21:37   Manmohan Singh examined by CBI in coal scam
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is said to have been examined by CBI in the coal block allocation case relating to Hindalco but neither he nor the agency was willing to confirm it.

According to informed sources, a team of CBI officials "examined" the former Prime Minister at his residence two days ago ahead of the filing of status report before a special CBI court by January 27.

Singh's examination was in connection with a coal scam case relating to allocation of Talabira II block to Hindalco when he was also holding the portfolio of Coal and in pursuance of the court's December 16 order.

When contacted, CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad refused to confirm or deny the development while an aide of the former Prime Minister denied it.

The sources said Singh was examined about the developments which took place in the Ministry of Coal as well as the PMO after industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla had written two letters dated May 7, 2005 and June 17, 2005 to the then PM requesting for allocation of Talabira-II coal block to Hindalco.

CBI had received a wrap on its knuckles as Special Judge Bharat Parashar had refused to accept the closure report in the case observing that it would be "appropriate" that the then Coal Minister (Singh) be "first examined" regarding various aspects of the matter.

21:35   No of MBBS seats to go up by 2,500
Around 2,500 MBBS seats are to be added to various medical colleges across the country, after an empowered committee of the health department approved the raise.

The committee, headed by Health Secretary Lov Verma, in its recently held meeting, approved raising the number of MBBS seats by around 2,500, and also starting new colleges at various hospitals, according to the minutes of the meeting released by Health Ministry said.

The new seats will come up at new and existing government colleges.

The decision comes in the wake of the number of undergraduate seats going down by 1,170 in 2014-15 after the Medical Council of India (MCI) rejected proposal of around 3,920 seats and approved only 2,750 seats.

The MCI's decision had invited sharp critisism from the then Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and the new addition is likely to provide relief to aspiring MBBS students.

The committee approved 100 new seats each for G B Pant Hospital at Port Blair and district hospitals in Kohima, Almora, Churu, Dungarpur, Datia and Khandwa.

It also approved proposals to increase number of seats at existing medical colleges in Patiala and Amritsar in Punjab and Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Madurai in Tamil Nadu. It also approved increase in existing seats in Haldwani, Bhopal, Gwalior, Rewa, Indore, Udaipur and Kota.

21:05   Jethmalani vents anger in SC over govt 'inaction' on blackmoney
Expelled BJP member Ram Jethmalani today vented his anger in the Supreme Court against the NDA government on the black money issue, expressing displeasure that a draft legislation prepared by him and sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not been acted upon.

The veteran lawyer's outburst came soon after a bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu dictated the order on his petition on the black money matter.

Jethmalani sought its permission and expressed anguish over the efforts of the government in the last six months to bring back black money stashed in foreign banks.

"It is my sense of total displeasure that these proceedings are becoming adversarial. I am not here for recovering my money, but the money of the nation. Without legislation nothing will happen," he said.

"The SIT told me to draft a legislation. I sent it to the SIT and to the Prime Minister. It is a matter of regret that I have not heard one word from the Prime Minister. He merely passed it on to the Finance Ministry.

"I want to know from this government whether they want to have a legislation or not. It will be a part of legislation or not or will I have to make a public outcry," he said.

18:53   Police to probe IPL angle in Sunanda Pushkar's death
After a round of questioning of Shashi Tharoor, Delhi Police today made it clear that it will probe if IPL angle was related to the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar.

Delhi Police Chief B S Bassi said the former Union Minister was "cooperative" during four-hour-long questioning last night. He did not rule out his further questioning.

Asked about the future course of action in the case, he said the Special Investigating Team (SIT) will analyse what Tharoor had told them and then take further action.

On whether the SIT was looking into the IPL angle, he said, "Whatever has been said about IPL will be relevant and will definitely be asked about" as the objective is to reach to the bottom of the truth.

Police sources said other than various matters that could be related to the incident, 58-year-old Tharoor was questioned about the IPL controversy.

Sunanda (52) was found dead in a five-star hotel room here on January 17 last year.

Delhi Police recently filed a case of murder in the case.

The IPL controversy broke in early 2010 when Tharoor was Minister of State for External Affairs. There were allegations that he had "misused" his office to ensure that Rs 70 crore, which was equivalent to 19 per cent equity in IPL Kochi franchise Rendezvous Sports, was paid to Sunanda. Sunanda, who was a friend and yet to become Tharoor's wife at that time, had refuted allegations of any wrongdoing.

She had also denied that she was acting as the front person to Tharoor in the Kochi IPL franchise.

12:40   DON'T breed like rabbits, Pope tells Catholics
Pope Francis has said that good Catholics do not have to breed "like rabbits", defending the Church's stance on artificial contraception and appealing to the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics to practise responsible parenting.

Speaking to journalists on his flight back from the Philippines, the pope said that he once asked a mother of seven children who was pregnant with her eighth if she wanted to "leave behind seven young orphans".

"She said, 'I trust in God.' But God gave us the means to be responsible," the pope said.

"Some think, and excuse the term, that to be good Catholics, they must be like rabbits." Francis said creating new life was "part of the sacrament of marriage" and in Manila strongly defended his predecessor Paul VI's outlawing of artificial contraception for Catholics in 1968.

Following the church's teachings did not mean "Christians should have children one after the other", he said.

His comments came at the end of a trip to the Philippines, the Catholic Church's Asian stronghold, which last year passed a family planning law after a 15-year battle by the Church to block state-sanctioned contraception. The law allows the government to begin distributing free contraceptives to millions of poor Filipinos.

"My mind wandered to my undergraduate days. I had found an untouched Hindi translation of Rajni Kothari's book, Politics in India, in the library of my college, Khalsa College, Sri Ganganagar.

"Despite its tough prose, made worse by a heavy Sanskritic translation, the book was a breath of fresh air. I didn't quite understand the complex argument. But somehow, the book taught me to think about politics in a radically new way. It also made me decide to study politics."
