Muhammad Saffi, a stepson of Saddam, was arrested from his hotel on Wednesday, media reports said quoting an immigration official.
Saffi, a flight engineer with Air New Zealand, had landed at Los Angeles airport in California on Tuesday and travelled to Miami to attend a three-day seminar in a school near the international airport.
Saffi was detained at an immigration centre, a television station reported quoting an immigration official adding that authorities found the circumstances 'very disturbing'.
His mother, a former flight attendant, was a mistress of Saddam Hussein in the late 80s and they later married.
Saffi, 36, is settled in Auckland.
It was not clear whether the seminar was organised by one of the pilot training schools where the hijackers involved in the September 11 terrorist attacks were trained.
