23:42   Kabuls conundrum over Pakistan mars peace talks
The renewed prospects of Afghan peace talks got upstaged no sooner than President Ashraf Ghani returned to Kabul on Thursday after a 3-day visit to Pakistan that had marked an improvement of relations between the two countries.

Ghani told the media in Kabul that serious reconciliation talks will begin soon with the Taliban in the next few weeks and, Inshah Allah, they will reach a conclusion.

He said Afghan government will embrace those Taliban factions that desire reconciliation and at the same time fight the intransigent, irreconcilable factions.

In his words, Pakistan also has agreed to join hands and use all means, including military force, in this fight. Meanwhile, unnamed Pakistani officials hinted in Islamabad that reconciliation talks could begin as early as next week.

In a statement in the Pakistan National Assembly on Friday, advisor on foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz also acknowledged that the most important subject during the sideline meetings at the Heart of Asia conference last week in Islamabad was to explore ways and means of improving Afghanistan -- Pakistan relations and facilitating the resumption of stalled Afghan reconciliation process.

They are also under suspicion of violating Swiss law prohibiting "groups like Al-Qaeda, Islamic State and similar organisations", it added.
Several Swiss media reported yesterday that two people had been arrested in the Geneva region and that traces of explosives were found in their car but the authorities only confirmed the development today.

22:24   Final draft of climate deal agreement unveiled in Paris
After years of buildup and weeks of negotiations, diplomats issued a final draft of a climate change agreement Saturday that the French foreign minister described as "fair ... and legally binding."

If adopted, the agreement would set an ambitious goal of halting average warming at no more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial temperatures -- and of striving for a limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius if possible.

World leaders hailed the draft as a milestone in the battle to keep Earth a planet that is hospitable to human life. But there is still a mountain to climb.

The draft now goes to government ministers. Delegates from 196 parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change will be asked later in the day to adopt or reject the proposal.

A car bomb exploded today in a government-held neighbourhood in the central Syrian city of Homs, killing at least 16 people and wounding dozens, state media and an opposition monitoring group said.
State news agency SANA said the blast wounded more than 100 people while the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said dozens were hurt.

The Observatory said an army colonel, a policeman and woman were among the 16 killed in Homs. Homs Governor Talal Barazzi said most of the 16 dead were women and children, adding that 15 of the wounded were treated at hospitals and released.
Today's blast came a few days after hundreds of rebels and their families left Waer, the last opposition-held neighbourhood of Homs, as part of a local truce that will bolster government control of the city.
The Observatory said trucks carrying aid entered Waer today as part of the truce.

20:26   Obama tells Americans not to turn against Islam
Amid increasing anti-Muslim rhetoric in the aftermath of the San Bernardino terror attack that killed 14 people, President Barack Obama today told his countrymen to remain vigilant against any suspicious
activities and appealed to them not to turn against Islam.
In his weekly web and radio address to the nation, Obama said Americans should not turn against one another by letting this fight be defined as a war between America and Islam, which is what Islamic State (IS) wants and only serves to undermine the national security.
He praised Americans who have come together to reaffirm the core values and stand up, forcefully, for freedom of religion.
"In the wake of the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, I know a lot of Americans are asking -- 'what can I do?' First, as always, we have to stay vigilant," Obama said.

"If you see something that seems suspicious, say something to law enforcement. Over the years, plots have been uncovered because someone saw something and spoke up," he said.

15:55   Is National Herald case an internal sabotage?
Even as Rahul Gandhi continues to maintain that the legal procedure in the National Herald case is being 'driven by the Prime Minister's Office', sources close to the Congress vice president have said that the Gandhi scion believes that the case is an internal sabotage, masterminded by none other than former law minister Hans Raj Bhardwaj.

Sources believe that Bhardwaj wished to seek revenge against the Gandhis and passed on the papers to Swamy who then filed a case in court in 2013.

02:56   US military college suspends cadets over 'KKK uniforms'
A prestigious military college in the United States suspended eight students and launched an investigation after photos emerged of cadets posing in all-white outfits reminiscent of the Ku Klux Klan, an official said today.

Hillary Clinton also weighed in on The Citadel college, where the Confederate battle flag flies, tweeting: "Symbols of hate create more hate. It's time for the Confederate flag to come down at The Citadel."

The flag was the focus of renewed impassioned debate in June after a suspected white supremacist shot dead nine black churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina- the same city where The Citadel is based.

The cadets were pictured dressed in white and with white pillow cases over their heads with two holes for the eyes, in haunting similarities to the infamous Ku Klux Klan, a white hate group.

"Eight cadets have been suspended and went home this morning," Citadel spokeswoman Kim Keelor told AFP.

02:56   US, Cuba renew direct postal service after 52 years: Havana
The United States and Cuba have agreed to restore direct postal service 52 years after severing it at the height of the Cold War, the Cuban foreign ministry said today.

It said the "pilot plan" would take effect "in the coming weeks" and then be rolled out permanently.

The news comes six days from the first anniversary of the historic announcement by Presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro that the two countries would renew diplomatic ties after more than half a century.

The two nations reopened embassies in each other's capitals in July.

The United States and Cuba broke off direct postal service in 1963, the year after Washington slapped a full embargo on Havana that exists to this day, despite Obama's calls for Congress to lift it.

Currently, letters and packages must pass through third countries, delaying delivery by up to a month.

The two countries had opened talks in 2009 on restoring postal service and direct flights.

02:55   Paris deal likely to be weak, inequitable: CSE
Paris climate deal could be a "weak, unambitious and inequitable" accord as most of the crucial components like mitigation and financial commitments are likely to be not legally binding, an Indian green body today said, a day after the new draft negotiating text was released.

Asserting that the issue of fair share in the carbon budget must be a part of the text, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) said that if that is not done, equity will not be operationalised and a climate change regime will be created which is built on "intolerance towards voice of powerless" and will further "climate change apartheid".

It also said that France being the host of the conference, needs to think whether it wants to become part of this kind of regime.

Noting that the text draft does not have a mention of fair share of carbon budget, CSE director General Sunita Narain said that there should be a clear reference of it in the final text.
