Compaq eyes India's growing enterprise market

Though Compaq Computer India will retain its mainline focus on the PC and server segments, it now proposes to take on the three traditional giants, IBM, Hewlett Packard and Digital, in the rapidly expanding enterprise market in India.

The domestic enterprise segment accounts for 25 per cent of the entire Indian hardware market.

Compaq Computer India Limited Managing Director Abhishek Mukherjee said "We are confident of making deep inroads in the cut-throat enterprise arena as we expect our premium Proliant range of Intel Pentium servers to be the logical choice of Indian customers who have had to make do with the RISC based propriety servers for all these years."

Mukherjee said Compaq would shortly flood the Indian market by kicking off volume shipments of its Intel based Proliant servers, which will have multiprocessing architecture.

Elaborating the Proliant range's strengths, Mukherjee said "Unlike the proprietary servers manufactured by IBM, HP and Digital, the Proliant line will offer the flexibility of an open system, running applications on Windows NT and SCO UNIX.

"Importantly, unlike the earlier Intel range, the Intel line of Proliant 6000, 6500 and 7000 servers are capable of handling enterprise class applications encompassing low, medium and enterprise level operations."

According to Mukherjee "Compaq's recent acquisition of Tandem will also substantially diversify its product line which will now include Tandem's famed Himalaya fault tolerant mainframes which power the world's top bourses."
