US deports Saddam Hussein's stepson

Saddam Hussein's stepson, who had been detained by US immigration authorities for entering the country without proper documents, has been deported to New Zealand, of which he is a citizen.

Mohammed Saffi (36) had landed at Los Angeles airport in California last Tuesday and travelled to Miami to attend a three-day course at Aeroservice Aviation Centre, a flight training school near the Miami international airport.

He was later picked up for entering the country as a tourist while he needed a student visa to attend the course.

The FBI suspects that some hijackers involved in the September 11 terrorist attacks had been students at the same institute.

Last week, a spokesman for New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark had said that her government had 'no evidence that Saffi is connected to terrorist activities or to terrorist organisations'.

No criminal charges have been filed against Saffi, US authorities have said.
