C-DAC bags supercomputer orders

Pune's Centre for Development of Advanced Computing has bagged yet more orders to deliver supercomputers.

The first Param 10000, a high-performance giga FLOPS range supercomputer, will be sold to a Singapore university early next year.

C-DAC Executive Director Dr Vijay P Bhatkar said here today that this would be the fastest supercomputer in Asia apart form a Japanese machine.

The new series of supercomputers with open frame architecture can perform 100 giga flops and could be upgraded to tera FLOPS range.

After the mission of Param 10000 completes on March 31, 1998, he said three orders are in the pipeline, one each from the National Informatics Centre in Pune, the Institute for Computer Aided Design of Russia and the Singapore University.

The Singapore order is expected anytime now and the other two would be executed consequently. The NIC intends to use the high-performance machine in application technology and advanced network for the proposed National Information Infrastructure.

For the development of the Param 10000, governmental grant of Rs 400 million and an additional Rs 80 million mopped up through the C-DAC business was used, he informed.

The designing of the tera FLOPS machine meant 10 times the existing expenditure Dr Bhatkar said and added that this machine could be scaled to tera FLOPS speed.

Param 8000, 8600 and 9000, in various ranges of computing speeds, were developed during the last decade and the Param 10000 is the latest in the range.

Besides, C-DAC has also developed a language technology known as 'graphics and intelligence based script technology' called GIST to eliminate language barrier in computer usage.
