Election commissioners lock horns over Sena
A smouldering controversy threatens the Election Commission's work, with Chief Election Commissioner Dr M S Gill and Election Commissioner G V G Krishnamurty locked in a war of words.
Krishnamurty is peeved with Dr Gill's remarks on the former's media conference, announcing that an ultimatum has been served on the Shiv Sena.
Apparently taking Krishnamurty to task for making such a media statement without taking the other two election commissioners -- J M Lyngdoh being the third -- into confidence, Dr Gill said the Election Commission, too, ''needs a model code of conduct'' to avoid such incidents in future.
Dr Gill felt the Sena issue was a ''quasi-judicial'' matter which should not have been disclosed to the media.
Taking exception to the remarks, Krishnamurty abruptly cancelled his two-day trip to Orissa, beginning on Sunday, where he was to oversee election work.
Hardening his stance today, Krishnamurty stayed away from office.
Official sources, however, said he was on a day's leave.
Dr Gill, who made the remarks in Bhopal, is expected in the capital tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Election Commission sources told UNI that the decision to summon Sena chief Bal Thackeray on December 24 was an administrative decision. It was not a quasi-judicial matter as the political party was not present when the decision was taken.
Sources said Krishnamurthy may extend his leave if the CEC
does not repose faith in him.
