Apple kicked off an event expected to focus on Apple Watch with something else: an announcement that HBO's streaming service will debut on Apple TV and devices exclusively next month.

CEO Tim Cook welcomed HBO CEO Richard Plepler to the stage after discussing Apple's newest retail store in China, and the television executive announced that its HBO Now service will debut in April for $14.99 a month, with the first month free for customers who sign up early.

The service will originally be available exclusively on apps for Apple devices as well as Apple TV.
