Additional troops of para-military forces are being deployed in the district to avoid any untoward incident.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee's national ambitions today suffered a setback with anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare ruling out support to her in the Lok Sabha elections, making a U-turn on the issue.

Hazare, who caused a huge embarrassment for Banerjee two days ago by skipping a 'joint' rally here, said "some people who deceive" had got associated with her which made it difficult for him to support her.

He was responding to questions on whether he would support Banerjee for the Prime Ministership even after the rally fiasco, which he blamed on misleading information.

"No. Now, some such people, who deceive me, have got associated with Mamata Banerjee which makes it difficult for me to support her," the social activist asserted.

He said he had told Banerjee to stop using his name in Trinamool's advertisement campaign for the polls. This marks a U-turn as he has been endorsing Banerjee for Prime Ministership.

16:50   LS polls show rise in number of candidates losing deposit
Successive Lok Sabha elections have shown a rise in number of candidates forfeiting their deposit, but this has not stopped people from throwing their hat in the electoral ring.

Election Commission rules say that if a candidate fails to get a minimum of one-sixth of the total valid votes polled, the deposit goes to the treasury.

A candidate contesting from a general seat has to deposit Rs 25,000 as security deposit.

The amount is Rs 12,500 for candidates contesting from reserved seats. In First Lok Sabha Elections in 1951-52, almost 40 per cent or 745 out of 1874 candidates forfeited their deposits.

Since then, almost all Lok Sabha elections have witnessed upward trend in candidates losing their deposits.

16:27   Why Chidambaram wants a RS seat from Assam or J-K, NOT Karnataka
The Congress is expected to release its list of Lok Sabha candidates for the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Delhi and Tamil Nadu today.

Reports suggest that Finance Minister P Chidambaram is not keen to contest in the Lok Sabha polls and is keen on taking the Rajya Sabha route. Chidambaram is likely to get elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, but he has to brace himself for the political ramifications arising out of the Cauvery water dispute.

Every June-July the agitation from Tamil Nadu over the Cauvery water dispute will be at its peak. PC has to go with Karnataka and thereby offend Tamil Nadu. Hence, PC is believed to have told Sonia Gandhi that he would prefer a candidature from either Assam or Jammu and Kashmir.

12:01   Omar: AAP wouldn't exist without blanket coverage by media
J-K chief minister Omar Abdullah tweeted criticizing Arvind Kejriwal's attack on the media. "I really don't get AAP & Arvind Kejriwal's criticism of the media. But for the blanket coverage he has received AAP wouldn't exist today."

The AAP leader has alleged that the whole media is "sold" and "heavy amounts" have been paid to promote the BJP's prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi.

But he later denied having made the accusations against the media after his remarks came under attack from the Congress, the BJP and the CPI.

"Since the last one year, we have been told that Modi is here, Modi is there. Since one year, Modi has also been saying that. Even some TV channels have been saying that 'Ram Rajya' has come and corruption has vanished... Why did they do it? Because money has been paid to TV channels. Heavy amounts have been paid to promote Modi," Kejriwal alleged in a video aired by a TV channel.

"Around 800 farmers have committed suicide in Gujarat in the past 10 years, but none of the channels showed it," he alleged and added that farmers have sold their land to a company for just "one rupee but even this has not been shown by any channel".

11:27   Chinese see Uighur hand in Malaysian plane mystery
Amid global speculation on what exactly caused Malaysia Airlines flight MH 370 to jump radar contact and disappear, an ugly suspicion has taken roots in China that it could be the handiwork of Uighur terrorists.

If this turns out to be correct, it would be the biggest attack by Uighurs on Chinese interests.

Over two-thirds of the passengers in the missing plane were Chinese. As yet there is little to suggest that it could be an act of terror since it's not yet clear where or how the plane went down. While stolen passports initially hinted at a possible terror angle, the holders are believed to be Iranian asylum seekers rather than terrorists.  Read more

US officials helping in efforts to locate a missing Malaysian plane today said they are shifting their search to the Indian Ocean region amid reports that the aircraft could have flown for several hours before it disappeared nearly a week ago.

"And we are consulting with international partners about the appropriate assets to deploy," he said without specifying the nature of the new information.

The move to expand the search to the Indian Ocean came after the US' defence and aviation experts said that there was a significant probability of the plane to be at the bottom of the Indian Ocean.

10:47   Committed to work within framework of Constitution: Kejriwal
Labelled as an "anarchist" by his critics, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal has stated that his party is committed to function within the framework of Indian Constitution.

Responding to the charge of being an anarchist leading elements with diverse ideologies lacking cohesiveness, Kejriwal said, "We can have people amongst us wedded to different ideologies but we are committed to the framework of the Indian Constitution."

The former Delhi chief minister said he would not like to be bound by ideological confines and does not believe in "isms" denoting political leanings.

"I am influenced by (Mahatma) Gandhi. I follow the humanist ideology. We want to empower people and change the system which is based on political corruption," he said in an interview to a Marathi news channel telecast yesterday.

