23:39   Such violence does not happen in other advanced nations: Obama
A dejected US President Barack Obama today strongly condemned the "senseless murders" of nine Americans by a white gunman inside a historic black church, saying such type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries.

Members at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, had gathered for a prayer meeting when gunfire erupted in the 19th century building, raising racial tensions in the country that has recently witnessed a spate of killings of unarmed black men by white police officers.

The Charleston police identified the gunman as Dylann Roof of Lexington, South Carolina. He was later captured in North Carolina after a massive manhunt.

21:56   Cuban govt is expanding Wi-Fi access, making it cheaper
Cuba says it's expanding Internet access by adding Wi-Fi capacity to dozens of state-run Internet centres and more than halving the cost that users pay for an hour online.

The announcement published in today's edition of the newspaper Juventud Rebelde is the first significant expansion of the Internet in Cuba since President Barack Obama said on December 17 that the communist government had told him it would give its people more access as part of a historic detente between the Cold War enemies.

The spokesman for Cuba's state communications company told the newspaper that 35 government computer centers around the country would have Wi-Fi starting next month, and the price of one hour online would drop to USD 2 from USD 4.50 now.

That price remains unaffordable for most Cubans but the change would represent a significant improvement in access for many people.

Home Internet remains illegal for most of the Cuban population and online access at offices with Internet is highly limited and controlled.

20:59   Pope Francis: 'Revolution' needed to combat climate change
Pope Francis warned Thursday that a broad sweep of human activities -- from a blind worship of technology to an addiction to fossil fuels -- has brought the planet to the "breaking point," calling for a "cultural revolution" before the Earth is polluted beyond repair.

"Doomsday predictions," the Pope said in a sharply worded manifesto, "can no longer be met with irony or disdain."

Citing scientific consensus that we are witnessing a "disturbing warming" of the Earth's climate, Francis said that nothing short of "bold cultural revolution" could halt humanity's spiral into self-destruction.

"The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth," Francis said. "In many parts of the planet, the elderly lament that once beautiful landscapes are now covered with rubbish."

The Pope denounces big businesses, energy companies, short-sighted politicians, scurrilous scientists, laissez faire economists, callous Christians and myopic media professionals. Scarcely any area of society escapes his probing pen.

Francis' statement came Thursday in the form of an encyclical, a letter traditionally addressed from St. Peter's Square to the more than 1 billion Catholics across the globe. Derived from the Greek word for "circle," an encyclical is among the church's most authoritative teaching documents.

Special coverage: How 2 degrees are key to climate change

But Francis has set his sights far beyond the circle of his church. With an eye toward several key climate change summits scheduled for later this year, the Pope said his letter is addressed to "every person living on this planet."

"I would like to enter a dialogue with all people about our common home," Francis said.

And in April, Wylie said, Mitchell gave the painting to her husband as a wedding anniversary present. In exchange, Mitchell gave Matt a pair of speed bag gloves, similar to boxing gloves.

Now Matt, who authorities have also said had a sexual relationship with Mitchell, is on the run with fellow convicted murderer David Sweat. The huge manhunt for the two fugitives has stretched into its 13th day.

BJP patriarch L K Advani's concerns that "forces that can crush democracy are stronger" now and that Emergency like situation could emerge were seen by Congress as being aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi while AAP felt it is the "first indictment" of his politics.

As the remarks by the former deputy prime minister drew support from the opposition parties, the JD(U) said it should be considered seriously.

In the midst of a turf battle with the Centre on a range of issues, AAP leader and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wondered whether Delhi was the "first experiment" towards clamping Emergency while JD(U) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said his state was "facing" such situation on a daily basis".

Asserting that the BJP is not embarrassed by Sushma Swaraj helping Lalit Modi, Union Law Minister D V Sadananda Gowda today hit back at the Congress saying it was the previous UPA government that allowed the former IPL chief to "run away" from the country.

"As far as Sushma Swaraj is concerned, the party is not embarrassed. Doing something for a person who is suffering from cancer (Modi's wife) is not an issue to be discussed," he said.

Gowda said the BJP and government was behind Swaraj because she helped Modi out of humanitarian consideration and did not make any attempt to stall the proceedings against the former IPL chief, who is facing money laundering and other charges.

