A 24-year-old man was seriously injured on Sunday after an automatic weapon of a paramilitary trooper got accidentally fired in the border village of Trehgam in north Kashmir Kupwara district.

The CRPF trooper was detained after the incident, according to a senior police officer.

The incident triggered an impromptu strike and protests in the village, as the wounded man, Riyaz Ahmad, was taken to a local hospital in Srinagar for treatment.

Police sources said the automatic rifle of the central reserve police force trooper went off accidentally, letting out a volley of fire with a bullet hitting Ahmad, a vegetable vendor on the chest.

Ahmad was brought to Srinagar in a serious condition and was admitted in SMHS hospital.

The police and security force officers soon reached the spot to control the situation.
