payments system in India.

In a statement, NPCI said the complaints of fraudulent withdrawals so far have come from 641 customers and the total amount involved is Rs 1.3 crore as reported by various affected banks.

Seeking to calm worried bank customers, the Department of Financial Services Additional Secretary G C Murmu told PTI, "Only about 0.5 per cent of total debit card details were compromised while remaining 99.5 cards are completely safe and bank customers should not panic."

20:24   Triple talaq highly misused custom: NCW chief
National Commission of Women Chairperson Lalitha Kumaramangalam today said triple talaq is a "highly misused" custom and there was a need for scraping it to protect the rights of Muslim women.

"Triple talaq is not a political issue. It is an effort to protect the rights of Muslim women. It cannot be linked to Uniform Civil Code. It has nothing to do with it," she said.

The NCW chief said she had received several representations from Muslim women who said they felt "disempowered" because of the practice of triple talaq.

"There is a concern about how triple talaq is unilaterally applied leaving women and children in a bad shape. It is a highly misused custom that has to be done away with. Several Islamic countries have banned it," she said.

Asked about the practices followed by other religions, Kumaramangalam said, "We are not comparing with women from other religions. It is not a comparison of religious laws and customs," she said.

Senior batsman Younis Khan wants India and Pakistan to set aside their strained relations and resume five-day matches as both are giants of the game.

"It's my wish to play a Test in Pakistan again, play against India and against all top teams," Younis told reporters in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

"India and Pakistan are two giants of cricket -- one number one and the other number two -- so whatever the situation between the two nations it must be forgotten and cricket should be played, people want to watch them play."

There has been no Test cricket between the two nations since 2007. Bilateral cricket ties were severed in the wake of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which New Delhi blamed on militants based in Pakistan.

Pakistan did tour India in December 2012-January 2013 for a short limited over series but that failed to revive full ties, including Tests.

13:44   US media blasts Trump's 'contempt'f for democracy
Slamming Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for his refusal to commit that he will accept the results of the November 8 polls, top American newspapers today described his remarks as a "contempt" for democracy.

"Trump's breathtaking repudiation of American democracy," screamed The Washington Post in its lead editorial, while The New York Times described this as a "contempt" for democracy.

"Mr Trump's meltdown in the closing weeks could be dismissed as a sore loser's bizarre attempt at rationalising his likely defeat. But his trashing of the democratic process, in service of his own ego, risks lasting damage to the country, and politicians of both parties should recoil from him and his cynical example," The New York Times editorial board said.

"The presidential debate was another exercise in narcissism, bombast and mendacity by Mr Trump. One could only hope that this might be the last grand display of his gross unfitness to be president," the major US daily said.

In his third debate, Trump said he would "look at the time" when asked if he would accept the results of the November 8 presidential elections. The Washington Post said though Clinton made some gaffs during the debate, but "they fade to the status of trivia in the face of an opponent who will not accept the basic rules of American democracy.

"Mr Trump's biggest mistake was his refusal to say he would accept the election results if he loses," The Wall Street Journal said. "Mr Trump made it worse by saying 'I will keep you in suspense'," the daily said.

"Voters on the right and left want to have faith in the electoral system. Mr Trump's statement makes us wonder if Mr Trump and adviser Steve Bannon are planning to blame everyone else if he does lose," The Wall Street Journal said. Trump's vice presidential running mate Mike Pence said that he is taking a wait-and-see approach before deciding to accept the results of the elections. "He'll take a wait-and-see approach," he told MSNBC in a post-debate interview.

They should carry all their activities within the frameworks of law and order," Rijiju told reporters. "I have spoken to Rajnath Singh about the incident," he added.

Vice Chancellor Kumar in the meanwhile has issued an ultimatum to students to let the administration work and said that he is determined to conduct the scheduled academic council, the highest policy making body, meeting at 2.30 p m on Thursday at a different venue. The top brass of JNU, including the VC, rectors and chief proctor have been "illegally confined" in the building for over 22 hours now. Kumar said that if they are stopped from performing their duty (attending the AC meeting) "law will take its own course."

"We have been confined illegally in the administration building since 2.30pm yesterday (Wednesday). We had a series of meeting with the students explaining the number of steps that we have taken in search of the missing student. However the students are very adamant and not letting us go out of this building. They said they have several demands and the administration has to concede those," he said addressing a press conference.

"One of the demands is that we should contact the police which we have already done. We have written several letters to the police and our officials are in regular touch with the police in search for Najeeb Ahmed. The other demand that was made is that the entire incident should be investigated.

