Rajya Sabha clears bill to protect rights of transgenders

In a significant step towards the welfare of the transgender community, the Rajya Sabha unanimously passed a private member's bill to protect the rights of the community. The private member bill provides for the formulation and implementation of a comprehensive national policy to ensure overall development and welfare of transgenders by the State. The bill, moved by DMK member Tiruchi Siva, is the first private members bill to be passed in 46 years. The bill will now go to Lok Sabha where it will be debated and put to vote.
