23:19   'Occupy UGC': Students march to HRD ministry, detained
The students, who have been camping outside the UGC office for 29 days in protest against the scrapping of non-NET fellowships, today once again marched to the HRD Ministry's office in Shastri Bhawan here to submit a memorandum.

However, the agitating students could not meet any officials from the Ministry, and 40 of them were detained by police hours later as they refused to budge from outside Shastri Bhawan.

According to police officials, around 40 students were detained and taken to Parliament Street police station.

"Around 40 students were detained today for violating prohibitory orders," a senior police official said.

Earlier, the students had marched to the Ministry on November 5, when HRD Minister Smriti Irani had come out for a brief interaction with them and reiterated the government's stand of creating a review committee to examine the selection criteria and scope of non-NET fellowships.

"We waited for hours as we were told that some officials from the Ministry will come out and interact with us. But no one came and when we refused to leave from there, we were detained," said Sunny Kumar, a protesting student.

"We wanted to present a memorandum of demands to them. We will not call of the protest until this review committee is scrapped which is no less than an eyewash," he added.

21:58   IS publishes photo of 'bomb that downed' Russian plane
Terror group Islamic State has published a photo in its official online English-language magazine Dabiq on Wednesday which is it said was the improvised bomb that brought down the Russian Metrojet Flight 9268 over Egypts Sinai Peninsula last month.

The magazine claimed that the plane was bombed using an improvised explosive device, hidden inside a can of Schweppes Gold soft drink. Next to the the can, the image showed what appeared to be a detonator and switch.

The terror group also published a photo of 'passports belonging to dead Russians obtained by the mujahideen'.

The magazine said that earlier, the terror group wanted to bomb a plane belonging to 'another nation participating in  American-led Western coalition' against it but the target was later changed to a Russian plane.

The IS claimed that the bomb was smuggled into the plane, without explaining how.

However, it was not possible to verify the authenticity of the photos and claims made by the group online.

Metrojet Flight 9268, en route to St Petersburg from Egypts Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport, crashed over Sinai peninsula on November 1 shortly after take-off, killing all 224 people on board.

21:08   UK court rules immigrant spouses must speak English
The UK Supreme Court today rejected a challenge against immigration rules requiring people to speak English before joining their spouses in Britain, a landmark ruling which could affect thousands of immigrants from countries like India.

The case was brought by two female British citizens whose husbands, from Yemen and Pakistan, want to come to the UK to be with their families.

However, under the UK's spouse visa rules for nationals outside the European Union, the men must learn a basic level of English and pass a test at an approved centre before being allowed to enter the country.

Saiqa Bibi and Saffana Ali claimed their husbands would not be able to pass a test before coming to the UK and argued that the men would have to learn computer skills and travel long distances to take their English tests, making it unfeasible.

The court was told that this meant their right to a private and family life under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) was being breached.

21:06   Copenhagen airport terminal reopened after evacuation
Danish police arrested two men at Copenhagen's Kastrup Airport today after they were overheard discussing a bomb in one of their bags, prompting the evacuation of the terminal, police said.

Terminal 3 was evacuated at around 12:00 pm (1100 GMT) after police were notified of the conversation. The terminal was reopened several hours later.

"They said that they were only joking with each other," police spokesman Steen Hansen told AFP.

"Apparently, they are friends, though one was going to Paris and the other was flying to Frankfurt (Germany)," he said.

The identity and nationality of the men was not disclosed.

19:11   150 youths under surveillance for leanings towards ISIS
Nearly 150 youths in the country are under the surveillance of security agencies for their alleged leanings towards dreaded terrorist group ISIS,
responsible for the recent terror attacks in Paris.

According to a report prepared by the intelligence agencies, the 150 people, mostly from South India, are believed to be attracted to the ISIS and sympathetic to the group's activities.

"Most of them are in regular contact with some ISIS activists through online. Hence, we have kept all them under surveillance of security forces," an official privy to the development said.
So far, a total of 23 Indians have gone to ISIS hold areas in Iraq-Syria to fight for the terrorist group. Of them six were killed while one returned home in Mumbai.

18:51   US Muslims face backlash after Paris attacks
Muslims around the US are facing backlash following the deadly attacks in Paris, including vandalism to mosques and Islamic centres, hate-
filled phone and online messages and threats of violence.

Advocacy leaders say they have come to expect some anti- Muslim sentiment following such attacks, but they now see a spike that seems notable, stirred by anti-Muslim sentiment in the media.