The chief proctorial office is already investigating and if anyone is found guilty we have assured the agitating students that they will be punished as per the university rules. Students also demanded from the administration to make an appeal to Najeeb to return which we already have done," he added.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today spoke to Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Kumar Verma and asked him to submit a report on the whole episode.Meanwhile, Delhi Police has announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on any information on the missing JNU student.Meanwhile, no trace of Najeeb Ahmad was found even on the sixth day after he went missing on October 15.

"We request Kashmiri Pandits to return to their homes. We take responsibility of their safety," Zakir Rashid Bhat alias 'Musa', the self-styled commander of the militant outfit, said in a brief video message released yesterday.

Thousands of Kashmiri Pandits were forced to flee the Valley after they were targeted by militant groups during the outbreak of militancy and have been living in Jammu and other parts of the country.

"They should look at those Pandits who never left Kashmir. Who has harassed or killed them?" asked slain militant Burhan Wani's 'successor'.

Dressed in military camouflage and fiddling with a grenade in the video, Bhat, who dropped out of engineering course from a Punjab college and joined Hizbul Mujahideen some years back, also gave a bizzare argument that Pandits were forced out of the Valley under a planned strategy to target Muslims.

He claimed that the government was planning to take action in the Valley in an operation similar to 'Operation Blue Star' in Punjab. Bhat revealed in the 1.38 minute video that the militant was planning to raise an exclusive group of Sikh youths in the outfit.

"Our Sikh brothers are requesting us to join Hizbul Mujahideen'. We are with them on every front and God willing, we will try and make an exclusive group for Sikhs in the outfit," he said.

About the latest trend of weapon snatching in the Valley, especially in south Kashmir districts, he said, "Many youths have taken to Jihad, snatched the weapons and joined our ranks."

Two green banners with religious slogans and as many weapons on both sides behind him could also been seen in the video which was shot at an unknown location.

11:35   JNU VC gheraoed by students appeals for food
As protest in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) turns volatile with students blocking the administrative building and locking up the vice-chancellor and other officials over the missing student, varsity vice-chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar on Thursday said the move by the protesting students was 'unfortunate and illegal'.

Vice-chancellor Jagadesh Kumar told ANI in a telephonic conversation that it is wrong on the part of the students to gherao him and other officials. "We are also concerned that Najeeb Ahmad is missing. We have talked to police also but gheraoing me and other officials is wrong. Students have gheraoed us since 2.30 p.m. yesterday. We had to sleep on floor and there is no food to eat. Students are not even allowing wives of officials to meet," he added.

Yesterday, also at around 1.30 a.m., the VC tweeted, "Since the students did not let us go home inspite our appeal, we have no other option but be confined to the administration building".

Meanwhile, no trace of missing Najeeb Ahmad was found even on the sixth day after he went missing. Ahmad was allegedly assaulted by ABVP activists on October 14 during a mess election campaign at Mahi-Mandvi hostel. From the next day, he went missing. According to students, he left the hostel without his wallet, mobile and even his footwear.

11:07   How the GOP will explain away Trump
When I last spoke to Rick Perlstein, the historian of modern conservatism, Donald Trump had shocked the country by rising to the top of Republican primary polls. He hadn't yet won a single state, however, and the thought of him as the GOP nominee still seemed absurd. Now, with three weeks until the election, Trump's unprecedented candidacy has upended American politics. It has also riven the Republican Party, an organization that Trump ostensibly leads and quite clearly has no use for. Read more

10:53   The story behind Obamas half brother present at the final debate
Malik Obama is exactly the kind of man that Donald Trump says he'd like to keep out of the United States. He's a Muslim. He comes from Kenya, a country that has been racked by unrest in recent years and has been the target of terrorists from Somalia, who have fashioned themselves as Islamists. He currently has between three and 12 wives -- he won't say exactly how many -- and, clearly, doesn't adhere to traditional American family values, however you might define them.

But Malik Obama is a naturalized U.S. citizen, and he's the half brother of the current U.S. president. Most importantly, however, he is an ardent supporter of Donald Trump. At the Trump campaign's request, Malik Obama will be in the audience of tonight's presidential debate in Las Vegas, allowing Trump and his faithful to collectively thumb their nose at President Obama and his favored successor, Hillary Clinton.  Read more

Filmmaker Karan Johar on Tuesday released a video statement in which he said that "he will not engage with talent from Pakistan."

After various attacks and call for boycotts by various political parties on Karan Johar's 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil', the film's release seems to have been jeopardized.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Wednesday sought to send out a message that the state would firmly deal with the protests.

Johar has issued a video statement that he would not "engage talent from neighbouring country given the circumstances."

09:51   Trump cites India's growth rate to compare it with US economy
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump today cited India and China's high growth rates to compare them with America's economy, which he said is "dying", as he slammed his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton's plans to boost the economy and called her tax plan a disaster.

