Microsoft opens shop in Pakistan

Email this story to a friend. Microsoft will open an office in Pakistan, a company executive has announced in Islamabad.

''Pakistan is a market with huge technology potential and Microsoft is ready to help in realising that potential,'' Bahram Mohazzebi told reporters after a meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif yesterday.

Mohazzebi, who is general manager, Microsoft GEM (Gulf and eastern Mediterranean), said effects of Microsoft investment and operations in Pakistan ''will be felt immediately with new pricing, software licensing and educational initiatives''.

However his main concern appeared to be what he called the ''endemic rate of software piracy in Pakistan''.

''We will be working actively with government officials to share with them a view of the economical advantages that can be achieved by addressing the illegal software problem,'' Mohazzebi said, stressing that a professional local software and hardware market cannot thrive when illegal copies flood the market.
