The Jammu and Kashmir police on Thursday arrested a senior officer of the paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) allegedly involved in the killing of the 16-year old youth in the Nishat locality of the summer capital Srinagar last month.

A senior police officer said the BSF authorities handed over R K Birdi, commanding officer of the 68 battalion BSF to police who later arrested him and is now being questioned in the Kothibagh police station.

Thursday's arrest of the CO follows the earlier arrest of a BSF jawan, Lakhwinder Kumar by the state police in the killing of Zahid Farooq Sheikh on February 5 in the Nishat area of the summer capital Srinagar.

During questioning, the arrested trooper had confessed shooting at the youth, but maintained that he only followed the orders of his CO who had ordered him to shoot at the youth.

Zahid who received a fatal chest wound had succumbed to his injury while being shifted to the hospital.

"We have arrested the commanding officer in the case and he is being questioned to take forward the investigation," the officer said.

Police has already seized the service weapon used in the shooting incident and the three vehicles those were part of the convoy led by Birdi on the fateful afternoon of February 5.
