Tata Teleservices crosses 1,000-user mark

The private company also announced that its customer base has crossed the 1,000-user mark after it commenced services in March this year.

To mark the occasion, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and the Tata Group Chairman Ratan N Tata made an inaugural videoconference call to MTNL Chairman and Managing Director S Rajagopalan.

Tata Teleservices CEO S Ramakrishana said that Tata Teleservices represents the single largest greenfield investment made by the Tata Group and the single largest private investment in Andhra Pradesh.

"We have a vision that by 2005 we will be leaders in India in delivering world class communications and infotainment services.

"We are bringing to the world of telecommunications a friendly face of quality services. Our efficiency and friendly operator services have started with the 197 directory assistance services and 198, the nearly 24-hour helpdesk for our customers. Our geographical information system (GIS) has the entire city of Hyderabad digitised and available to our customers service representatives on their fingertips. A highly planned control centre will be able to tell our customers exactly when and where the line will be installed and repaired,'' Ramakrishna claimed.

Tata, speaking on the occasion, said the investments made by them "Reflect our commitment to developing the telecommunications infrastructure in the state. Telecommunications plays a critical part in the growth of the economy of any state by providing vital infrastructure.''

Tata Teleservices is using a combination of modern optical fibre cable and wireless in local loop technologies to provide access to the customers. The company has drawn up a rollout plan by offering services in Vijayawada by June end and Visakhapatnam by the year-end. It plans to offer a wide range of telecommunications services, which include leased lines, ISDN, voice mail, Centrax and Data Services over some time.

Tata Teleservices has planned for an investment of about $2 billion during the licence period of 15 years. It envisages a 9,000-man operation. The projected turnover of the company is Rs 70 billion.

Later, answering questions, Tata ruled out any possibility of involving Tatas in developing the proposed international airport project near Hyderabad.