"The picture is getting increasingly bleak," said Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Washington, DC-based Council on American-Islamic Relations. "There's been an accumulation of anti-Islamic rhetoric in our lives and that I think has trigged these overt acts of violence and vandalism."

He said the rise in the level of anti-Muslim sentiment is reflected by some GOP presidential candidates, governors and others speaking out in opposition to the US accepting more Syrian refugees.

Hooper said the council is seeing an increase in anti- Muslim incidents since Friday's attacks in Paris that killed 129 people and wounded more than 350.

18:32   Censor Board says no to kisses, #SanskariJamesBond trends on Twitter
So, #SanskariJamesBond rules the trends on Twitter with the news that the Indian Censor Board has cleared the new James Bond movie, Spectre, with cuts. Four cuts to be precise -- two verbal and two visual.

The visual cuts are passionate kisses. While kisses between Daniel Craig and his co-star Monica Belucci are OK, it's the duration of the kisses that have got the axe. The length of the kisses were found to be excessive. And Mr Bond is also not allowed to abuse, which explains the verbal cuts. The CBFC probably thinks profanity does not suit gentlemen on his majesty's secret service.

Here's what Twitter come with on #SanskariJamesBond.

18:26   France will take in 30,000 refugees in next two years, promises Hollande
French President Francois Hollande addressing an assembly of mayors in Paris says the purpose of the raid on Saint Denis was "to neutralise terrorists who had links to the perpetrators of Friday's hideous crimes".

He said police endured "terrifying conditions" to carry out the raid. The president repeated his earlier message that France was at war against Islamic State militants.

President Hollande also praised the residents of Saint Denis for their courage and calmness during the police operation.

It is is still not clear whether Islamic State militant Abdelhamid Abaaoud has been arrested or killed in the Saint Denis operation.

"It is impossible to tell you who was arrested. We are in the process of verifying that. Everything will be done to determine who is who," Paris prosecutor Francois Molins says.

Hollande quashed suggestions of a link between the refugee crisis and Fridays attacks, announcing that France will accept 30,000 refugees in the next two years.

17:33   French opposition chief Sarkozy tears into Hollande
So, the French opposition is no different from our own.

French opposition leader Nicolas Sarkozy took aim at President Francois Hollande today, claiming he had failed to take adequate security measures after the jihadist attacks in January.

The latest attack on Friday night which left 129 people dead has increased political tensions just weeks ahead of regional elections, and the brief semblance of national unity has quickly frayed.

"How many victims must there be before we use the word (failings)? Were all the implications considered after the January attacks? The answer is no," Sarkozy asked in an interview with Le Monde newspaper.

"Too much time was wasted," said the man hoping to take another run at the presidency in 2017 polls. "Nor did the government draw all the right conclusions about the impact of our military intervention in Syria on internal security," said Sarkozy, who himself led a French intervention in Libya in 2011.

He said anti-terrorist measures should have been boosted immediately. The January attacks on Charlie Hebdo magazine, police and a Jewish supermarket killed 17 people, and there have been several foiled attacks since.

17:19   Police dog Diesel killed by terrorists in Paris raids
A police dog trained to search for explosives was killed when security forces raid several apartments in Paris on Wednesday in search of the suspected mastermind of last week's attacks that left more than 129 dead.

French officials identified the dog as Diesel, a seven-year-old Belgian Malinois, and said the animal was "killed by terrorists".

At least three people were killed, one of them a woman who blew herself up and seven more arrested during the raids in the northern Paris suburb of Saint-Denis by heavily armed police and soldiers early on Wednesday.

The security forces were looking for the suspected mastermind of Friday's attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud. At least five security personnel were injured in the operation. The official Twitter handle of the National Police posted: "Diesel, a seven-year-old Malinois, a police dog for #RAID, was killed by terrorists in the ongoing operation at #SaintDenis.

RAID is France's anti-terrorism police unit. Another tweet from the National Police said the dogs trained for assault and searching for explosives are indispensable for the operations of RAID.

Reuters reports that the raid at St Denis in suburban Paris has ended. If you've just joined us, here's what happened in the last five hours.

Gunfire and explosions shook the Paris suburb of St Denis early on Wednesday as French police surrounded an apartment where the Belgian Islamist militant suspected of masterminding last week's attacks in the French capital was believed to be holed up.

16:07   26/11: Headley told to appear face-to-face with LeT terrorist Abu Jundal
Just in: The TADA Court allows the Mumbai Police's plea to make Pakistani-American LeT terrorist David Headley an accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks case.

