Sun sets up Competency Centre for Java in India

Sun Microsystems, the $8 billion US network company, has roped in CMC Limited, a government of India enterprise, to set up the first competency centre for development of Sun's Java technologies in association with the Department of Electronics and the National Association of Software and Service Companies.

To be located at CMC's research and development wing in Hyderabad, the competency centre will provide logistic support for developing Java applications and products with an initial cost of Rs 43.6 million.

While Sun will provide the requisite hardware and software components, CMC will deploy its skilled manpower to carry out innovations in Java.

According to DoE Secretary Shyamal Ghosh the Competency Centre for Java in India will serve as a consultant, architect and developer of Java products solutions for the domestic and global companies through Sun Microsystems.

The centre was set up as part of the proposed National Information Infrastructure backbone to introduce information technology in every aspect of the economy, including governance, socio-economic development, upgradation and expansion of overall infrastructure facilities across the country and finally electronic commerce to link India globally.

The global Internet market in the next decade is estimated to be in the order of $200 billion.
