Investigators on Monday told a court in New Delhi that Kobad Ghandy, a Politbureau member of banned Communist Party of India-Maoist, was going around allegedly with nine fake names and found setting up a base for Naxal activities in the national capital.

"Ghandy was preaching Naxalism, Marxism and Leninism. He was central committee member of Politbureau of CPI-ML, besides looking after Committee of Mass Organisation and international department of Central Publishing Bureau and being in charge of its South Western Regional Bureau," the Delhi Police told Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja.

They alleged that the accused, who has been arrested under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for being a member of the banned terror organisation, was residing at a rented accommodation in south Delhi and working to set up the base of the Naxalites.

The police claimed to have recovered materials, including CDs and laptop from Ghandy who allegedly carried nine fake names like Dilip Patel, Narsi, Arvind, Rajan, Katif Ansari and others to substantiate its charges that he was actively working for the Naxals.

Ghandy was remanded to police custody till October eight.

The police sought a five-day custody of Ghandy saying he was to be interrogated in respect of the material and CDs seized allegedly from him and was to be taken to Mumbai to apprehend other members of the banned outfit.

They submitted that he was also required to unravel the whole "conspiracy" behind the naxal activities in Delhi.

"Considering the submissions made in light of the facts of the case and material on records, I am of the opinion that the custodial interrogation of the accused is essential. Therefore, he is remanded to police custody till October 8," the court said.

Earlier, the court posted the matter after lunch when Ghandy, who was produced a day before expiry of his 14 days in judicial custody on a production warrant, complained to it that his lawyer has not been informed of the move by the police to take him on remand.

The special cell of the Delhi Police arrested Ghandy on September 21. He has claimed to be suffering from prostate cancer and cardiac problems and has been referred to G B Pant and LNJP Hospitals in New Delhi by the court.

An alumni of the prestigious Doon School, Ghandy was in the top echelons of erstwhile CPI-ML (People's War group) from 1981 and then became a Central Committee member of the CPI (Maoist). He was elected to CPI (Maoist) Politbureau in 2007.