The Mumbai court issues summons to Headley and directs that he be produced via video-conferencing on December 10. The court wants Headley to be tried alongside Abu Jundal, a Lashkar-e-Toiba operative who was deported to India from Saudi Arabia in 2012

The Mumbai Police had made an application to the court to allow it to write to the US Department of Justice in this matter.

To establish the direct role of Pakistani state actors in the 26/11 terror attack, the Mumbai police want Headley, who is serving 35 years in jail in the United States, as a witness in the case. They want him in a video face-off with one of the attack handlers in Indian custody.

In 2010, Headley pleaded guilty to his role in 26/11, admitting he had carried out a reconnaissance of the targets for the Lashkar. Headley was questioned by a National Investigation Agency (NIA) team that flew to the United States. Under the plea bargain, Headley cannot face the death penalty and will not be extradited to India, Pakistan or Denmark. Which means he remains out of reach for Indian authorities.

15:33   Will Jaitley's wedding card diplomacy get GST bill passed?
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday drove over to Rahul Gandhi's 12 Tughlak lane bungalow to personally invite the Congress vice-president to his daughter Sonali's wedding.

Though there was an instantaneous buzz in Delhi media circles about the exact nature of the visit, insiders confirm that the meeting was in fact just a courtesy visit on Jaitley's part.

Reports says that the Jaitley family has been debating whether they should invite santoor maestro Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma or rapper Mika to perform at the wedding. The family is still undecided.

Meanwhile, as the winter session of Parliament is set to open on November 26, both the BJP and the Congress-led opposition have taken their positions on the bill.

Sources tell us that a compromise formula has been found with Jaitley likely to meet Rahul and Sonia Gandhi in the presence of Dr Manmohan Singh and Anand Sharma before Parliament actually begins.

The BJP Government is confident that the GST bill will be passed in the winter session, and the confidence apparently stems from Jaitley reaching out to the Opposition with a wedding card diplomacy.

14:48   Kiss, but not for too long, Censor Board cuts Spectre
And while on good looking men (and there aren't too many of those) the new James Bond movie, Spectre, has been cleared by the Censor Board Of Film Certification with a 'UA' certification... but only after four cuts, two verbal and two visual.

The visual cuts are the scenes that have long kisses; James Bond is also not allowed to abuse.

"Daniel Craig's kisses with his co-stars have been reduced by 50 percent," says a source. "The Censor Board had nothing against James Bond kissing but the length of the kisses were found to be excessive. We heard that Ranbir Kapoor's kissing in Tamashahas also been reduced by half. We wonder how the Censor Board decides how much kissing is enough."

14:07   Don't demonize widows, orphans, rebukes Obama on US hysteria over refugees
President Barack Obama has slammed US "hysteria" about the security risks posed by Syrian refugees as Republicans took steps aimed at freezing White House programs to resettle them in the wake of the Paris attacks. In an unusually fierce rebuke, Obama struck out at his political foes yesterday, accusing them of demonizing "widows and orphans."

The discovery of a Syrian passport near the body of one assailant in the Paris attacks that killed 129 people last Friday has stirred fears among US lawmakers and governors that jihadists are seeking to blend in with refugee masses in order to strike later.

"We are not well served when in response to a terrorist attack we descend into fear and panic," Obama said. "We don't make good decisions if it's based on hysteria or an exaggeration of risks," he added, speaking from Manila. "They are scared of widows and orphans coming into the United States of America."

His comments came as House Speaker Paul Ryan called for a "pause" in the Syrian resettlement scheme, joining more than half of state governors urging Obama to suspend the program and fully review the vetting process to ensure that would-be attackers do not slip into the country as refugees.

"Our nation has always been welcoming but we cannot let terrorists take advantage of our compassion," Ryan told reporters. "This is a moment where it's better to be safe than to be sorry."

Some Democrats shared similar views, including senior Senator Chuck Schumer who acknowledged it might be "necessary" to pause the program amid a review.

President Barack Obama has directed his administration to prepare to take in at least 10,000 Syrian refugees next year. The number reflects a "significant scaling up" of the US commitment to accept refugees from the war-torn country and to provide for their basic needs, White House press secretary Josh Earnest

It is unclear if other suspects are still in a flat in the area of the Rue de la Republique or the Rue Gabriel Pri in the commercial centre of the suburb where there are many shops and businesses. All are closed this morning and the centre of Saint Denis remains cordoned off.

