Crowds of protesters who filled Hong Kong's streets with demands for more democracy thinned dramatically Tuesday after student leaders and the government agreed to hold talks in the increasingly frustrated city.

Just a couple of days after tens of thousands of demonstrators thronged the city's streets, only a few hundred protesters were scattered across the three main protest areas for much of the day.

But the six-lane highway that cuts through the heart of Hong Kong's business district remained blocked by demonstrators, once again snarling traffic and angering many commuters.

18:43   India puts on hold flag meet with Pak as ceasefire violations continue
In the wake of cross-border firing in Jammu and Kashmir, India has decided to put on hold the proposal for a flag meet with Pakistan. The BSF  has been told to wait for Pakistan to make the first move.

Top military officials of India and Pakistan today discussed the ceasefire violations along the Line of Control and International Border but failed to address the issue.

Officials of the Directorate Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) talked over the hotline for five minutes during which both sides accused each other of violating the ceasefire, Army sources said.

They said the telephonic talk did not take place between the Director Generals of Military Operations -- Lt General rank officer from Indian side and Maj General rank officer from Pakistani side -- but lower rank officials, in deviation from the regular practice.

Six persons have been killed and 50 others including BSF jawan injured in Pakistani shelling and firing along LoC and IB in Jammu and Poonch districts in the ceasefire violations this month.

The Indian side is giving a befitting reply to the ceasefire violations by Pakistan, the army sources said.

The sources said there have been 125 incidents of ceasefire violation along the LoC and the International Border and 17 terrorists have been killed by the Indian security forces while they were trying to infiltrate into the Indian territory.

18:26   AIADMK workers celebrate Amma's 'bail' a little too early
The reports about the Special Public Prosecutor not objecting to bail for AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa in Karnataka High Court triggered celebrations among party workers across Tamil Nadu today before disappointment struck them following news of rejection of her plea for the relief.

AIADMK workers and Jayalalithaa supporters, who were waiting with bated breath for the high court verdict on their "Amma", believed the grant of bail to be true as the "news" was flashed by the party-backed Jaya TV as also by several other channels and news portals.

However, soon after they learnt that the high court has rejected the bail, angry party workers sat on the road leading to Poes Garden, Jayalalithaa's residence, and raised slogans, demanding her release.

Several news channels and portals had reported that the 66-year old AIADMK general secretary and three other accused have been granted conditional bail in the Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate wealth case, only to retract it after the court rejected the plea.

Crestfallen workers of ruling AIADMK resumed their stir to express solidarity with Jayalalithaa.

In the hill resort town of Udhagamandalam, about 100 AIADMK supporters blocked a Mysore-bound Karnataka government owned transport corporation bus at the bus stand on hearing about the rejection of the bail.

Police personnel rushed to the spot, dispersed them and managed to take out the bus to safety, police said. AIADMK workers also stopped several vehicles bearing Karnataka registration numbers at tourist spots such as Botanical Gardens and Boat house and protested, police said.

16:48   #WakeUpCall -- the new Ice Bucket challenge?
A new charity internet craze is set to sweep the web. Sporting that crusty-eyed, wild-haired 'just woken up' look, The #WakeUpCall -- in aid of Unicef -- morphs elements of two of the most successful viral campaigns of recent times -- the #nomakeupselfie and the Ice Bucket Challenge.

Unicef have thrown down the gauntlet by encouraging people to post snaps or videos of themselves online within moments of waking up. Unicef hopes to raise millions for Syria by encouraging people to post pictures and video of themselves moments after they have woken up

Like the #nomakeupselfie it's set to offer a rare glimpse at celebrities minus their slap and give the wider world a sneak peek at the real lives of the rich.

Unicef are banking on the craze taking off -- especially as both men and women can get stuck in.

Actor and presenter Stephen Fry and celebrity Jemima Khan (pictured) have already posted pics on Twitter.

In footage from a rally a few days ago, Thackeray, the chief of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, is seen saying, "...this election vote for dhanush...err..rail engine."

15:51   Scientist who discovered Ebola says the real fear lies in India
"There will certainly be Ebola patients from Africa who come to us in the hopes of receiving treatment. And they might even infect a few people here who may then die.

"But an outbreak in Europe or North America would quickly be brought under control.

"I am more worried about the many people from India who work in trade or industry in west Africa.

