The Alliance for 33%, a group of more than 300 women's groups, including political leaders and artists, have announced a rally in New Delhi on Thursday, demanding an immediate passage of the Women's Reservation Bill.
The Alliance has invited all political parties in Parliament to come together to lend their support to the cause of women's right and equality in India.
"The UPA lacks political will and social commitment necessary for getting the bill passed. The parties opposing the bill are preventing women from coming into mainstream politics," said Annie Raja, national general secretary of National Federation of Indian Women( a women's wing of Communist Party of India), in a statement.
The march between Jantar-Mantar and Parliament will be addressed by political leaders-Alka Lamba, Brinda Karat, Jayanti Natarajan and Kanimozhi and artists like Javed Akhtar, Sharmila Tagore and Mallika Sarabhai.
According to Beulah Shekhar of YWCA, "It is now or never! To achieve the Millennium Development Goal No.3 which aims at promoting gender equality and empowering women, India has to pass the bill now."