Replying to questions, Kejriwal said he was earlier an atheist (person who does not believe in God) but had become a "believer" since the last three years as he felt that his course had been chartered by the divine will.

"I would not have imagined even in my wildest dream that I would quit my income tax job. I never thought of fighting elections. This is all God's will. There is a power that guides you," he said, adding that he believes in the Bhagwad Gita philosophy that professes doing one's ordained duty without expecting fruit of action.

"Gita is not just faith but is a science," Kejriwal felt.

10:29   Media is sold out on Modi, will jail them: Kejriwal
Arvind Kejriwal has once again launched a scathing attack on media, saying that they have been paid "heavy amount" to promote Narendra Modi. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief said he will send media to jail when his party comes to power.

Speaking at a fund-raising event on Thursday evening, Kejriwal said, "For the last one year our minds have been filled with Modi, Modi... Modi and some TV channels have been saying that corruption has ended, ram rajya has come, this has happened, that has happened; why? Because money has been paid, TV channels have been paid a heavy amount to promote Modi."

"800 farmers have committed suicide in Gujarat in the last 10 years, this no one will tell; Adani has been sold land at Rs 1, this no channel will tell. Arvind has taken security, he has not taken security, has taken Z category, Y category, arre bhaad main gayi teri security, they will not reveal the truth about Modi," Kejriwal said.

Threatening action against media, he said, "This time, the whole media has sold itself, it is a big conspiracy. If we ever form the government, we will probe this and everybody, including media personnel, would be sent to jail".

10:06   Sriramulu to return to BJP today
Karnataka leader BS Sriramulu is all set to rejoin the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday, a day after the party provisionally allotted him a Lok Sabha ticket from Bellary.

Sriramulu, a former minister, was a close aide of jailed mining baron Janardhan Reddy. He had quit the BJP and formed his own BSR Congress following differences with the party leadership.

However, he is now returning to the BJP fold and will contest from Bellary -- the constituency is currently held by his sister Shantha.

To facilitate his re-entry into the BJP, Sriramulu is quitting the BSR Congress and is also resigning as MLA from the Bellary Rural seat.

The BJP has not yet approved the merger with BSR Congress after top leaders, including Sushma Swaraj, openly expressed apprehensions against it.

But Sriramulu hopes the merger, too, will happen soon.

10:00   Sensex down 144 points in early trade
Extending yesterday's losses, the benchmark BSE Sensex fell over 144 points in early trade today on sustained selling by funds, tracking weak global cues amid rising tension over Ukraine and signs of a slowdown in China.

The 30-share index, which had lost 81.61 points yesterday, fell by another 144.44 points, or 0.66 per cent, to 21,630.17 in early trade with all the sectoral indices led by banking, realty and metals trading in the negative zone, with losses up to 1.31 per cent.

The broader Nifty of the National Stock Exchange too moved down by 36.05 points, or 0.56 per cent, to 6,457.05.

Brokers said continued selling by foreign funds and retail investors largely in tune with a weakening trend on other Asian bourses on dismal Chinese economic data and overnight losses on Wall Street on flaring Ukraine tensions mainly dampened the sentiment here.

09:40   New York gas blast death toll rises to eight
Rescuers scouring the rubble of two Manhattan apartment buildings levelled in a gas explosion found the body of an eighth victim on Thursday, nearly 36 hours after the disaster.

An unspecified number of people remain missing after Wednesday's building collapse in East Harlem, which sparked inevitable reminders for some New Yorkers of the 9/11 terror attacks in 2001 that brought down the Twin Towers.

The New York Police Department told a news agency that five women and three men were killed, and 68 others injured.

Earlier Thursday, before the eighth death was announced, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said he hoped survivors might still be found.

He also praised the "exemplary job" of the 100 rescue personnel contending with below freezing temperatures and strong winds that whipped up smouldering pockets of fire in the wreckage.

09:39   Modi to address 'Vijay Shankalp Samavesh' rally in Odisha today
Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi will address 'Vijay Shankalp Samavesh' rally in Odisha's Sambalpur district on Friday.

The Odisha police have made elaborate security arrangements for the Gujarat Chief Minister's rally scheduled to be held at PHD ground in Sambalpur.

08:30   US ends contract ban on BP
The United States has announced an end to its ban on BP obtaining government contracts following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, the worst oil spill in US history.

The Environmental Protection Agency said in a tweeted statement that BP "agreed to safety and ethics improvements" in exchange for removing the ban, which had hurt the British company's ability to do business in the United States.

BP said the five-year deal with the EPA will allow it to pursue new oil exploration leases in deepwater tracts in the Gulf of Mexico, which still bears many traces of the massive spill.

"After a lengthy negotiation, BP is pleased to have reached this resolution, which we believe to be fair and reasonable," John Minge, chairman and president of BP America, said in a statement.

"Today's agreement will allow America's largest energy investor to compete again for federal contracts and leases."

The agreement requires BP to add and expand efforts in corporate ethics and compliance, enforce a detailed code of conduct, and meet EPA audit requirements.