On the political firestorm over Vasundhara Raje, who allegedly backed Modi's immigration plea and face trouble over reports that the former IPL chief had invested Rs 11.63 crore in a firm owned by her son Dushyant Singh in 2008, Gowda said the party would "certainly" look into the matter.

15:09   Jurassic World's unintentionally very racist line is stunning audiences
Among the smorgasbord of dinosaurs that feature in this summer's biggest blockbuster, Jurassic World, is the little-known Pachycephalosaurus.

It is pronounced (pak-ee-sef-a-low-sor -us), and the lizard-like creature has a habit of escaping its enclosure, reports the Independent.

Now, this is a fast-paced action film so there is no time for such lengthy paleontological words, leading a character to at one point abbreviate and shout: "The Pachys are out of containment!"

Phonetically this sounds like a wildly racist slur (Pakis), and it has left some viewers squirming uncomfortably in their seats.

14:51   Did not seek, wasn't denied meeting with Amit Shah, says Raje
Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has neither sought an appointment with BJP chief Amit Shah nor has she been denied a meeting, her office today said amid claims that the party leadership had distanced itself in the wake of allegations against her in the Lalit Modi scandal.

In a statement in Jaipur, the Press Advisor of the Chief Minister's Office said that a few news channels showed that Raje desired an appointment from Shah but she was denied a meeting, which was "untrue".  It also refuted reports that 30 BJP MLAs went to Delhi in support of Raje.

The CMO advised media that they should confirm news contents before publishing or broadcasting them.

After it was alleged that Raje had supported scam-tainted former IPL chief Lalit Modi's immigration plea in Britain, she had yesterday called up Shah and explained her position. Sources had said Raje discussed with Shah the claims made by Lalit Modi and told the party chief that she did share family ties with the former IPL boss but there is no wrongdoing on her part.

They said Raje has sought to explain her ties between the two families and her friendship with Modi's wife but the documents being circulated in the media are "unverified and unsigned".

12:20   Rahul meets family of Punjab farmer who committed suicide
Rahul Gandhi today visited the family of a debt-ridden Punjab farmer who committed suicide last week, barely a month after he had met the Congress Vice President to apprise him of farmers' distress due to unseasonal rains. Rahul, who reached Daduwal village here this morning, consoled the family members of 60-year-old Surjit Singh and assured them of all support.

Surjit, who met Rahul in Sirhind on April 28, had committed suicide by consuming poison on June 10 after suffering heavy crop loss.

Today was the 'bhog' (a post-death ritual) ceremony. Rahul spent around 20 minutes with Surjit's family and other villagers. He did not interact with the media.

Local Congress MLA Kuljeet Singh Nagra accompanied Rahul. No senior party leader was present as the visit was kept low profile by Congress, party sources said. Surjit's family members said that Rahul assured them that he will take up the issue with the Centre.

They alleged that no one from the ruling Akali Dal and BJP had bothered to enquire about their plight. Surjit had briefed the Congress leader during his visit to three grain markets in Punjab recently to take stock of "tardy" wheat procurement in Punjab.

While explaining the farming community's distress to Rahul, he had said: "If the farmers' issues remain unresolved, many farmers might commit suicide." Rahul had visited Punjab shortly after he came back from his 57-day break from active politics.

11:49   Shiv Sena marks Golden jubilee tomorrow, strives to be 'no.1'
Having weathered many political storms since it was founded by Bal Thackeray to take up the cause of "regional identity" in 1966, Shiv Sena faces the challenge of positioning itself as "numero uno" in Maharashtra again as it turn 50 tomorrow.

"At present because of peculiar circumstances, Shiv Sena is playing second fiddle," Sena MP Sanjay Raut, who is also the executive editor of party mouthpiece 'Saamana', said in an apparent reference to former ally BJP upstaging it as the dominant partner.

"Shiv Sena has accepted the challenge to become numero uno again," he says as the party prepares for a year-long Golden jubilee celebrations.

The party was founded on June 19, 1966 in Mumbai. The 2017 Mumbai municipal elections will be a litmus test of the BJP-Sena alliance where a resurgent BJP is likely to assert itself in the seat sharing talks with Shiv Sena that has been ruling Asia's richest civic body for more than two decades.

The saffron alliance had split ahead of the 2014 state Assembly polls only to reunite to form the BJP-led government.

