Dip in Asian sales hits Oracle Q2

Oracle Corporation reported lower fiscal second quarter earnings as sales in Asia and the US telecommunications market fell below expectations and rising costs trimmed profit margins. The company said net income for the period ended November 30 was $187 million or 19 cents a share, up 4.5 per cent from $179 million or 18 cents a year earlier. The results were less than the expected 23 cents a share, the average estimate of 25 analysts polled by IBES International Inc. The company has been trying to diversify its revenue sources relying more on services and applications software as the market for database software slows.

Netscape bullish on Asia opportunity

The US based Netscape Communications Corp expected its revenue from Asia to double in 1998 despite the region's economic troubles, a company official has said. "Across the region, we will double sales," Ramesh Nava, managing director of Netscape Asia South has said. Netscape's Asia South region covers the regional grouping of ASEAN, Indochina and India. Nava said the region made negligible contribution to the group in 1996 as it was new to the market. "1997 is our first real year of operations," he said, but declined to reveal revenue figures.
