22:44   British Indian surgeon murdered in Syria: UK court rules
An Indian-origin British surgeon found dead in a prison in Syria last year was murdered, an inquest into his death at the Royal Courts of Justice in London concluded today.

Shah Abbas Khan, a 32-year-old father-of-two from south London, died on December 16, 2013 while in custody in Damascus. His family had claimed he was murdered but the Syrian government had maintained he was found hanging in a jail cell.

The jury of seven men and four women concluded that the medical cause of Khan's death was "unascertained", but found his killing unlawful. "Dr Khan was deliberately and intentionally killed without any legal justification," said the jury forewoman.

The UK foreign office demanded that the Syrian regime give Khan's family the answers they have been demanding and said the UK government will consider its next steps.

"The foreign office fully supported the Coroner's inquest and we will now consider next steps," Tobias Ellwood, Foreign Office Minister for the Middle East, said in a statement. "

Khan's imprisonment without consular access was unacceptable. The Foreign Office consistently sought access and pressed for his detention to be reviewed including through ministers and international partners.

The Syrian regime ignored these approaches. It can no longer do so. His family deserve answers and those responsible for Khan's death should be brought to justice.

08:25   Gunman in Canada attack prepared video of himself
The gunman who shot and killed a soldier at Canada's national war memorial and then stormed Parliament before he was gunned down had prepared a video recording of himself that police say shows he was driven by ideological and political motives, police has said.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commissioner Bob Paulson said in a statement yesterday they have "persuasive evidence that Michael Zehaf-Bibeau's attack was driven by ideological and political motives."

A detailed analysis of the video was being conducted and Paulson said they cannot release the video at this time.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has called Wednesday's shooting a terror attack, and the bloodshed raised fears that Canada is suffering reprisals for joining the US-led air campaign against Islamic State extremists in Iraq and Syria.

Police are investigating Zehaf-Bibeau's interactions with numerous individuals in the days leading up to the attack and whether they could have contributed or facilitated it.

Paulson said a knife carried by Zehaf-Bibeau was taken from his aunt's property in Mont Tremblant, Quebec, and they're looking into how he got the rifle. Paulson called it an old, uncommon gun that police suspect he could have also hidden on the property.

NDTV reports: The Centre will disclose the names of three persons who stashed away black money in foreign banks to the Supreme Court on Monday.

The account holders are not political personalities and the names will be part of an affidavit the government will file, sources told NDTV.

The Centre will disclose more names of account holders to the court as and when the prosecution in the case begins, the sources added.

The Supreme Court, based on a petition by noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani, has created a special committee to look at how to recover black money. But the government had told the Supreme Court that it could not reveal the names received from other countries as it would violate the tax treaties with those countries.