11:32   US governor calls church shootout 'senseless tragedy'
At least nine persons were killed today when an unidentified gunman opened fire inside a historic black church in Charleston in the US state of South Carolina, whose governor is Indian-American Nikki Haley.

Eight persons died inside the church, while another one was declared dead at a hospital. The police is searching for a suspect. "We're still gathering information so it's not the time yet for details," Charleston Mayor Joe Riley said.

"I will say that this is an unspeakable and heartbreaking tragedy in this most historic church, an evil and hateful person took the lives of citizens who had come to worship and pray together," he said in a statement.

A meeting was going on at the time of the shooting at the church at around 9 pm local time. South Carolina Governor Haley said her family was praying for the victims and families touched by the senseless tragedy.

It is one of the worst mass shootout in the history of the State. "While we do not yet know all of the details, we do know that we'll never understand what motivates anyone to enter one of our places of worship and take the life of another," she said in a statement.

"Please join us in lifting up the victims and their families with our love and prayers," she added. The police said it is looking for a clean-shaven slender white male in his 20s. No information has been released yet about the victims. A man was later seen being led away by police officers, but it was unclear whether he was the suspected gunman. Helicopters were seen hovering above the area.

11:03   Pressure mounts on Raje as BJP steers clear on Lalit Modi row
Pressure is mounting on Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje to resign after her name figured in the Lalit Modi controversy.

As per reports in newspapers and on TV channels, Raje has been asked by the top party leadership not to speak on the matter. Further, it has reportedly been conveyed to BJP spokespersons by senior party leaders not to back the embattled Rajasthan CM till all facts are ascertained.

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also gave an indication to this effect yesterday.

"We stand very firmly. There is no allegation of corruption or any impropriety. The people of India trust us," Prasad said in a press conference while replying to a question about the Sushma Swaraj-Lalit Modi row.

Reacting on Raje, he said the details would have to be looked into. "Vasundhara ji has spoken slightly yesterday... I am sure she will revert back," he said, adding: "There was, however, no signature on the documents shown yesterday (Tuesday)."

Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has claimed that Raje had supported his immigration plea in Britain.

As per documents released by the team of Lalit Modi, Raje had helped the scam-tainted former IPL chief's immigration in the UK by giving a written statement. She had, however, added a condition that her endorsement should not be disclosed to the Indian authorities.

The debt-ridden farmer who met Rahul in Sirhind on April 28 had committed suicide on June 10 after suffering heavy crop loss.

Surjit Singh, while explaining the farming community's distress to Rahul, had said: "If the farmers' issues remain unresolved, many farmers might commit suicide."

Rahul had visited Punjab shortly after he came back from his 57-day break from active politics.

10:12   I don't have the confidence Emergency cannot happen again: Advani
Ahead of the 40th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency on June 25, L K Advani, senior BJP leader, its founding father and now a member of its Margdarshak Mandal, has struck a note of caution.

India's political system is still to come to terms with the Emergency and a similar suspension of civil liberties could not be ruled out in the future, he said in an interview to The Indian Express.

"At the present point of time, the forces that can crush democracy, notwithstanding the constitutional and legal safeguards, are stronger," he said.

In the years since the Emergency in 1975-77, "I don't think anything has been done that gives me the assurance that civil liberties will not be suspended or destroyed again. Not at all," said Advani.

"Of course, no one can do it easily... But that it cannot happen again -- I will not say that. It could be that fundamental liberties are curtailed again."

10:03   Hardware snag in computers hits US visa services globally
A hardware problem in the State Department's computer system has hit America's visa issuing processes across the globe, an official has said.

"The Bureau of Consular affairs is facing some technical problems with the visa systems. This is a global issue, and we're working around the clock to fix it," State Department spokesman John Kirby told reporters.

In fact, more than 100 computer experts from both the private and public sectors across the US are working on this, he said.

"We don't expect that the system will be online before next week," he said.

The problem stems from a hardware failure. "That failure right now is preventing the Department from processing and transmitting the mandatory security-related biometric data checks at our embassies and consulates," Kirby said.

"Certainly we regret this inconvenience to travelers, recognize that this is causing hardship for those that are waiting for visas, and in some cases their family members or employers in the United States," he said.