"It would only take one of them to become infected, travel to India to visit relatives during the virus's incubation period, and then, once he becomes sick, go to a public hospital there.

"Doctors and nurses in India, too, often don't wear protective gloves. They would immediately become infected and spread the virus."

10:02   Phelps banned for six months, no 2015 worlds
Michael Phelps, the 18-time Olympic swim champion arrested last week for drink driving, was banned for six months by USA Swimming and dropped from the 2015 World Championships.

Monday's punishments came six days after Phelps was apprehended by police in his hometown of Baltimore and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, excessive speed and crossing the center line while driving inside a tunnel.

On Sunday, Phelps said on Twitter that he would be taking a break from swimming and "take some time away to attend a program" for treatment of unspecified personal issues.

In announcing sanctions against the Olympic superstar, USA Swimming executive director Chuck Wielgus said Phelps' actions required "significant consequences."

"Michael has publicly acknowledged the impact of his decisions, his accountability especially due to his stature in the sport and the steps necessary for self-improvement," Wielgus said.

"We endorse and are here to fully support his personal development actions."

The discipline meted out, which includes forfeiture of Phelps' funding from the federation for six months, is based on USA Swimming rules that prohibit conduct "detrimental to the image or reputation" of USA Swimming or the sport.

08:55   Karnataka HC to hear Jayalalithaa's bail plea today
The Karnataka high court will hear former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa's plea seeking immediate bail and suspension of her four-year sentence in the disproportionate assets case.

Bracing up for the anticipated entry of AIADMK supporters and leaders into the city from the Hosur border, the police have tightened security in and around the high court and Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, where Jayalalithaa is lodged since September 27.

The High Court vacation bench had on October 1 deferred till October 7 pleas of Jayalalithaa and her close aide Sasikala and her relatives VN Sudhakaran and Ilavarasi, who were also convicted in the case, to be taken by a regular bench after the end of Dasara vacation.

Section 144 of the CrPC has been clamped within 1 km radius of the High Court and Parapanna Agrahara Prison.

Jayalalithaa's counsel Ram Jethmalani had on October 1 pleaded for suspension of the sentence pending appeal and for her release on bail, which was opposed by Special Public Prosecutor Bhavani Singh, who was the SPP in the Special Court in the disproportionate assets case.

In his verdict on September 27, Special Judge John Michael D'Cunha had convicted Jayalalithaa, sentencing her to four years imprisonment, and slapped a staggering fine of Rs 100 crore in the corruption case. Sasikala, Sudhakaran, disowned foster son of the former chief minister, and Ilavarasi were also sentenced to four years in jail, besides a fine of Rs 10 crore each.

In her petitions seeking immediate bail and challenging her sentence, Jayalalithaa has maintained that the charges of amassing wealth against her were false and that she had acquired property through legal means.

08:51   NYT apologises for Mangalyaan cartoon
The New York Times has apologised after publishing a cartoon on India's Mars Mission following readers' complaints that it mocked India.

The cartoon showed a farmer with a cow knocking at the door of a room marked Elite Space Club where two men are reading a newspaper on India's feat, BBC reported.

The cartoon was carried Sep 28 with an article titled India's Budget Mission to Mars.

After a "large number of readers" complained about the cartoon, Andrew Rosenthal, editorial page editor of the New York Times, wrote in a Facebook post: "The intent of the cartoonist, Heng Kim Song, was to highlight how space exploration is no longer the exclusive domain of rich, Western countries."

"Mr Heng, who is based in Singapore, uses images and text - often in a provocative way - to make observations about international affairs. We apologise to readers who were offended by the choice of images in this cartoon."

Rosenthal said Heng "was in no way trying to impugn India, its government or its citizens".

08:50   Stop government's wasteful newspaper ads: SC report
NDTV reports: Governments must be seriously hemmed in with guidelines for how many newspaper ads they can place and the ads must not "glorify politicians in power", says a committee appointed by the Supreme Court.

NDTV accessed the detailed report of the committee, which was created in April this year after a group of non-profits urged the top court to stop governments from misusing taxpayers' money.

The case alleged that governments at the Centre and in states use these ads to "promote private interests."

The three members of the committee say that governments must decide in advance on a list of personalities whose birth or death anniversaries will be marked with ads.
