In January, the government selected 20 cities in the first round of the mission. The cities were selected after a city challenge competition which was held between 97 cities and UTs.

The central government will provide Rs.200 crore in the first year to each selected city and Rs 100 crore subsequently each year. Plans will be implemented by a special purpose vehicle set up for each city.
