Siemens builds call tracer software for Delhi police

Siemens Information Systems Limited has indigenously developed a caller identification software for the Delhi police for tracing hoax callers.

The first system has been activated for the Delhi police to help track calls on emergency number 100.

With the system, the phone number of the caller will flash on the screen of the police operator handling the particular call.

In the event of the call being a hoax the calling number can be identified for records. The system works only on electronic exchanges but nearly 87 per cent of the Delhi metropolitan area comes under electronic exchanges.

The Computer Telephony Integration Products Group at SISL developed 'Call Centre'.

The Delhi police emergency service is a high-volume inbound call centre application and receives over 4,000 calls a day. When a crime is reported on number 100, the objective is to dispatch a police team to the crime location as soon as possible. The private networking division of Siemens Limited provided a state-of-the-art EPABX, the critical hardware for the system.

The 'Call Centre' has been operational for nearly a year at Delhi police headquarters at ITO and has been found to be working satisfactorily, said the managing director of SISL, Anil Laud.

The police departments of other metros have also evinced an interest in the system he said, adding that it can be put to different uses in places, which handle a high volume of calls daily. The company also plans to market it in other South Asian countries.

The project has been executed in collaboration with Telecommunications Consultants India Limited. SISL is a 76:24 joint venture between Siemens Limited and Siemens Nixdorf.

Siemens Limited is the Indian subsidiary of the German multinational powerhouse Siemens AG. Siemens Nixdorf is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Siemens AG. The company has notched up a turnover of around Rs 1.2 billion in 1996-97. It is targeting 50 per cent sales of its software in the domestic market in the current financial year.