Noting that it is very much a security issue, he said, "That's why we're taking it so seriously. So we're going to get it done, we're going to get it done right, and we're not going to rush as well."

08:58   Muslims worldwide to mark the start of Ramzan on Thursday
Muslims around the world will mark the start of Ramzan today, a month of intense prayer, dawn-to-dusk fasting and nightly feasts.

Muslims follow a lunar calendar and a moon-sighting methodology that can lead to different countries declaring the start of Ramzan a day or two apart.

However, this year religious authorities in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Indonesia and most other parts of the world announced based on their sightings of the moon that daily fasting would begin on Thursday.

Authorities in Pakistan have yet to announce the sighting of the moon.

During Ramzan, observant Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset for the entire month. A single sip of water or a puff of a cigarette is considered enough to invalidate the fast.

The fast is intended to bring the faithful closer to God and to remind them of the suffering of those less fortunate. Muslims often give to charities during the month, and mosques and aid organisations organise free meals for the public every night.

08:55   Congress to hit Jaipur's streets demanding Raje's sacking
Stepping up its offensive on the Lalit Modi controversy, the Congress party will today start an agitation in Rajasthan demanding the resignation of state Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje.

Party's chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala told reporters that the BJP leadership, "instead of defending the indefensible" needed to sack both Raje and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj without delay.

Swaraj and Raje are guilty of "violation" of various penal codes of IPC, Surjewala claimed, adding that the party would follow all options in the case. He was asked whether the party would take legal recourse.

"There is a clear-cut culpability on part of Swaraj and Raje under sections 107, 120-b, 166A, 172,173,177,217 of the Indian Penal Code. Raje also needs to be prima facie investigated for offences under Prevention of Corruption Act," he said.

08:55   DU admission: Sports quota fitness trials to begin today
The centralised fitness trials for admission to Delhi University's undergraduate courses through sports quota will begin today, with the varsity taking strict measures to avoid any "bias" and "ensure transparency" in the selection procedure.

Last year, the Hindu College had scrapped the extracurricular activities (ECA) trials following complaints of admission process being 'biased' and 'fraught' with malpractices.

To avoid any such hiccups this year, the varsity has revamped its policy for sports quota admissions. While it has decided to make the process centralised and conduct a common fitness test followed by sport-specific trials at the respective colleges, experts including Dronacharya and Arjuna awardees have been roped in to assess the candidates.

"The common fitness trial will begin tomorrow at the DU polo ground and will continue till June 20. The candidates can drop in on any of the days and appear for the trials, the results of which will be declared on the varsity website on June 22," Anil Kumar Kalkal, Secretary, DU Sports Council said.

The fitness test, which is only a qualifying one, holds no weightage in the final marks. While 50 marks are allotted for trials, the remaining 50 are for the certificates. Students will have to qualify either the two 50m runs for endurance or the 1,000-m run or walk (candidates' choice) and 'standing broad jump' in the fitness test.

03:27   Ramzan in America is the hardest and that's what makes it the best
Monied American Muslims are more and more inclined to travel eastwards for the holy month of Ramadan.

Mecca and Medina are fabulous this time of year, though hotel rates are skyrocketing through some very high roofs.

Some have chosen Istanbul, with its awesome Ottoman patrimony, or Malaysia, which is green, clean and'"well, I don't know. I've never been. I'm not even in that income bracket. But I bet I know why they go.

00:51   Maha to remove ambiguity in law for Marathi as state language
The state government will amend section 1 of the Maharashtra Rajyabhasha Act, 1964, to remove the existing ambiguity and clearly mention Marathi as the official language, Education Minister Vinod Tawde said here today.

He said unlike similar Acts enacted by states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu which have clearly declared Kannada, Telugu and Tamil as official state languages respectively, the Maharashtra law is ambiguous on this aspect.

"Section 2 (c) of the Act has vaguely mentioned that Marathi is the official state language. However, the amendment is necessary to make effective use of Marathi as official language of the state," he said. Tawde said the amendment will be moved in the forthcoming monsoon session of state legislature in July.

"Those who stay in Maharashtra or do business in the state should have the knowledge of Marathi. Although the state has adopted Marathi as the language of official business, the compulsory enforcement of it is the matter of persuasion and determination," Tawde said.