As the two candidates came face-to-face for the third and final presidential debate at the University of Nevada, just three weeks before the elections, they sparred on issues concerning the economy, nuclear weapons, Russia and their fitness to be US President.

"So I just left some high representatives of India. They are growing at eight per cent. China is growing at seven per cent, and that for them in the catastrophically low number. We are growing our last report came out, it's right over from the one per cent level. And I think it's going down," Trump said in response to a question on the economy asked by moderator Chris Wallace of the Fox News.

He said America's job reports is "anemic"and "terrible" and the country is losing its businesses. "Last week, as you know, the end of last week, they came out with an anemic jobs report.

A terrible jobs report," he said. "We are not making things any more, relatively speaking. Our product is pouring in from China, pouring in from Vietnam, pouring in from all over the world," he said. Trump also blamed Clinton's husband former president Bill Clinton for putting in place the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) agreement, saying it "is one of the worst deals ever made of any kind of signed by anybody."

08:09   Closing statements
Clinton: I'm reaching out to all Americans because we need everybody. Let me speak directly to the camera. We need your talents. I've seen the presidency up close. Responsibility and opportunity. I have made the cause of children and families my life's work. That will be my mission. Families against corporate interests. Give me a chance.

Trump: She's raising the money from the people she wants to control. Doesn't work that way. We're going to make America great again. We have a depleted military. Take care of our veterans. Policemen and women disrespected. Inner cities.. shot walking to the store. All she's done is talk to the African Americans and the Latinos. We are going to make America strong again... it has to start now. "We cannot take four more years of Barack Obama and that's what you get when you get her.

08:05   I'm going to hit 6% growth: Trump
Trump on the debt: I'm going to create a bunch of jobs and hit 6% growth with my tremendous economic machine. I'm going to create the kind of country that we were from the standpoint of industry. We have the greatest business people in the world... we use political hacks. We have to use our great people. Will there be closing statements? This all seems to be ending so... irresolutely.

Clinton: When I hear Donald talk like that I wonder when he thought America was great. He says before me and Obama. But "He has been criticizing our country for decades. In 1987 he took out a $100,000 ad in the New York Times, when Ronald Reagan was president, and said exactly what he said just now.

Clinton: If you look at the debt, I pay for everything I'm proposing... we'll have what economists call middle-out growth... I want to invest in you, I want to invest in your family... he started off as a millionaire...

Trump: I've heard that before.

07:57   Syrian refugees in US are a Trojan horse: Trump
ISIS, Syria, Iraq, Aleppo on the agenda.

Wallace: Would you use US troops in Syria or Iraq?

Trump: Mosul's so sad. We had Mosul. About three months ago, I started reading, that they're going to attack... whatever happened to the element of surprise... these people have all left.

Trump says the only reason Iraq is going into Mosul is because Clinton is running for president. She wanted to look tough.

Clinton says she's "encouraged" by the special forces helping Iraqi troops but will not support putting troops on the ground, adding that it's not in US interests.

Trump: Syrian refugees in the US are a Trojan horse, see where it gets us. Lots of luck Hillary. Thanks a lot, you're doing a great job.

Clinton beams.

Wallace asks him if he will accept the results: I will tell you at the time... I will keep you in suspense.

Trump believes offence is the best form of defence so he digresses from sexual misconduct to the Clinton email scandal. "Nobody has more respect for women than I do. And frankly those stories have been debunked. I want to talk about something slightly different -- the 33,000 deleted emails. She's lied hundreds of times. And she gets away with it? That's what you should really be talking about, not fiction.

Clinton: Every time Donald is pushed, he immediately goes to denying responsibility, and it's not just women. He never apologizes... he also went after a disabled reporter...

Trump: Wrong.

07:32   Donald thinks belittling women makes him bigger: Clinton
Clinton: At the last debate, we heard Donald talking about what he did to women. And we had a number of women coming forward saying that's what he did to them.

Clinton says Trump said that he could not have possibly done that because they weren't attractive enough.

Trump says he did not say that.

Clinton: Donald thinks belittling women makes him bigger... I don't think there's a woman out there who doesn't know what that feels like.

Clinton says that's who Donald is and the country has to stand up and declare its own identity. America is great because America is good, and it really is up to all of us to make that true.'

07:29   Stories totally false: Trump

07:22   Clinton: Trump used undocumented labour to build Trump Tower
Hillary Clinton comes back with: Donald Trump "used undocumented labor to build Trump Tower."

Trump: The one thing you have over me experience, but it's bad experience. You talk , but you don't get anything done. When you were secretary of state, $6 billion was missing. How can it go missing. If we could run my country the way I run my company, we would have a country we could be proud of.

