Madras Telephones deploys IN services

Email this story to a friend. Intelligent Network Services, a new telephone service to benefit customers and those without STD and ISD connections at their homes, was today launched in Madras, which joined Bombay, Delhi and other major cities in the country to have such a service.

Madras Telephones Chief General Manager C V Rajan launched the service by opening the 'virtual card calling' facility, which can be used to make local, STD and ISD calls from any telephone other than coin-box ones.

The holder of the card, available to the value of Rs 200 and Rs 500, could make STD and ISD calls even from telephones without the facilities, he said.

The call charges - Rs 1.20 per unit would be debited from the VCC value and holding such a card is equivalent to holding cash, he added.

Stating that the facility introduced in New Delhi and Bombay sometime ago was received well, he said the facility in Madras would be a boon to corporate houses, business organisations, service groups and professionals who could also avail the free phone service to be introduced next fortnight.

Rajan said the free phone facility, under which the subscriber would be charged instead of the caller, was under trial and would be introduced in 10 to 15 days.

He said intelligent network is also capable of providing services like premium rate service, virtual private network, universal access number service and televoting and these would be introduced in a phased manner.

On developmental schemes initiated in Madras, he said around 300,000 equipped capacity would be added during the year and 150,000 new connections would be provided.

Madras Telephones is proposing to wipe out the existing waiting list for lines, he promised.

A capital expenditure of Rs 2.5 billion was made last year and Madras Telephones proposes to spend Rs 3.5 billion during this year.

It had earned revenue of Rs 9.5 billion last year, he added.
