Code Wars: India will see action in the world's biggest programming contest.

For the first time, India will be a venue for the world's biggest software contest.

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur is going to host one of the six Asia region venues for the 24th ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest.

Email this story to a friend. The annual contest is held by the Association of Computing Machinery, the world's fist society in computing and is being sponsored this year by IBM, the world's largest provider of software.

The regional contests at Kanpur will be held on December 6 and 7.

The winning team from each region will be eligible to participate in the five-day world finals at Orlando, USA. The finals are scheduled from March 15 next year.

The contest is in Pascal, C, C++ and Java.

Besides, Kanpur, the sites in the Asia region are Taipei, Shanghai, Kyoto, Teheran and Dhaka.

Winners from 60 such sites across the world are entitled to take part in the finals. Additionally, high-ranking teams would be invited to the world finals as wild card teams.

Overseeing arrangement at Kanpur are Dr Sanjay G Dhande and Dr Phalguni Gupta. Dr Dhande is director of IIT Kanpur's Research and Development Department. Dr Gupta is the contest director.

They claim that institutions from neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia and Thailand are confirming participation in the mega event.

About 100 teams will participate in the preliminary phase.

It would be possible for software enthusiasts to witness the five-hour programming contest.

The entire show would also be fed to the contest Web site and networked with a special contest judging software to be provided by the contest's Asia region director.

The actual regional contest would be held on December 7. But practice sessions would be allowed on the previous day.

The ACM is a non-profit organisation founded in 1947. It is the largest international scientific and educational organisation with 80,000 members, advancing the skills of information technology professionals and students throughout the world.
