The cooperation of the Indian government, Indian Air Force and the state government with US defence teams searching for remains of US fighter plane pilots missing-in-action during World War II in Arunchal Pradesh was appreciated on Thursday by US Consul General Beth A Payne.

The searches under the Joint POW/missing-in-action Accounting Command are being conducted in different parts of Arunachal Pradesh as a humanitarian mission to retrieve remains of pilots of US fighter aircraft missing during World War II which carried supplies to the allied forces.

"No remains have so far been found, but we will continue the search as we are committed to inform families still waiting to know about the fate of their relatives and US military cannot leave their men behind no matter that they have been missing for over 60 years," Payne told mediapersons.

She said similar searches were being made in several other countries, including Vietnam, and the government there was cooperating as it was a humanitarian mission. She also said that US considered the project of restoring ancient manuscripts in Tawang monastery as a wonderful one, but was not funding it.

"We say it is a wonderful project. We are not considering funding it under our cultural programme for the present. But who knows what will happen tomorrow," she said.