11:30   Nation pays homage to Col Mahadik who died fighting terrorists in Kashmir
The nation on Wednesday paid tribute to Colonel Santosh Mahadik, who was martyred yesterday in a fierce gun battle with terrorists who had infiltrated from across the border and were hiding in the Manigah forests of Kupwara District in North Kashmir.

In the wreath laying ceremony for the slain Colonel Santosh Mahadik in Srinagar, all the officers and the jawans of the 41 RR paid their tributes to him.

Colonel Santosh Mahadik, who was the Commanding Officer (CO) of the 41 Rashtriya Rifles, breathed his last on Tuesday at the base hospital after being critically injured in the encounter.

The officer had made the supreme sacrifice while leading his troops in the operation from the front. Even as their CO breathed his last the troops, as an ode to his bravery and commitment, continued with the operation to hunt down while reinforcements were rushed in.

The Colonel was an officer of the elite 21 Para Special Forces and had volunteered to command a Rashtriya Rifles battalion in operations. He had already been decorated with a Sena Medal for gallantry exhibited in counter terrorist operations in the North east as part of Operation Rhino.

A tough and fearless soldier, he was known to be relentless in pursuit of terrorists and had many successful operations to his credit.

11:12   Bobby Jindal's statement on why he was withdrawing from presidential campaign
The other big news is that Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal announced he is suspending his presidential campaign yesterday and released the following statement:

"I cannot tell you what an honor it has been to run for President of the United States of America. My parents came to this country 45 years ago searching for freedom and a chance.

"When I was born, we lived in student housing at LSU, and never in their wildest dreams did they think their son would have the opportunity to serve as Governor of Louisiana or to run for President.

"They raised me to believe Americans can do anything, and they were right, we can. But this is not my time, so I am suspending my campaign for President.

"Going forward, I believe we have to be the party of growth and we can never stop being the party that believes in opportunity. We cannot settle for The Left's view of envy and division. We have to be the party that says everyone in this country - no matter the circumstances of their birth or who their parents are -- can succeed in America.

"One of the things I will do is go back to work at the think tank I started a few years ago - where I will be outlining a blueprint for making this the American century.

"We must show the way forward on growing our economy and winning the war against terror, and especially defeating radical Islam.

"I realize that our country is off on the wrong track right now. Everyone knows that, but don't forget, this is still the greatest country in the history of the world -- and every single one of us should start every day by thanking God that we are fortunate enough to be US citizens.

"Now is the time for all those Americans who still believe in freedom and American exceptionalism to stand up and defend it.  The idea of America -- the idea that my parents came here for almost a half a century ago - that idea is slipping away from us.  Freedom is under assault from both outside our borders and from within.  We must act now, we do not have a moment to spare."

08:35   US shouldn't sell nuclear armed version of F16 to Pak:Gingrich
With the Obama Administration contemplating selling F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan, the top Republican leadership has expressed concern over it and said the US should not sell nuclear armed fighter jets to Pakistan.

"I think that (sale of F-16 to Pakistan) has to be reviewed carefully. I do not think that the nuclear armed version (of F-16) should be sold. That would exacerbate things," Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the US House of Representatives told Indian-Americans on the occasion of launch of Republican Hindu Coalition.

"Let's be clear, there is a direct tie between what happened in Paris and what happened several years ago in Paris. There is a common enemy, there is a common threat. And it is only appropriate that the world's largest democracy in numbers and world's largest democracy in military power should be natural allies, fighting on behalf of civilisation," the powerful Republican leader said.

01:24   Paris attacker may have had accomplice on journey through Balkans: Reuters
Reuters reports: One of the Paris suicide attackers may have had an accomplice with him as he traveled through the Balkans to western Europe after entering Greece posing as a Syrian refugee, counter-intelligence and police sources say.

The assailant may also have reached Paris faster and more easily than expected because asylum seekers were rushed across some national borders at the height of the migration crisis in Europe this year to avoid bottlenecks after Hungary closed its borders, ironically to keep out suspected militants.

The man, who blew himself up near the Stade de France stadium in Friday's attacks that killed 129 people, has been identified from a Syrian passport found near his body as 25-year-old Ahmad al-Mohammad for the northwestern city of Idlib.

The passport could be false or stolen but its holder was registered as arriving alongside 198 refugees by boat from Turkey on Oct. 3 in Leros, a small picturesque Greek island.