"If you become president this country is going to be a mess, believe me."
image
07:17   Topic: The Economy
Wallace: How will you create more jobs and growth?

Clinton: When the middle class thrives the country thrives. Biggest jobs program since WWII. New jobs. Clean energy. Clinton says Trump could cost the country 3m jobs because his whole plan is to cut taxes on the wealthy. She calls it "trickle-down economics on steroids.'

Wallace tells Clinton her jobs plan was like the Obama stimulus plan which did not produce strong growth.

07:12   Trump: Hillary doesn't like Putin because he outsmarted her in Syria
Trump is basically telling the American people to vote for him because Vladimir Putin doesn't respect Hillary.

Trump: Hillary Clinton has been proven to be a liar, this is just another lie. Putin has outsmarted Clinton every step of the way. She doesnt like Putin coz he has outsmarted her in Syria.

Hillary: Trump is a person who has been very cavalier about the use of nuclear weapons...which I think is terrifying. He'd rather believe Putin than intel agencies of our country.

Moderator Chris Wallace from Fox News asks Trump: Do you condemn any interference by Russia?

Trump: By Russia or anybody else? Of course I condemn. I don't know Putin... Let me tell you Putin has outsmarted her and Obama every single step of the way.

07:01   Trump: Hillary Clinton wanted the wall on the US-Mexico border
This is a particularly important debate. After the first two vitriolic presidential debates, much of which were spent trading insults and discussing sexual assault allegations rather than policies, the third could top the lot as Trump battles to make up lost ground on his rival.

06:59   Clinton wanted the wall: Trump
Trump says that Hillary Clinton wanted the wall. (Trump has said he will put up a wall on the US-Mexico border if he comes to office.)

Clinton asked to comment says, "I voted for border security and there are some limited places where that was appropriate.. but it is clear when you look at what Donald has been proposing... that he has a very different view about what we should do. We will not have open borders, we will have secure borders."

On immigration: Nothing divides the two as much as immigration.

I was up in New Hampshire..many of the problems caused by Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama...heroin. We have to have strong borders. I'm going to build a wall. We need a wall... we stop the drugs. .. one of my first acts would be round up all of the drug lords ... and we're going to get them out.

06:47   Trump, Clinton face-off in third and final debate
Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have taken to the stage in Las Vegas for the third and final debate in an increasingly bitter race for the United States presidency.

For Trump, the debate is perhaps his last opportunity to turn around a race that appears to be slipping away from him.

Polls show Trump is losing in key battleground states after facing a slew of sexual assault allegations. But Clinton remains unpopular with many US voters and has faced more bad headlines about her use of a private email server.

00:47   IS leaders 'abandon' Mosul as Iraq forces close in
Jihadist leaders are fleeing Mosul, a top US general in the coalition battling the Islamic State group said on Wednesday as Iraqi forces closed in on the northern city.

Mosul was where IS supremo Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared his "caliphate" two years ago but is now the group's last major stronghold in Iraq.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, who announced the launch of a broad offensive to retake the city on Monday, visited the front line.

In the biggest Iraqi military operation in years, forces have retaken dozens of villages, mostly south and east of Mosul, and are planning multiple assaults for Thursday.

"We are telling Daesh (IS) that their leaders are abandoning them. We've seen a movement out of Mosul," said Major General Gary Volesky, who heads the anti-IS coalition's land component.

He told reporters in a video briefing that the many foreigners among the 3,000 to 4,500 IS fighters would likely end up forming the core of the holdout jihadist force.

Volesky noted that the Iraqis would screen anyone leaving Mosul, and attempts by foreign fighters to blend in to an expected exodus of displaced people would be thwarted.

"It's difficult for them to blend into the local population based on the number of different types of foreign fighters that there are," he said.

00:05   Ahead of last Prez debate, Clinton leads Trump by 9 points
Hillary Clinton has taken a nine point lead over Donald Trump in a four-way race, a new national poll has found, hours before the two leaders meet in the third and final United States presidential debate in Las Vegas.
Democratic party nominee Clinton has a nine point lead over her Republican rival, according to Bloomberg Politics poll in which the former secretary of state got 47 per cent support while the controversial real estate billionaire received 38 per cent backing in a four-way race.
Libertarian Gary Johnson received eight per cent support, and Green Party candidate Jill Stein registered three per cent, CNN quoted the poll as saying ahead of the final presidential debate at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Clinton, 68, made significant gains in the new poll among demographic groups that she has struggled to win over during the campaign, and which have formed the bedrock of Trump's base.
The Democrat is now winning male voters, 46 per cent to 44 per cent, and voters without a college degree, 48 per cent to 44 per cent. Clinton also maintained a large 17-point edge among women voters overall, and carries white women 46 per cent to 45 per cent.
