TCS plans re-purposing of Y2K factory

"We will find out ways to reuse the assets of the factory consisting of computer systems, networking systems and other equipment for non-Y2K work. We have a clear agenda for how to take care of its utility once its assigned task is over,'' says TCS CEO S Ramadorai.

Ramadorai has said that his company has thought about multiple ways of tackling the human resources used for the project. It would be working out suitable plans to absorb or utilise the people associated with the project. Most of them are from business partners.

Ramadorai says TCS' exposure to Y2K is not very large, comprising only 15 per cent of its total revenue. It has dropped now to only 10 per cent.

He said companies now dependent on projects like Y2K and euro conversion would have to start preparing themselves to meet the domestic market. Though it is small, its potential is huge and a sound strategy needs to be adopted by both the government and corporation to give it an impetus.

Though some efforts are evident from smaller companies and small groups of software engineers, there is still larger scope for the country to emerge as a major product centric software industry if a good communication policy and infrastructure upgradation is in place.
